Men sue Swedish police for sexual discrimination

The National Police Board (Rikspolistyrelsen) has been sued by a rights group for alleged discrimination, arguing that women have been favoured ahead of men in the recruitment process.

The Centre for Justice (Centrum för rättvisa) has filed three writs against the board, alleging that male recruits have been denied places at the Swedish National Police Academy in favour of female recruits, despite the man having performed better in physical and language tests.

"If there has been violation of the law on admissions to the Police Academy, it is obviously very serious. Through this judicial process the questions will hopefully be answered," said Clarence Crafoord, director of the Centre for Justice, in statement.

Crafoord argued that the issue is of extra importance "because the Equality Ombudsman has chosen to act extremely passively in the matter".

The Local reported in July that around 80 complaints had been filed with the Equality Ombudsman (Diskrimineringsombudsmannen - DO) alleging they weren't admitted to police training programmes because of their gender.

The Centre for Justice has now reported that this figure has risen to 130 cases of alleged discrimination.

DO announced a couple of weeks ago that it would open a dialogue with the police board, responsible for the academies in Solna, Umeå and Växjö.

The three cases set be tried concern two men from Malmö in western Sweden and one from Småland in south central Sweden.

"These men who applied for police training have been better than the women in both the language tests and physical tests, but despite this it is the women who have been admitted," Clarence Crafoord said.

The men are each demanding 100,000 kronor ($15,000) in compensation.

Carolina Ekéus at the National Police Board press office told The Local on Monday that the board declined to comment on the case "as a judicial process has now begun".

Ekéus furthermore declined to comment on the National Police Board's recruitment policies.

Back in January 2009 the National Police Academy announced that, for the first time ever, women outnumbered the men among the new recruits in that year's intake.

"We need people with different backgrounds and experience so that the police force is representative of the wider society," said Monica Landergård at the police academy to The Local at the time.

To be represantive of the wider society means to have balance staff by its privat parts ?

So if sitting peeing staff is not balanced with staying peeing staff it means the staff is not represantive of society ??

In police ???

Well I do remeber the appaling result of this. Prisoner (man) killled guardian (woman) during his transport by his hands. The woman guardina is pure victim of experiment to have representative of wider society among prison guardians.

Come on...you jealous bastards, stop it. Recruiting hot blond Swedish girls means we can cash to get more tourists...visit Sweden...commit a crime and get arrested by a hot blond female cop...how is slogan?

We went through this in the States 30 years ago when we had "affirmative action." The idea is to correct an imbalance and then move forward with better equality. I think each skill set, not just those mentioned, need to be evaluated and balanced as do the individuals being hired to fill the slots.

The female police officer pictured can frisk me anytime she wants to...

When I read the title I assumed it was men who had gotten tickets suing the police as they often let pretty girls with a cute smile get away with much more. That is actually real discrimination.

The Swedish police should be working on their image problem rather then getting tied up in these kind of matters.

Thats what happens when you have quota based on gender rather than merit...

One-way "equality". I believe Animal Farm had a quip about that one.

Not only in police recruitment. even in professional life many managers hired a women just seeing there heiny not the competence
19:11 November 14, 2011 by Lavaux
Stop and frisk is looking much less an imposition now ...

Seriously, I don't want the police force to be representative of society in all ways, e.g. drunks, miscreants, malcontents, sadists, etc. Cops should be smart, courageous, honest and conscientious. Sex and race have nothing to do with what cops should be, which goes to show you how stupid this diversity nonsense really is.
19:33 November 14, 2011 by Grokh
this is why affirmative action of any kind is stupid, either you are the right person for the job or gtfo. doesnt matter if you are male or female only if you are qualified or not.

equal rights for everyone despite color, sex, religion .

when people start making special exceptions this happens,

I actually felt sad once I saw a female cop left handicapped for life because she and her weapon couldn't be a match for kicks from a shoplifter.

hmm... way to go guys... sue the police for discrimination... just in case you didn't already know... Sweden is a country that celebrates mediocrity... so it comes to me as no surprise if incompetent people are recruited into the force just because they so happen to be female.
21:04 November 14, 2011 by dizzymoe33
It should be based on who can perform the job the best not based on gender alone.

Where does the female officer in the photo keep her bludgeon?
04:47 November 15, 2011 by J Jack
Swedish female police officers should not be allowed to wear make-up. Everything else in Sweden is forbidden! Why the special treatment? Discrimination is an understatement.

Those 3 white Swedish men now know what it feels like to be a non-white foreigner in Sweden.
14:49 November 23, 2011 by xguild
@Icarusty

And a women!

Its the correction of discrimination through the process of discrimination. Wore yet however is the fact that we are organizing an important part of our society (the police force) by genetalia instead of by actual qualification for the work.

Fortuantly things like this will work themselves out in due time, its only going to take a few more dead female cops before the outrage spins on its heals.

This is stupidity for stupidies sake, men and women are no equals, lets all say it together. Some things are true no matter how much you scream to the contrary.
18:24 November 23, 2011 by Bolinb
@xguild

men and women are no equals

No they are not. But the police force should not be run on brute force, Rather by intelligent people who want to assist in the protection of others and the rights of all to have THE SAME CHANCES IN LIFE..... Men are stronger and women have more mental endurance. So what.

Yes a woman can not swing a baton as hard as a man and maybe not run as fast as some men. But she can think as well and work as hard and as long as a man. But back to the story

It is a shame that these men feel that way and if it is truely what happened then it should be corrected, but something must also be said about the menthods used for them to believe that this is happening means that someone is telling them (Where do they get the information that says they did better than an other)??? Personal opinion a court case does not make. And if they got this information how was it allowed to leak. Freedom of information does not allow for a persons details to be released? Or does it in Sweden?
00:43 December 5, 2011 by Da Goat
yes the police pictured in the centre can swing my baton anytime. however have a closer look, the picture does show more female than male police ! (at least the picture matches the story well done TL
