Malmö isn't to bad to live in if you know where to stay away from.
Don't go in to Rosengård especially at night, don't go in to industrial estates at night and generally stay away from any areas considered "problem areas"
I have been living in Malmö for 3 years now and have never really had any problems living in the city centre. Its no different from living in any english town/city to be honest.
Try finding a place around Folkets Park, Trianglen area they are not bad areas and on the whole we have little problems. *touch wood*
Though I won't deny we are looking at moving out of malmö as soon as we have the money to buy a place.
And there is usually always ticket checks on the trains between DK and SE, at least when I travel on it daily (morning and night). Though agreed about the policing, you sometimes get the Tull on board but they never seem to do much nor have the ability to do much however theres a side affect of being in Schlagen (I have no idea if i'm spelling it right).
There are nice places in side Malmö; near folkets park, västa hamnen, and a few other places like out towards St Benstorp that we would consider living in if it had a blasted trainstation or working busses.
It may be similar to certain areas of large cities, but even Liverpool has an ethnic European population of almost 95%, the only place remotely like Malmö would be the London Boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Newham, & Brent, & cities Leicester, Blackburn, Slough.
