Support for the Social Democrats is at a new record low of 27.7 percent, according to a new major poll by Statistics Sweden (SCB), beating a previous low of 29 percent.

"These are very serious numbers, but I'm not really surprised," said Social Democrat party secretary Carin Jämtin.

Jäm,tin explained her comments in that recent turmoil afflicting the party and its leader Håkan Juholt were likely to get a reaction from voters, calling on the party to respond.

"It is a very clear signal that we have received from voters. Now let's listen to the signals and there are really only two things to do: work harder and become clearer in our policies," she said.

The new SCB poll, considered to be the most important measure of Swedes' political sympathies, puts the Moderates as the country's largest party, garnering support from 33.4 percent of voters.

Altogether, the four parties of the centre-right Alliance government have support of 48.4 percent.

The Centre Party received 5.5 percent, a rise of 1 percentage point. The Liberal (Folkpartiet) polled 5.6 percent, a decline of 0.4 percentage points and the Green Party retained their position as third largest party on 11.7 percent, a record high.

However, support for the Christian Democrats came in at 3.8 percent, below the 4 percent threshold required for representation in the Riksdag.

The Left Party also increased, up 0.7 points to 5.2 percent, while the Sweden Democrats remained unchanged at 5.7 percent.

More information to follow soon.

A change in leadership should be a first step. Juholt has screwed up with the recent scandal and he lacks clear vision that S supporters can get behind. They need a fresh face with a clean background and a regenerative energy and clear vision. Simple as that.

Juholt's Social Democrats obviously haven't yet given voters reason enough why they should give their support. Quite often, governments LOSE elections rather than opposition parties WIN them.

As for the Social Democrats themselves, because they've been in power regularly, up to 2006, it hasn't dawned on them yet that they need to rethink strategy and policies

Juholt should definitely stay in charge of S and do his best to turn these low ratings around. He's the man to lead S where it needs to go!

Too right - down the plughole. I wouldn't buy a second hand car from this man.

Mona's just mad and is mobbing him with her friends because she doesn't want to end up the shortest-serving party leader ever.
