Swedish tennis talent hit by corruption scandal

Swedish teenager Lucas Renard was banned for six months and fined $5,000 after admitting corruption, the Tennis Integrity Unit announced on Friday.

"The case against 19-year old Mr Renard was based on the findings of a Tennis Integrity Unit investigation, which was then considered by an independent Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer," said a TIU statement.
"The sanction applies with immediate effect and means that the player is not eligible to participate in any tournament or competition organised or authorised by the governing bodies of professional tennis.
"Mr Renards offense contravened Article D.1.d of the Uniform Tennis Anti Corruption Program - 'No Covered Person shall, directly or indirectly, contrive or attempt to contrive the outcome or any other aspect of any Event'."
The TIU did not reveal the details of the case against Renard whose career earnings of $5,790 will just about cover his fine.
Speaking with the Aftonbladet newspaper, Renard's father said the incident involved and attempt by the 19-year-old to buy his way back into a tournament last summer after being eliminated.
