Asylum seekers protest living conditions

Some thirty asylum seekers stormed out of housing assigned for them in Askersund in central Sweden on Tuesday in protest at "unsanitary conditions" while a further facility in Eskilstuna is set to close after a wave of violence.

The group of about 30 asylum seekers left the newly opened accommodation outside Askersund, jumping a train to return to their former residence in Gävle.

But without tickets they were forced to alight in Lindesberg and were then driven by coach back to Askersund.

The asylum-seekers proceeded to refuse for several hours to get off the bus until police were able to persuade them to accede.

Elsewhere the condition is described to be serious for the man who was stabbed at an asylum seeker facility in Eskilstuna on Monday evening.

Both the police and residents have testified about a wave of fights at the facility and the Migration Board (Migrationsverket) has decided to close it, but currently has no alternative accommodation.

"We are in agreement with the municipality to close down the facility by the end of January. But today we do not have any other space. We have people living in the corridors and lying on mattresses in the reception accommodation," said Ulrik Åshuvud at the reception centre in nearby Västerås, underlining that Eskilstuna is a better alternative at the moment.

A man in his 20s, who lives at the Eskilstuna centre, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after the attack.

It's too dirty for their royal majesties? THEN THEY CAN CLEAN IT UP THEMSELVES!!!!!

Honestly....

And what are the odds that the attempted murderer will ever be anything but a drag on any society unfortunate enough to have him in it?

Unbelievable. People expect Sweden to accept them with open arms, then they complain that conditions aren't good enough for them. Sweden owes these individuals nothing. If things are so unsanitary, then they shouldn't be sitting on a bus whining, they should get off their duffs and help clean it up. I doubt they were offered free maid service when they entered the country. If you want to be accepted, then do your part in your new land. You aren't any better than the Swedes and you need to earn your keep too. If you don't like that option, the door works both ways!

When racists make comments, I must do too. Sweden get money from UN for taking refugees and has obligation to give them normal accommodation. They send 8 refugees in 4 rooms house, while Swedish live 3-4 people in so big house, they mix refugees from war together (for example Serbs and Albanians from Kosovo) even it is forbidden by international rules, so, I am not surprised there are fights and killing, that's what want racist immigration office. If this racist office respect rules, there would be no fights and killings.

@David and @thinkabouti... I understood you do not have any hint why your country accept refugee .. read about Geneva convention ..Do not write such a stupied comment please if you do not have any idea about the topic ... Ur country is much more benefical more than the country of orgin if these people come here ... leman pepople like u think negatively and argue blindley while ur goverment wisely realized the benifit ...

Before attacking asylum seekers it is important to describe how unsanitary the accommodation was. Theymay be whinging or they may not, it hangs on the actual conditions.

Typically the local omits highly relevant parts of an item.
09:33 November 23, 2011 by Kaethar
I was just about to say... what living conditions are being protested here exactly?

@asteriks: Real refugees are fleeing from war and conflict. If people sharing accomodation want to kill people of certain nationalities that implies said people are frauds and probably a part of criminal organisations. I don't care too much if such people kill each other off.

If they want to live in Sweden they need to be accepting of people of different ethnic backgrounds. Learning this in practice right off the boat is the best way. In fact, Migrationsverket should take special effort in spreading out refugees of various backgrounds in different centers to make sure people get to interact and make friends with people of other ethnicities than their own.

If they have paid ten thousand dollars each for an all-inclusive extended holiday in Sweden and been promised they don't have to work or anything, of course they will be disappointed if the house maids work are not up to standard. And like Asteriks 09:08 is saying - UN is paying Sweden to take care of these refugees (I winder where UN gets it money from) and it is the racist swedes fault that refugees kill each other. And we must accept the refugees from a certain religion are persecuted and therefore see no other alternative than to kill people from other religions. That's natural. Swedes must be more open

minded and accept our new aristocracy with open arms.

"Unbelievable. People expect Sweden to accept them with open arms, then they complain that conditions aren't good enough for them. Sweden owes these individuals nothing."

I agree, this is off the charts. I these asylum seekers didn't like their accommodations provided for them, maybe they should just go back to their country of origin. How would that be then?
14:17 November 23, 2011 by tigger007
i have been living in sweden for 10yrs and some of the people who come here as asylum seekers or refugees. they think that sweden and the world owe them something and i don't understand this way of thinking. NOTHING is owed to anyone!

you are NOT promised or owed a new day in life, just make the best that you have. they are owed basic human rights YES but nothing else! if i was living in those places i would get off my butt and clean it myself as i do in my own home.

they choose to come here so they have to make due what is giving to them and try make a dollar out of 15 cents. it's strange most people that come to america that don't ask for nothing, they get off their butts and hustle hard. i think sweden needs to get a stiff upper lip!

@engagebrain

The article CLEARLY states it was a BRAND NEW facility, if it was unsanitary it was due to the people living there!!!

we don't know what, if any, problems exist. Maybe the toilet flood the rooms below and the taps don't work.

But given that we don't know, it is premature to abuse the asylum seekers.

@ asteriks

Sweden get money from the UN to recive a set number of refugees, beyond that it`s on Sweden. They fill a quota, as the Geneve convention says. But if you look at the numbers, Sweden is one of the countries that, per capita, takes on the most refugees. Sweden goes beyond their responsibility. Sweden recive these people out of good will, not because they are getting payed.

It`s also laughable that you blame Migrationsverket for the actions of the criminal and murderous refugee. You should open your eyes and face the fact that all refugees aren`t refugees or all that nice either.
16:42 November 23, 2011 by RobinHood
Apart from their own sloth, what prevents these people from picking up a mop and bucket of hot soapy water and cleaning their own environment. If their assylum applications are accepted, is this how they are going to behave in their new country? What useful members of society they will be.
16:52 November 23, 2011 by gabeltoon
I agree with the third comment. IF the accommodations are unsanitary then clean it yourself. You were given it as habitable therefore you are responsible for it's cleanliness.
18:03 November 23, 2011 by calebian22
The Geneva convention clarified the definition of what it means to be a refugee but it doesn't steer quotas or membership. The UNHCR quotas are voluntary and non-binding. Sweden can say no to more refugees tomorrow.
19:13 November 23, 2011 by Svensksmith
Perhaps the refugee program should be set up like foster care. Those willing to accept refugees into their homes could sign up with the refugee agency and sponsor the refugees in their homes. They could help the refugees get on their feet and recieve a small compensation from the state for their expenses.

Wouldn't it be better for countries to take in immigrants from the continents they come from?

We have enough problems integrating Europeans regardless what part of Europe they come from...

Countries like the UK could stop all those benefits and housing if they really wanted to - they don't.

The neverending flow into Europe is just not sustainable - tolerance and acceptance has its limits as we have to realistic about the future impact on all of us in the future.

send all of them back to the UK, France, USA and Israel, the countries that stirring up these problems worldwide. their greed for control of the world strategic energy resources and MONEY MONEY MONEY has to be paid off properly!

@ tigger007 "NOTHING is owed to anyone!"

I believe thats the way for the western europe and northern america to see things and exploit other nations for centuries now. we do not need to have a some sort of external non-earthly enemy (alien or something) so we could unite, be more cosmopolitan. i feel sad for such a aggressive way of thinking and non tolerance that you showed by your comment. you are no better than a islamist kamikaze showing non tolerance to unfamiliar objects (ideas) by blowing himself up

Well there's always the option to GO HOME!!!

...if you don't enjoy the free accomodations, health care and food we're paying for.

"The asylum-seekers proceeded to refuse for several hours to get off the bus until police were able to persuade them to accede."

They should have driven the bus out of Sweden, never coming back.
22:51 November 25, 2011 by sureiam
Well well, my question is..... are these people real "refugees" or so called asylum seekers. For my knowledge if they are or were would then obviously suck it up here(Sweden) as calm +peaceful... men!
23:57 November 25, 2011 by biddi
Just hope to God these Middle Eastern countries can sort themselves out so they stay put and don't invade Europe any further. They come with 'nothing' and then complain about everything. It's frightening to see how multiculturism has turned out in Europe and now they are invading Australia and not without attendent problems. They wouldn't get off the bus? Excuse me.

Time Swedes et al stopped kissing their a**** but perhaps it's all too late.

These people have nothing and kick up Hell when they come to Sweden.

Try coming to Luxembourg - you get nothing at all.
