Madeleine ditches Nobel gala for New York do

Princess Madeleine is skipping this year's Nobel festivities in Stockholm for another event in New York, the Royal Court confirmed on Thursday.

”She has been working for some time in the US and has been invited to take part in an event there on the Nobel day,” the Royal Court's press officer Bertil Ternert told daily Aftonbladet.

The Swedish Royal Family are traditionally staple attendees at the annual white-tie Nobel awards ceremony held in Stockholm's Concert House, as well as the lavish dinner that follows at the Swedish capital's City Hall.

This year, the awards ceremonly will be attended by the Swedish King and Queen as well as Crown princess Victoria and Prince Daniel.

However, the entire Royal family will be in attendance at the post-award banquet later in the day. All but Princess Madeleine.

The non-attendance by the fashion savvy princess, generally regarded as the best dressed at the event, will come as a disappointment to many Swedes watching the show on TV.

”But I am sure her presence will be appreciated in the US,” Ternert told Aftonbladet.

The event the Princess is chosing before the Nobel festivities is a celebration to commemorate women in science through the years.

This year marks the 100-year anniversay since Marie Curie received her second Nobel prize, a fact which will be celebrated at the event Princess Madeleine will be attending in New York.

”This is being celebrated in the US due to the clash with this year's Nobel ceremony in Sweden,” said Ternert to the paper.

News-worthy, I suppose, to royal court followers: I suspect more than a few of us have other things to concern us

I do think it is worthwhile as they noted that this is not a snub to Sweden, but rather in support of another significant celebration. It does seem like the coordination could have been better... although perhaps that was intended by the organization leadership.

Besides, she really really likes New York and seizes any excuse she can to go there.

Given the choice between the Nobel thing and free trip to New York, I'd do the same.
19:55 November 24, 2011 by Alohart
Isn't she living in New York now? Her choice would be staying in New York or flying free to Stockholm to attend the Nobel thing.
20:29 November 24, 2011 by Kaethar
Yes, she lives in New York.

@DouglasGarner

I expect the timing wasn't something that could really be planned differently seeing as the New York event is also to celebrate a Nobel award. Don't they hold these awards at the same time every year? It's the current award on one side and a former one on the other. I expect that it would have been nice to hold both in Sweden, but then perhaps they decided that they didn't want one to run the risk of upstaging another...

Come on, The Local !!! This headline is totally misleading.

The event she is attending - women in science - is very worthy and is linked to the Nobel prize itself. Any anniversary of the award of any Nobel prize is bound to occur on 10th December !

Please don't dramatise things.

saying she works in new york is a bit funny.
09:20 November 25, 2011 by star10
it might be good for Swedenen's publicity in the U.S if the NY program gets big attention in the US. Her precence may help that.

I don't blame her at all. My mother attended a Nobel dinner many moons ago and thought it was very, very boring.
01:36 November 26, 2011 by Britt-Marie7
I have attended it too, a long time ago, but I thought it was very interesting and the dinner, together with the then King was great, and so was the dancing.

But Princess Madeleine have attended the ceremony already several times, so OK that she is not there.
