UK court grants Assange extradition appeal

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been granted permission to appeal against extradition from Britain to Sweden over rape allegations and a hearing will start on February 1, a court said Friday.

"The Supreme Court has granted permission to appeal and a hearing has been scheduled for two days, beginning on 1 February 2012," said a statement from the Supreme Court, the highest court in England.

The decision means Assange will spend a second Christmas at the country mansion of a wealthy supporter in Norfolk, eastern England.

He was arrested last December on a European arrest warrant issued by Sweden after allegations by two women of sexual assault and rape.

The 40-year-old Australian strongly denies any wrongdoing and says the sex with the women was consensual.

He believes the allegations are politically motivated and linked to WikiLeaks' release of hundreds of thousands of classified US files about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Supreme Court decision comes as Bradley Manning, the US soldier accused of passing the files to WikiLeaks, is due to make his first appearance in a US court on Friday.

The hearing will determine whether the former intelligence analyst, who turns 24 on Saturday, should be tried on charges which could see him sentenced to life imprisonment.

Manning is accused of downloading 260,000 US diplomatic cables, videos of US air strikes and US military reports from Afghanistan and Iraq between November 2009 and May 2010 while serving in Iraq, and transferring them to WikiLeaks.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, speaking on the eve of Manning's hearing, said it was a "very unfortunate and damaging action... that put at risk individuals and relationships."

Manning's supporters say his health has sharply deteriorated while in custody.

With the changes to the legal system in the UK, it will be interesting to see which way this goes.

Common sense at last.

An innocent man would jump at the chance to face his accusers face to face in a court of law, and expose them as the liars he claims they are.

Not, bcterry, when the US stands behind the scenes flogging the Swedish judicial system to extradite him to the US regardless of whether he is innocent of these spurious accusations.

"Not, bcterry, when the US stands behind the scenes flogging the Swedish judicial system to extradite him to the US regardless of whether he is innocent of these spurious accusations. "

And your proof for this?

That's a great talking point, but where's the substance?

Wouldn't it be much simpler to extradite him from Britain, and forgo all the extra paperwork and travel to Sweden?

According to many conspiracists, they "flog" the British judicial system, as well.

People such as bcterry, always appear to exist in a cave, as all the multitude of articles, reports, etc., published over the itnervening years appear beyond them.

Yet how many people are aware of even official reports of financial fraud by members of the US military in Iraq????

As far as I understood the question was HOW DO YOU PROVE THAT 'US stands behind the scenes flogging the Swedish judicial system to extradite him to the US'.

I quote: 'That's a great talking point, but where's the substance?'

Maybe he just wants a trial by jury instead of a trial by short-term, partisan judges (nämndemän). Maybe he wants the prison sentence after the conviction instead of before (häktad), the potential 500 SEK per day notwithstanding. Maybe he just thinks rape only means non-consensual sex.

But he was, and is, wrong. This is Sweden, not the UK. And now he should be held to answer for his mistakes. In Sweden and no where else.

Sweden has a sad history of extra judicial rendition on behalf of the US. Earlier this year, Sweden paid millions of crowns compensation to a gentleman kidnapped and handed over by SÄPÖ to the CIA for torture in Egypt. Of course the fact Sweden has past form illegally handing people to the US, is not proof it will do so in this case. But it is enough to create reasonable doubt whether Sweden is a safe place for people in which the US would like to "welcome". As far as i am aware, no person has ever been illegally rendered from the UK to the US.

People such as sgt-doom have trouble staying on point, as all of a sudden we are over in Iraq, as it somehow is directly connected to the U.S. apparently "flogging the Swedish judicial system".

city-walker seems to be a little confused as well.
14:03 December 17, 2011 by city_walker
I merely wanted more examples of Sweden 'illegally handing people' to the USA.

One precedent, where Swedish government admitted it was wrong?

Where is the proof that U.S. is "flogging the Swedish judicial system"? Who is confused here?
14:33 December 17, 2011 by RobinHood
@city walker

One case is all it takes to establish a criminal record (kidnapping, rendition and torture are indeed terrible crimes). After that, you are a criminal, and as such, you can not complain if people never trust you again.

I'm embarrassed as an American that this has gone on so long. I love the Swedish charges, 'Sex by Surprise.' The alleged victim hasn't shown any sign of disease, only of wanting to notch her crotch with another celebrity.
