Warnings issued as new winter storm approaches

Published: 25 Dec 11 10:40 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/38146/20111225/

A Class 2 warning has been issued for Sweden as a storm, dubbed Dagmar, approaches from the west.

"We have issued Class 2 warnings and the most powerful winds are expected in the southern peaks of Norrland. There's a risk of 25 or 30 metres per second. That's almost hurricane strength," said Alexandra Ohlsson of the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, SMHI, to news agency TT.

According to the forecasters, regions of the counties Jämtland and Västernorrland look to be particularly in danger of being hit by the storm, although much of the country can expect strong winds.

During the afternoon on Sunday the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket), announced that all rail traffic to and from Norrland would be halted from 8pm onwards in anticipation of the storm approaching from the west.

"The reason is that we are worried trains will be left standing following fallen down cables and other obstacles," said Peter Behrman of the agency to TT.

SMHI had already issued a Class 1 warning on December 23d and there were widespread problems on the roads throughout Christmas Eve as the weather progressively got worse across Sweden.

With Dagmar believed to be one of the most powerful storms of the past 30 years, Norway has been most seriously affected so far.

The Norwegian coast seems worst affected, with a Hurtig Ruten cruise liner having to postpone its trip between Bergen and Tromsø on Christmas Eve.

Parts of Iceland have also been hit by the gales.

A Class 2 warning is classified as weather which could pose a danger to the public, cause major damage to property and major disruptions in essential services.

People in Sweden intending to go out or travel have been advised to find out the latest information from the radio or on the internet before setting out, especially later on in the day.

There were already numerous reports of accidents on the roads on Christmas Eve and conditions in many parts could get even worse.

This is in marked contrast to the mild weather in the Stockholm area, where residents in Södermalm, in the southern part of the capital, reported seeing wild strawberries growing in the unseasonably warm conditions for the season.

Despite being disruptive to people planning to be out and about over the Christmas weekend, the storm is expected to blow through quickly as it makes its way further east over Finland.

Conditions should be more stable by Boxing Day on December 26th, according to forecasters.

'Boxing Day' ??

'The Local' is an English language site not an English site. Just say whatever the American's say are they are the majoritive Engish speaking nation.

Hmmmmm......Do they use the word TOSSER in America???
23:40 December 25, 2011 by DamnImmigrant
Yeah Boxing Day - The day after Christmas when the stress becomes too great for people to handle and everyone starts fighting each other (Boxing is more civilized word for Fighting) - so Boxing Day - the day of great violence after Christmas day.

I am much more partial to the NORTH "AMERICAN" language (USA and Canada) that has about 400 million speakers verses the "English" language which has about 100 million speakers.
03:38 December 26, 2011 by Grass
Oh, here we go again.

Why should we "settle" for the bastardize version of our own language.

It is the "Queen's English" after all. We can't help it is our "less" intelligent North American friends have bastardized it because they are incapable of understand and coping with the high level of the original...

And it is actually *Boxing* day as in, putting unwanted presents back in their boxes for return on the 27th......

Grass:

"And it is actually *boxing* day as in, putting unwanted presents back in their boxes for return on the 27th....."

For next christmas, I want a 800 cui box full of pine oil and send it back via airmail dropped right on top of Stockholm.
09:06 December 26, 2011 by ooh456
I don't understand. Why do English people box on the day after Christmas? I don't think Jesus would approve of that message.

Americanized. indeed!

Try understanding the Native Mainers on the Downeast Maine Coast.

They talk as though they had a mouth full of worms.

Try understanding what passes for English in:West Virginia Hills, Applachia PA, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, or Texas.

A similar difficulty can be encountered in New England in Mass, particularly in Boston, which should offer courses in their peculiarly mangled version without "Rs."

The Amish of PA, and elsewhere, have a particular accent to their English as well, and their version of German is actually Swabish.

Canada is no comparison with English to the United States.

Indeed, go to Quebec to discover that fact. However, all across Canada one can hear French spoken, and Quebequois dominates in Quebec.

The United States have their own versions of what passes for English.

Preaching about those versions on a Swedish website is a bit too much.

Swedes learn correct English in Sweden, and correct English does not come out of the United States.

LOL - the tradition of Boxing Day actually pre-dates the USA - Boxing Day is about giving thanks and charity - something that some moaning posters might like to consider

Could ask why the language on the local should be restriced to one country of English speakers as Boxing Day is used in Great Britain, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand

So many people cannot handle an Old English Expression! - do people have so little going on in their lives that the use of a traditional term causes outrage? Perhaps you should Google it?

bahahahaha @GRASS...... "Less intelligent North American friends"......... i never had a problem with Europeans and i dont think most Americans do, but after living in Europe now, i almost hate EVERYTHING about this place...... You all are the most ungrateful, uneducated people about America there is...... i love the argument Europeans have about some Americans not being able to point out worthless locations on a map like Paris, or London...... while after moving here and seeing what all the fuss is about have been asked TWICE if we have Mcdonalds in America LOL!!!!!!................. please save yourself the embarrassment of referring to the most powerful, technologically advanced country in the world as "less intelligent" simply because we do not refer to cigarettes as FAGS or balls as bullocks..... most of our basic community colleges offer a better education than European "University"

And as far as the "Queens English" is concerned.... last time i check America defeated your army to declare our independence............I know you all probably hate to remember that, but your precious "Queens English" has nothing to do with us because we do not live it a fantasy world of Kings and Queens who do absolutely NOTHING to contribute to society except collection of your taxes, every once in a while getting some air and newspaper time by having an extravagant tax funded wedding. you can have your "Queens English" and your "Kings and Queens", and your ridiculous taxes

kenny8076@, I had to laugh, your point about being asked stupid questions reminded me when my niece (educated in the American system) asked me if people in England celebrate the 4th of July. So as you can see, the question of the trans Atlantic intelligence gradient is very open for debate. :-)

Boxing Day is a purely British aristocracy creation, generally when the lord/lady/duke/duchess/earl or any big land / factory owner etc.. celebrated christmas day all his or her staff would have to work, porters/maids/cooks etc.. It is believed that the staff would then use the left over boxes for their presents and celebrate the following day. Hence Boxing day was created and a became (in time) a british public holiday. How much truth is in this who knows. But more truth than santa dressing in red etc. !

@Kenny

Next time you tell us how intelligent you are, please would you get the spelling and grammar right. You look a terrible idiot if you do not.

@kenny8076 "please save yourself the embarrassment of referring to the most powerful, technologically advanced country in the world as "less intelligent""

No one said anyting against China

@kenny8076 : you are stupid enough not to know that the US is the cancer of this world!!! Without you, Europe would be a much better place so yes, stay in your country, no need for you to pollute Europe even more with your stupidity!
17:51 December 27, 2011 by Ambre
@kenny8076 : you also seem to forget that the real americans are the ones who were already there before immigrants mainly from Uk and Ireland decided that they had the right to destroy/kill them so that they could get their land, the actual US is just a bunch of barbaric, nasty immigrants who didnt mind killing the people who were already there and dared to cage them like animals, reall, nothing to be proud of, ignorant p r ** c k

@Ambre, @Kevin Harris, @BrittInSweden, @ameribrit responding to kenny8076;

"Oh my God! They killed Kenny! ...You bastards!", Quote from South Park.

I have to say that the storm (hurricane) Dagmar was impressive. Actually had some damage around here.

When it comes to boxing day, its origins are obscured. Like @ooh456 joked at, my Swedish honey thought it was about boxing matches. At least @Puffin presented one of the more acceptable definitions.

My definition was a joke related to holiday stress. I think my definition was much more humorous than the one that @Grass came up with.

Though English and North American, or "American", have the same origin and are very similar, I view them as 2 separate languages. The rules, the use of the language and its pronunciation are diverging. In Iceland you can learn either American or English. In Sweden, contrary to what @waffen says, they will teach either American or English. @waffen is also wrong in that Canadian is indistinguishable from their U.S.A. cousin.

@Swinglish 1 -"..Do they use the word TOSSER in America."

Normally you have to specify WHERE you want HER - TOSSED. (Midget tossing is much more common.)

Just to clarify my answer-

She Offered her Honor,

He Honored her Offer,

and all night long,

it was Honor and Offer.

Some of you guys seem to take yourselves way too seriously.
