'Electro-oversensitive' man in mobile phone blackout threat

Published: 25 Nov 11 16:28 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/37576/20111125/

A Swedish man who sometimes wears a silver-coloured suit to protect himself from mobile phone mast radiation has demanded that local officials in Dalarna in central Sweden create a “radiation-free zone” to protect his health that may leave half the county without mobile phone coverage.

Despite a lack of scientific research into the health effects of the radiation emitted by mobile phone masts, Mora municipality in Dalarna County is about to create an area free of radiation following complaints filed by local resident Dan Bengtsson, 62.

”There may be a biological effect that we are unaware of. If we can play it safe it may open up for other authorities to do the same,” said municipal environment inspector Niklas Sjödin to daily Dagens Nyheter (DN).

Bengtsson, who lives outside of Mora, has long complained of headaches, back problems, and painful prickles in his heart.

He describes himself as "electro-oversensitive" and claims that his health has deteriorated since the mobile mast network was expanded in the area.

The silver suit he sometimes wears dampens the effect somewhat, but not completely, according to Bengtsson.

”It looks a little bit like a space suit,” Bengtsson told daily Aftonbladet.

According to Bengtsson, his condition is making his wife suffer as well, as she is forced to be there for him all the time.

”If I have to do a bank errand or similar she has to go into the bank and fetch me all the things I need,” he told the paper.

Bengtsson's problems began in 1992 when he lived on the west coast and worked as an electrical engineer for a power company.

“I see this as a work related injury,” he told the paper.

In 2005 he moved with his wife to the little village Venjan in Mora municipality in Dalarna, to escape the electricity and radiation.

“But I still have not managed to find a decent home. Mobile phone radiation is unavoidable. It is everywhere in Sweden,” he said.

The matter has already cost tax payers hundreds of thousands of kronor, according to DN, and there are 140 separate documents pertaining to the affair in the case file.

The municipality environment office is hoping to meet Bengtsson half way, despite the possibility that creating a mobile phone “dead zone” could leave other residents without any reception for their mobile phones and television sets.

The authority is hoping to make an official demand that mobile phone operators, as well as the state run TV and Radio distributor Terracom, must aim their masts a different direction.

The local authorities argue their right to make such a demand is supported by Swedish environment law.

Experts have criticized the move, however, saying that there are no scientific proof that the radiation is harmful to humans.

”The decision which the municipality is about to take is not based on any scientific evidence. There is no known biological mechanism for how a low level of exposure emitted by mobile base stations could have any detrimental health effects,” Maria Feychting, epidemiology professor at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, told DN.

The Mora environment office want the companies to implement measures to ensure that the electric field strength around the man's property can't exceed 50 nano watts per square metre.

According to DN, this is an extremely low number, the normal radiation level is about 500,000 nano watts per square metres.

”My guess is that this will constitute a problem for many trying to use their mobile phones. That is such a low limit that I'm afraid half of the county will be without TV,” said Yngve Hamnerius, professor of electromagnetics at Chalmers University of Technology.

The limit set on electric field strength is based on what the man estimates to be a tolerable level for his everyday life.

Local authorities did attempt to measure levels around the man's property, but surveying the area was never completed. However, they nevertheless feel that the level is adequate for mobile phone use in the area.

”We have looked through text books and come to that conclusion. We have Googled it and read some comments,” Sjödin told DN.

Someone should tell this man they are looking at the wrong type of radiation, it's the charged particles in the solar wind that is causing his illness (also causing auroras). That's why the move to Dalarna didn't help, the further North he moves, the worse it gets. They could turn of the sun to see if it helps.

It would make more sense to provide the guy with a led shielded home! I wonder if emissions from the Micro, computer, fm radio, sun, radon, not to mention magnetism from any motors or wires within the walls of the home and its surrounding areas.

I suggest a scientific experiment. Allow residents affected to charge the guy damages for loss of their ultilities (TV,Radio,Mobile phone etc.) while conversely offer a balancing payment to him for every 100,000 nanowatts he can stand. Should make an interesting study.

P.S. make the power levels a blind trial.
20:46 November 25, 2011 by BritVik
Why don't the authorities simply build a little Faraday cage round his home? If he is the only one affected, then it is only he who needs to be considered, and not the thousands who will be affected otherwise.

Perhaps the services of a shrink could be put to good use, also. Pandering to just one man's problem like this is surely going just a teeny weeny bit too far?

This illness, like allergies, has a threshold of when a person becomes sensitized. Scientists are predicting that about 50% of the population will become sensitized due to exposures--so read some research to make a well-informed comment:

Children whose mothers had high exposure to electromagnetic fields while pregnant may have an increased risk of developing asthma, U.S. researchers said on Monday in a study that adds to an ongoing debate.

900 MHz Radiation Induces Hypothyroidism and Apoptosis (cell suicide) in Thyroid Cells

Results of this study indicated that whole body exposure to modulated RFR similar to that emitted by GSM mobile phones caused pathological changes in the thyroid gland by altering gland morphology and inducing apoptotic [cell suicide] pathways.

Do nothing and tell him the zone has been created. I'm sure he'll be all better.

His best bet would be lead shielded box protected by 2m of earth.

Has the man been scientifically tested for senstivity to the electromagnetic spectrum ?

Thought not.

Wow, I'm surprised you didn't know that there are about 250,000 people in Sweden who have been disabled and/or have the same problems as this gentleman.

If you'd like to do some research of your own, check out www.weepinitiative.org talking to your doctor, or www.magdahavas.org and .com.

There have been numerous studies of the biological effects, one of which is it follows the same biological pathway as organophosphate poison similar to Sarin gas.. Read what Barrie Trower has to say about it. He is an expert on the effects.

The WHO calls the sensitivity a physical impairment. See what they had to say about it in May this year.

This is excellent news. Mora municipality is to be applauded for trying to reduce electromagnetic pollution to biologically safe levels. All those already allergic to this radiation will be grateful, and those concerned with plants and animals, where scientists report worrying effects from this long-term low-level radiation, now classified as a Group 2B carcinogen by the WHO's IARC.
20:51 November 26, 2011 by Svensksmith
If the electromagnetic pollution is high in Sweden, I can only imagine how high it is in more populated countries.
22:20 November 26, 2011 by hogar2010
Pure insanity.

For those of you that are sure this is real, how many people have been diagnosed with multiple personalities? Turns out that the whole "Cybil" episode, was nothing more than BS, a joke, a scam. (along with global warming). So the fact that many people "suffer" from this, means NOTHING.

This would be very easy to test. But I'm sure he won't do it, because it might expose him as a faker (or at least that this isn't the problem). And the state won't do it, least they risk being called non-believers.

Just build a simple "Faraday" cage, so he can't see it, and ask him to visit. See if he feels better or not. Then quietly turn on various objects like a phone, microwave, and again, see if he responds.

But the important thing her is, since when did ONE person, overrule everybody else? Have you noticed that? One person complains about a playground for kids, shut it down!! I know how this happened, but really, how did this happen!! One person, trumps everybody else these days. So now, thousand will go without phone service, just because of this one guy. If he is the ONE with the problem, why not, I know, shocking! Tell HIM TO MOVE!

PROVE he has a problem before acting on it. Why inconvenience everybody for him, when his "problem" hasn't even been proven yet!!

I was surprised to see the WHO reference from "Do Some Research" above, so I checked it out. Here is the part I found interesting: "The majority of studies indicate that EHS individuals cannot detect EMF exposure any more accurately than non-EHS individuals. Well controlled and conducted double-blind studies have shown that symptoms were not correlated with EMF exposure." But wait, there's more: "EHS has no clear diagnostic criteria and there is no scientific basis to link EHS symptoms to EMF exposure."

Today's word is "psychosomatic".

Until he can back up his claims with scientific evidence, all he's really done is involve everybody around him in his own delusion.

That this poor guy is a nutcase is bad enough, but that the local politicians have to prove that they are even greater nutcases than politicians in general is even worse.

Some of us are more sensitive than others. Our whole system is operated by electro magnetic fields. It has been proven many times since the 1940s that low level radiation can affect the nervous system. Before remarking with ignorance please do your in depth research as I have done over the passed 15 years.

Google The BioInititive and read it from one end to the other. Also Google Feb Sweden-Electro sensitive.I say again Some of us are more sensitive anad Some of us are more SENSIBLE!!
21:35 November 27, 2011 by Phosphor
I have not met the person featured in this article, so I am unqualified to speculate whether "this poor guy is a nutcase" (johan rebel). It is highly unlikely, however. Gro Harlem Brundtland, a medical doctor, former prime minister and former director general of the World Health Organisation, also suffered from similar sensitivity to electromagnetic radiation and is reported to have banned cell phones from her office, while the Nordic Council of Ministers over ten years ago classified such a sensitivity as an "El-allergy".

The Mora politicians are clearly able to understand the science of an emerging public health disaster better than most others. I wish them every success in improving the health of everyone.

It has been proven that wearing tin foil over one's hat eliminates this problem. The problem arises quite often among those who have been kidnapped and anally probed by aliens and wearing the tin foil hat thereafter works wonders. The municipality can solve the problem by granting Herr Bengtsson a tin foil subsidy.

I wonder why thelocal reporter failed to ask Professor Olle Johansson, Karolinska Institute for his views on this issue, especially in view of his research in the area of electrosensitivity? In Sweden electrohypersensitivity is considered as a 'functional impairment' that is caused by the environment. Look up articles and videos featuring Professor Olle Johansson.

Do not rely on assurances from the mobile industryand their minions. I recommend these websites: Electrosensitivity UK, Mast Victims UK, Radiation Research Trust websites for factual information and links to research.

Engtsson is NOT a nut case despite the ignorant and uninformed comments above.

The current ICNIRP guidelines protect ONLY against the thermal effects of the radiation and much lower biological maximum exposures are needed.

Read the BioInitiative Report which found that the present guidelines are OBSOLETE and do not protect health. A reduction of exposure limits was recommended.

Read the commendations of the EU Parliamentary Assembly Resolution 1815 dated 27 May 2011. Title: The potential dangers of electroamgnetic fields and the effect on the environment. Note especially point 8.1.4 "pay particular attention to electrosensitive persons suffering from a syndrome of intolerance to electromagnetic fields and introduce special measures to protect them , including the creation of wave-free areas not covered by the wireless network.

The WHO EMF Project received money from the mobile industry.Repacholi is and was a consultant to the mobile telecommiunncations industry. See EMFActs website.

To parents: Google 'Christine Kind' + 'Our life in the main beam' and you will find her presentations at the medical conferences in Bamberg or Fuerth. Their family has been extensively studied by German medical doctors and their insurers. Theyere advised by doctors to flee from their own home because of the medically documented effects on all the children, including the 18 month old child. The radiation can affect the immune system, melatonin and serotonin production, the blood brain barrier, calcium eflfux, heat shock proteins, amongst others.

Also look up the papers written by Dr Christine Aschermann - she is a psychotherapist who is qualified in psychiatry and neurology.

By the way the manjority of the studies that have been carried out on phone masts and that are listed on the WHO website HAVE found adverse effects, as you would discover if you look up the literature.

Anybody can be affected by the emissions from phone masts, DECT cordless phones, wifi/Bluetooth devices.

Mr. Bengtsson , like all electrosensitive individuals need a safe environment to live and work in. Anyone can become electrosensitive.

I am now electrosensitive myself as a result of constant blasting from nearby phone masts. I am a qualified psychologist [Masters degree in Psychology].

From what I hear,If you wear a hat made from Aluminum foil,it will protect you from the electromagnetic waves the governments beam .Maybe he should try that. A small propeller on top helps.

Sorry apart from digging a deep hole in the ground or a Faraday cage around his house the only solution is a bullet as we are bathe in electromagnetic radiation everyday both man made and natural (in fact we tend to die if we don't get some sunshine) even the harmful radiation is good, funny enough the area around Chernobyl is really healthy so radiation is healthy and maybe bad depending on what and who it seems .

I don't beleive in evolution but maybe we need to implement it in this case !

no use we breed up electro sensitive people!

The ignorance displayed above is just unbelieveable. This radiation is very much an issue that most people are unaware of, and those who are unaware of it, just joke and laugh about it. People just want to embrace the new technology without any thought for consequence. Yes, iPhones are an amazing invention, as is the mobile phone, iPads, laptops... but the technology that is employed to carry the communication from one device to the next is causing many, many people discomfort and illness and this is unacceptable in today's society. No amount of ignorant comments - "psychosomatic", "nut case" and joking at this situation will change that fact. It takes time for the body's threshold to be lowered and once that happens, there's no going back - you're sensitive forever. Regular exposure to anything will increase your sensitivity to that particular thing. Unfortunately the human body is not fit to be exposed 24/7 to man-made electromagnetic fields and the microwave emissions from phone mast base-stations, wifi, DECT phones... It's just a matter of time. Pull your ignorant heads out of your arses, take a step back and ask yourself - "What if this is true?" -Fact: our bodies are being irradiated 24/7 by these phone masts, nobody has given us a choice in the matter. They just erect the masts and this pulsing radiation bombards our bodies continuously - day & night.

Just because we don't see or hear it, doesn't mean it's not there. It's been scientifically proven that the cells in our bodies react to this radiation. This fact stands - no matter what industry subsidized "scientests" say.

The prediction by Austrian experts in this field, is that by 2017, 50% of the world's population will be electro-hyper-sensitive or "nut cases" or "psychosomatic" fools - whichever side of the fence you're on. 50%!!! That's a lot of Faraday Cages! And out of those 50%, probably 2% will be aware of what is causing the problem, and the rest will be popping pills to try and cure this mysterious nauseous sensation, unable to work, filling hospital beds... Global healthcare is not prepared for this kind of catastrophy.

Personally speaking, I feel it's no coincedence that Mr. Steve Jobs (God rest his soul) died of a "rare" form of cancer. His body would have been continuously irradiated by wireless technology for many years, long before these products were launched onto the market - You live by the sword, you die by the sword... and unfortunately we're not being given a choice, we're standing on the battlefield.

RESPECT TO MR. DAN BENGTSSON & MORA MUNICIPALITY FOR STANDING UP FOR THEIR RIGHTS!!!
