Swede acquitted over Greece 'fake rape' claim

A Swedish woman accused of making false rape accusations while on holiday in Greece was acquitted of defamation charges on Thursday by a Greek court.

"She is extremely happy and relieved. I'm naturally very happy as well," Gunilla von Wachenfeldt, lawyer for Swedish "Anna" told the TT news agency following the court's decision.

The defamation trial of Anna, accused of making false rape accusations after reporting an alleged rape to the police while on holiday, was held on Thursday in Greece.

Ahead of the trial, Anna said she would wait to hear about the trial's outcome from her home in Sweden despite being summoned by the Greek court. She feared what may have happened if she had gone to Greece to participate in the trial.

“I think I would be locked up. As they try to make a victim into a perpetrator I think they are capable of anything,” said Anna to TV4 News.

The episode began back in 2008, when Anna went on holiday to the Greek island of Samos. On her last night she claimed to have been brutally raped and beaten, according to Sweden's TV4.

After reporting the crime to authorities in Greece, she then went back to Sweden where she underwent a medical examination.

The Swedish doctor found evidence corroborating her story but despite the findings of the Swedish medical team being forwarded to Greece, Anna learned in 2009 that the prosecutor on Samos would not pursue the case any further.

One of the reasons given for the case having been dropped was that it had become common for holidaying women, especially Scandinavians, to say that they had been raped during their stay in Greece, in order to claim insurance money upon their return.

Although shocked by what she had been told, Anna resigned to trying to move on with her life.

However, some time afterwards she was contacted by a Greek public prosecution office, which informed her that she was being countersued for making false rape accusations.

The case has received a lot of attention in Sweden’s legal circles, as it is felt it has been handled in a strange way by the Greek authorities.

Anna’s lawyer said ahead of the trial that she was surprised that the case has made it to court.

“When I have been in contact with the Greek authorities it has seemed as if they realize that charging Anna goes against the right of a fair trial, but they still choose to pursue the case, which I find odd,” von Wachenfeldt said to TV4.

Today, Anna is suffering from stress related illness and is partially on sickness benefits, which she clams to be caused by her ordeal in Greece.

“Even if I try to not think about what happened, my body remembers,” Anna said to TV4 News.

Whats good for the goose is good for the gander, as Swedes want to be respected i their own country, they should also respect other people's countries and their laws. Greece is a member of the European union, are we being told here that their legal system is inferior to Sweden's? ..Anna should go and face the law there if she is innocent and hav nothing to fear other wise Assange has no business coming to face the authorithies in Sweden. Same goes for those Swedes who entered Ethiopia with terrorists without permission, regardless of their intentions, laws are laws and i personally think they should go to jail in Ethiopia for their actions.

@bolababu

The problem with the greek legal system, as is with everything else in Greece is that it is corrupt.

Not knowing the details of this case and what really happened (I wasn't there) I anyway fully support the decission of this swedish woman not to go there. She is right in thinking that she may be in danger if she goes there. We are talking about a country that on government level has been cheating its way into the Eurozone.

Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, the words "false rape allegation" and "Swedish girl" are linked.

Anna is not the only Swedish girl to have her credibility questioned in this way. People just don't believe Swedish "rape" victims any more. In many places, if the victim is Swedish there is automatically sufficient reasonable doubt to justify an acquital.

Sweden's wierd sexual offences laws have many victims and protect nobody.

@eppie;

well then Assange should be afraid to come to Sweden since he is being haunted by the US and we all know by now that Sweden is one of America's most loyal puppets or?

This is like a 'flip side' to the Julian Assange saga: could 'Anna' be served with a European Arrest Warrant too (by Greece)? If so, will she also turn up in the UK and fight extradition through the courts there - in view of their experience in such matters?

"Today, Anna is suffering from stress related illness and is partially on sickness benefits, which she clams to be caused by her ordeal in Greece."

I wonder when those benefits began. If right after her return from Greece, that might tend to support their charge. If they began after her arrest warrant, then that's something else.

I don't know what happened, nor do I know the people involved. However, I DO KNOW that Swede's consider gaming the Social Welfare system socially acceptable. If asked if the gaming is acceptable they will emote horror while sniggering inside.

Assange must be enjoying a bit of a snigger himself.

It sounds as if she did not visit a doctor in Greece right after the rape took place. Did she or did she not? If not, I find that very suspicious. Any evidence found by a Swedish doctor several days after the fact must be weak evidence as it has been contaminated or otherwise deteriorated. Surely the Greek authorities would have sent her to the hospital right away. DId they or did they not?
11:06 December 8, 2011 by yourkidding
Judging by many of the recent news stories in Sweden, you would have thought she would feel right at home. Remember the girl who went to her Swedish school principal after being raped at school and was told "boys will be boys" or the woman who was sexually compromised while passed out and the SWEDISH court ruled "It is not a crime if you are unconcious when the act is perpetrated" Case after case is dismissed right here in Sweden or ´sluffed off. No difference in Greece. Really can't understand the Swedish outrage...they should be use to it by now considering SWEDISH rape accountability and sentencing.
11:49 December 8, 2011 by spo10
Why didn't she get a medical examination in Greece after she reported the incident to the police? She should have done it there to add more credibility to her case.

eppie, as a Greek i must say that i am not corrupted, my husband is not corrupted, my son is not corrupted, my family is not corrupted, my friends are not corrupted, my employer and my colleagues are not corrupted... And not everything in Greece is corrupted... We are hardworking, proud and decent people, that the crisis has kneel us down! Sure, there are bad civil servants who INDEED are corrupted, but they are not the rule, they are the exception of the rule, and, for sure, they can not be the reflection of a whole nation! Enough with the insults! What are you? German?

Confucius - he very wise man.

He say rape impossible. Woman with skirt up run faster than man with trouser down.

So what does Anna 'Assange' have to say to that?
13:39 December 8, 2011 by robban70226
Absolutely,!!!

'Anna' be served with a European Arrest Warrant too by Greece!!!

She say you are medieval-minded, emotionally-retarded, misogynist unfit to be allowed to waste our time with your toxic comments on these forums again.

I very much hope the moderator says the same thing.

poor woman; sick leave, she should be given a life long pension. After vacationing in Greece she should never have to work again. In fact her whole family is suffering and her friends; they should all be given a life long pensions. It's the Swedish way.

And if she says she was raped than of course she was raped. Women would never lie about rape. I always believe what they say, evidence is not needed. "All men are wife beaters and rapist.s" (as gov't sponsored posters of a few years back proclaimed) It's the swedish way.
17:12 December 8, 2011 by swenrika
I wonder... with her having been found NOT GUILTY, it implies somebody IS GUILTY of rape, furthermore I wonder if they now will prosicute that "someone"

Also interesting and not relted to this but Mr. Wiki is the sentance "it had become common for holidaying women, especially Scandinavians, to say that they had been raped ", makes one wonder if all is well over there in that case as well. and still on that case......

"09:39 December 8, 2011 by eppie

Are you implying Swedish Law is superior? if so I urge you to think again, it is pretty flawed as well, maybe not that corrupt, but certainly not perfect either.

Did she not go to local police after Rape, makes me just not believe this story....

When I was last in Greece on a work event I saw 2 men grab a drunk girl as she left a nightclub, drag her in a alcove and start to tear her clothing off. There were at least a dozen people who turned their backs and "avoided" seeing it... I am not a threat but I ran over and shouted for them to "Back off and let her go" (In English).. because I was making a scene they backed up and one said laughing "It's ok, she's a tourist" as they left... I was so stunned I almost threw up. I got her back to her hotel and I spent the rest of my weekend vowing I will never go to Greece again.
