Charges filed after mass food poisoning

A café owner from Dalarna in central Sweden is facing criminal charges after 86 people were taken ill with food poisoning after eaten food prepared on her premises just a few days after inspectors had told her to close her shop.

”I was one of those who fell ill. I make no claims for myself, but I know others who had to be off work due to the illness,” said Lars Enoksson, business administrator for the municipality to local paper Dala-Demokraten.

According to the paper, at least 10 disgruntled customers have since reported the 27-year-old female café owner in hopes of getting compensation for the meals they had at her shop.

However, prior to the visit by the staff from the local authority, the café had been visited by the inspectors from the environmental health department, who carried out a check of the food served at the establishment.

The inspector found several serious flaws to the general cleanliness and food hygiene.

According to the report, the inspector was worried that there may be a serious risk of cross contamination between food groups.

Due to the risks, the café owner received a warning and was banned from handling food on the premises until she had carried out the changes demanded by the inspector.

Despite the order, the woman chose to continue running the café for another three days without having carried out any of the changes that the environmental health department had flagged.

According to the prosecutor, this makes the woman guilty of crimes against Swedish food laws as well.

The prosecutor has also argued that the crimes have been committed deliberately and that the owner should therefore be fined, the paper reported.

The 27-year-old woman has denied all allegations and since the incident has closed up shop.

Ok just wondering if the picture above is associated with this event. If yes, did the girl lady know she is being photographed in the toilet? And Why the hell would you take this picture

This is the main reason i dont eat out here in Sweden, the policing of substandard establishment hygiene is ridiculous.
14:53 December 12, 2011 by lahlily
yeah, agree... A LOT of substandard food to be had in Sweden... especially in small little towns along highways, at little random kiosks and other random restaurants here and there. i have never eaten so much substandard food than in sweden... youre fine if you go to nice restaurants in the city (bigger cities mind you) but watch out once you start exploring ...

Stockholm restaurants are in no way exempt from this. I got very sick a year or so ago after eating at Muggen on Götgatan. Yeah, I named the place. Used to be my favorite café but now I won't go near the place. To really be safe, one has to eat only at very expensive restaurants. Typical restaurants that the everyday bloke can afford are crawling with nasties and lazy kitchen staff. I am always amazed to see cafés open in the morning with half-eaten pies and cakes obviously from the day before and charging full price for them as if they were fresh. Makes me fear the mayonnaise-covered shrimp sandwich.

I hope she goes to jail for it. Food poisoning is not something to be taken lightly.

Is this picture taken at the offices of the Local or is it a follow-up on "The weekend's Finest"?

Sometimes I walk in to a cafe and see staff handling food without gloves and stopping to scratch their head or face ... oooeeeuw! Then at McDonalds in Lund I saw the burger station dude handle the buns and place the sliced cheese on the bread with his bare hands ... you just got to love the mucky fingerprint on your cheeseburger cheese. I travel a lot in Sweden and often have to stop 3 or 4 different places before finding somewhere acceptable. I have a checklist. #1. The kitchen is open and visible, this means it has to be kept clean. #2. Go straight to the bathroom and wash your hands first. If the bathroom is not clean, don't eat there. Out of the 86 people who got sick, I'm sure they all washed their hands before eating and abstained from their bacteria infested mobile phones during their food. Have you ever seen people at McD's ever go wash their hands before eating with their bare hands? Even worse eating in your car .. disgusting. 2 sides to every coin.

"The inspector found several serious flaws to the general cleanliness and food hygiene."

See ... that's the part of the story I don't understand. You work for the agency that polices these type of places to ensure people don't get sick from eating the food, and you find several "serious flaws," and then ask the owner very politely to make changes? Ummm ... shouldn't the correct method of action have been to close the restaurant UNTIL the changes were made ... not continue to allow the business to serve people food, and hope they actually change somewhere down the road ... possibly.

Maybe they should consider adopting some kind of visual inspection seal to allow customers to know the status of the establishment's last health inspection. That way if you see a place with a giant "NG" of "Fail" on it's front window you can just go someplace else. Probably would also give the establishments a clear incentive to make sure they do well on their health inspections, so they don't have a bad grade posted on their front window for everyone to see ...

Just saying ...
