"BANG!!!! BANG!!!! BANG!!! In the midst of the Stanley Cup’s Eastern Conference semifinals series, every Bostonian knows it is all about Bruins ice hockey. Oh right. I am in Sweden, home of the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation GOLD Champions. And there is certainly no doubt ice hockey fever has taken over Sweden. A lot of Swedes,..." READ »

'The Local' is an English language site not an English site. Just say whatever the American's say are they are the majoritive Engish speaking nation.
I am much more partial to the NORTH "AMERICAN" language (USA and Canada) that has about 400 million speakers verses the "English" language which has about 100 million speakers.
Why should we "settle" for the bastardize version of our own language.
It is the "Queen's English" after all. We can't help it is our "less" intelligent North American friends have bastardized it because they are incapable of understand and coping with the high level of the original...
And it is actually *Boxing* day as in, putting unwanted presents back in their boxes for return on the 27th......
"And it is actually *boxing* day as in, putting unwanted presents back in their boxes for return on the 27th....."
For next christmas, I want a 800 cui box full of pine oil and send it back via airmail dropped right on top of Stockholm.
Try understanding the Native Mainers on the Downeast Maine Coast.
They talk as though they had a mouth full of worms.
Try understanding what passes for English in:West Virginia Hills, Applachia PA, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, or Texas.
A similar difficulty can be encountered in New England in Mass, particularly in Boston, which should offer courses in their peculiarly mangled version without "Rs."
The Amish of PA, and elsewhere, have a particular accent to their English as well, and their version of German is actually Swabish.
Canada is no comparison with English to the United States.
Indeed, go to Quebec to discover that fact. However, all across Canada one can hear French spoken, and Quebequois dominates in Quebec.
The United States have their own versions of what passes for English.
Preaching about those versions on a Swedish website is a bit too much.
Swedes learn correct English in Sweden, and correct English does not come out of the United States.
Could ask why the language on the local should be restriced to one country of English speakers as Boxing Day is used in Great Britain, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand
So many people cannot handle an Old English Expression! - do people have so little going on in their lives that the use of a traditional term causes outrage? Perhaps you should Google it?
And as far as the "Queens English" is concerned.... last time i check America defeated your army to declare our independence............I know you all probably hate to remember that, but your precious "Queens English" has nothing to do with us because we do not live it a fantasy world of Kings and Queens who do absolutely NOTHING to contribute to society except collection of your taxes, every once in a while getting some air and newspaper time by having an extravagant tax funded wedding. you can have your "Queens English" and your "Kings and Queens", and your ridiculous taxes
Next time you tell us how intelligent you are, please would you get the spelling and grammar right. You look a terrible idiot if you do not.
No one said anyting against China
"Oh my God! They killed Kenny! ...You bastards!", Quote from South Park.
I have to say that the storm (hurricane) Dagmar was impressive. Actually had some damage around here.
When it comes to boxing day, its origins are obscured. Like @ooh456 joked at, my Swedish honey thought it was about boxing matches. At least @Puffin presented one of the more acceptable definitions.
My definition was a joke related to holiday stress. I think my definition was much more humorous than the one that @Grass came up with.
Though English and North American, or "American", have the same origin and are very similar, I view them as 2 separate languages. The rules, the use of the language and its pronunciation are diverging. In Iceland you can learn either American or English. In Sweden, contrary to what @waffen says, they will teach either American or English. @waffen is also wrong in that Canadian is indistinguishable from their U.S.A. cousin.
@Swinglish 1 -"..Do they use the word TOSSER in America."
Normally you have to specify WHERE you want HER - TOSSED. (Midget tossing is much more common.)
Just to clarify my answer-
She Offered her Honor,
He Honored her Offer,
and all night long,
it was Honor and Offer.
Some of you guys seem to take yourselves way too seriously.
