Swedish police have freed a 14-year-old girl who was allegedly trafficked to Sweden from Belgrade and held as a sex-slave for a year by a mentally-deranged man, media reports said Wednesday.

Police refused to comment on the reports, except to confirm that there is a case under investigation.

The Daily Expressen described the girl's captor as a 25-year-old mentally handicapped man.

His family believed he would get better if he had a wife, so they bought the girl for him from her father in the Serbian capital, paying €1,000 ($1,360), the paper said.

Her ordeal began in September 2010.

"The girl was forced to get engaged in line with Roma customs with the 25-year-old, and was taken to the family's apartment ... where she was locked up," Expressen reported.

The girl, whose name was not disclosed, has told police she was subjected daily to threats, physical abuse and rape during her captivity in Sweden's second city Gothenburg, the paper said.

A Gothenburg court has detained four people in the case on suspicion of human trafficking, including the girl's captor and her father, Swedish news agency TT said.

Her captor and a 40-year-old woman are also suspected of rape.

Expressen said the girl became pregnant and suffered a miscarriage at one point during her ordeal.

"She is very, very happy to be free of this hell. In videotaped police interrogations she has talked extensively about what she has gone through," an unidentified source told Expressen.

It was not immediately known how the case came to the police's attention.

Expressen said police freed the girl in late October or early November in a raid on the apartment.

According to TT, the case is being handled by prosecutors in the international prosecution unit.

One can only hope justice will be meted out and the poor girl can get the help she needs.

It,s always amazing what benefits multi culturism bring to Sweden. The opportunity to see new cultures close up, and learn from them. On this occasion for example, we can learn about the Roma,s traditional methods of mental health and child care. Who would have known the going rate for a 13 year old girl in Serbia is €1 000? Or that mental illness can be cured by marrying, enslaving and raping children? I really would like to know more about this interesting and ancient community that have adapted so well to life in Sweden.

I'm not seeing anything that states this was done by an immigrant. There have been several such stories in recent years of native-born Swedes holding women hostage in remote cabins for years - although this one is the first I remember seeing that occurred in a big city.

@ Hubris

Well then you are doing some selective reading. The majority of the cases are immigrants. There was another case two years ago where another 14 year old girl was abused. Everyone involved were immigrants and that was also in a big city.

The Roma are not known for interacting with others outside their community.Unfortunately they have child brides as young as 12 year olds. This doesn't negate the condemnation of such a barbaric custom but hopefully she some light on the horrible practice.

@Migga, Swedes or not it's a horrible crime. Sweden has enough of its own in house ethnic Swedish child predators that also choose to prey on poor children in Thailand and other places. What's really disturbing is that some of the Swedish predators are as young as 18 years old ...an age that they should remember what it feels like to be preyed upon themselves.

If this was done by immigrant, police would say nationality of rapist family, but if they don't want to give info, it means it is done by Swedes. And selling of child is connected with poverty and not with ethnicity. Roma people live like homeless in Serbia and elsewhere, give them jobs if you care so much for their children. I am sure, nobody will give them job but everybody will put finger on them and blame them for something.

I hope I am not too bold and break any unwritten laws of cultural relativisim, but I find it wrong to make 14 year old girls into sex slaves.

Re #6," If this was done by immigrant, police would say nationality of rapist family, but if they don't want to give info, it means it is done by Swedes."

I believe the police or court records do name the nationality of the accused, and in this case, other sources state that the accused have a nationality other than Swedish and have requested translaters as well.

There is currently a controvery within Sweden regarding the media because some people feel that the Swedish media names and pictures "ethnic" Nordic peoples accused of crimes but will absolutely not present names and pictures when the accused are non-Swedish, something which is seen as a double standard. Seems unusual that the term Roma was even used in this article.

A question now is what will happen to this poor kid. Will she be sent back to Serbia and to whom? Will she be allowed to stay in Sweden? I hope she has some super people on her side now to help her.

You should think twice before make that affirmation, look inside your community, not to say your family and you will find many incorrect behaviors that bring nothing good to the society you live in.

What they have done to the girl is horrendous, and they should be judge by that, but you cannot misunderstand by connecting that with something only possibly on other cultures.
