Fredrik Reinfeldt criticized in new book

The Moderate party culture is built on “silence and obedience”, according to a former MP who has written a book about her experiences representing the party in the Swedish Riksdag.

“MPs function mostly like extras, as something pretty to show off when democracy needs a face,” wrote former MP Anne-Marie Pålsson in her new book “Knapptryckarkompaniet” (“The button-pressing brigade”).

According to Pålsson, there is no space within the party for independent-thinking MPs.

“Especially not when representing a government power, then that shrinks down to next to nothing,” she told news agency TT.

The image of the Moderate party leader, current prime minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, is hardly flattering either.

Reinfeldt, largely perceived in Sweden as calm and listening, is portrayed as double natured; cool and collected on one hand and ruthless on the other.

“It is practically Machiavellian,” Pålsson said to TT.

In the book she describes one instance when the Moderate Riksdag MPs questioned the party line regarding the controversial signals intelligence law, the so called FRA-law, from 2009.

“What do you think you are? Some sort of referral authority? Who gets to think what you want? You are here to carry out party policy and that is all,” Pålsson quotes Reinfeldt as saying to his MPs.

Reinfeldt, who has so far chosen not to comment on the book, learnt his hard line by predecessor and current foreign minister Carl Bildt, according to Pålsson.

“He has himself described how, as a young man, he was reprimanded by Carl Bildt. He knows what it is like and has learnt it from Carl Bildt,” she told TT.

Anne–Marie Pålsson was a Moderate Riksdag MP between 2002 and 2010.

Not only is the Moderate party built on a culture of silence and obedience, it would seem it is also built on a foundation of hypocrisy. For instance, when Reinfeldt defends Bildt as a champion of human rights, despite Bildt's involvement with Lundin Consortium in the perpetration of crimes against humanity.

Another example of hypocrisy that stands out is the case of Ewa Björling pretending to champion human rights and Internet freedom, while her government passes legislation that contravenes Sweden's pre-existing commitments to human rights frameworks such as the ICESCR.

More generally, it would appear that Swedish culture itself is built on conformism and blind obedience to centralized authority, through an enculturation process that begins in daycare.

@Robinhood

The REAL Robin Hood was a man for the people, he detested the sheriff of Nottingham and Prince John, who were friends of the bankers and the right wing fat cats. He was not an "I'm alright jack f*** the rest", he was a real man and is respected all over the world as an honest man.

You simple don't fit the name you are using, you are the typical "I'm alright jack f*** the rest", just like many other neo right wing followers. People like you are supporting people who don't even care about you. Can you not see the only people that gain anything from the neo right wing, are people who are already busting at the seams with cash? And it is always the unemployed and lower paid that pay for it.

I think the supporters of the right wing (who believe anything they are told by the like of Reinfeldt, Borg and Bidlt) should all be named "sheep", then you could have sheep1, sheep2, sheep3 and so on, so maybe you could change from Robinhood (because you are not a person for the people) to sheep100 e.g. Then all the little neo right wingers can go around going Mää, Mää, Mää.

"cool and collected on one hand and ruthless on the other. ". Isn't that what you want from a leader?

@Alieninsweden, thou art on to something with thy thesis. A book back in the 70's was done by a man called Robert Huntford called 'The New Totalitarians. here's the link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_Totalitarians and he mirrored the conclusions that thou hast also.

It is quite scary just how submissive Swedes are when the 'benevolent' state speaks and orates what is 'dogma'.
