Sweden's 'warmest December in 250 years'

Sweden is experiencing one of its warmest Decembers on record, according to meteorologists, as record high temperatures have spawned signs of spring in the middle of winter.

While the hurricane-strength winds of Christmas weekend's storms left many Swedes stranded and without power, that didn't stop the mercury from reaching new heights in several locations across the country.

In Delsbo in eastern Sweden, a high temperature of 10.3 degrees Celsius on December 27th smashed a 60-year-old record, according to meteorological agency SMHI.

And in Gävle, also in eastern Sweden, Tuesday's high temperature of 11.3 degrees marks the second warmest December temperature since measurements began in 1858.

Karlstad in central Sweden also set a new record of December warmth with a reading of 10.7 degrees on the 26th.

“It's unusually mild, almost warm, if you compare to the past,” Martin Hedberg, a meteorologist with Klart.se, told the Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) newspaper.

Stockholm has been three degrees above normal, but Norbotten [in northern Sweden] really stands out with seven to ten degrees above normal.”

Hedberd called December 2011 one of the ten warmest in Sweden in 250 years, leaving much of Sweden devoid of snow.

“We've had two proper winters, so many have been surprised at how mild it's been and the lack of snow,” he told SvD.

According to measurements from SMHI, December 2011 is the fourth warmest in Stockholm in 150 years, with the average monthly temperature coming in at 2.5 degrees.

Hedberg explained, however, that the last two cold and snowy Swedish winters are more the exception than the rule.

In the future, mild winters “will be increasingly” common, in part due to global warming, he said.

The warm temperatures have resulted in various sightings of signs of spring in various parts of Sweden.

In the south of Sweden, Chanterelle mushrooms were discovered recently by a Swedish girl out riding her horse, while others have reported seeing strawberries, blooming flowers, and budding trees.

The government and electrical company alliances must really be hating this. Most of what people pay to heat their homes is in the form of taxes so higher energy rates means more tax money. Bring on hotter temperatures please.

I'm very depressed at the lack of snow here. The whole reason i moved here is because i love the snow and ice, i even bought skis! Sweden's nice but very dull without snow.

@ james

You bought skis? I bought a snowplow. Everyday it sits in the driveway and I get to stare at it and wonder why I spent all that money!

Oh no! luckily my skis came from a second hand shop and only cost 40kr. I hope every winter isn't like this!

And to think I just bought new tires with spikes last month.

What a waste of money,

This could potentially be quite detrimental for some of the tree species in Southern Sweden if the temperatures begin to fall dramatically. If trees are starting to bud now in December and the temperatures drop again it could result in substantial reductions in growth for some of these trees.

On a less serious note, I also found it more depressing without the snow during the dark periods (November and December). I hope that there will be more snow in January.

After the past few winters (the last two which lasted almost 6 months and temperatures here in Stockholm dropping to -35) I am DELIGHTED to experience a mild winter for a change.

Remember that we were told no rain will fall again?

Up until early this year we were constantly reminded that we will live our lives burning in a fiery hot hell.

Yet time and again these prophets of doom were not just wrong they are found to be Cherry Picking the facts.

Statistical liars!

In Australia the laughable predictions included there would be NO SNOW by this year and that the people of the Maldives would drown as sea water rose yet they have just put in a new airport for the tourists.

While the feeble minded are panicked by Climate Change nee Global Warming the people at the IPCC are proven liars with Climate Gate 1 and now 2.

The people at the IPCC should be charged with obtaining money by fraudulent means.

What a shame that the truth and the case for keeping our planet clean was driven by liars and people with a financial interest.

Yes but hopefully we can see beyond the narrow self-interest of the oil corporations.
