Rise in shootings puts strain on Malmö police

Published: 2 Jan 12 07:11 CET | Print version

After the latest incident where a 15-year-old died from shot wounds to the head and chest on Sunday evening, police say that the situation in Malmö is “strained”.

“There were a lot of shootings during the latter part of 2011. It is a tough situation right now,” said Hans Nilsson of the Skåne county police to daily Svenska Dagbladet (SvD).

The 15-year-old was found shot half past midnight, in the midst of New Year’s revellers. Everything is pointing to him being gunned down in cold blood on an open street, while the bangs from the fireworks masked the sound of the gun.

“At first I thought he was drunk, but as I approached him I saw all the blood,” said the person who found him to daily Aftonbladet.

So far the police are flummoxed as to why the boy was targeted. He has no previous criminal record and is described by those in the neighbourhood as “an ordinary guy” who was into sports and very fond of his family.

“Everyone is talking about it and no one can understand. He was a funny and nice guy, he was full of jokes and almost always happy,” said a school friend to Aftonbladet.

So far no one has been brought in under suspicion of being behind the attack, although police have questioned many who were in the area at the time.

With two previous fatal shootings at the end of December to investigate, Malmö police describe the situation as “strained”.

On the day after Christmas, a man was shot dead while playing cards on club premises and just two days before that, a workman was shot while renovating a café in a central part of the city.

During 2011 there have been about 30 shootings and six gang related murders in Malmö, according to local paper Skånska Dagbladet.

The two last incidents in December has made the Swedish National Bureau of Investigation (Rikskriminalen) send some ten officers to aid the Malmö police in their investigations.

Hans Nilsson told SvD that a lot of weapons on the streets in combination with outdated weapons laws have contributed to the recent escalation of serious violence.

“There is quite a large number of incidents in Sweden related to organized crime and the legislation, which dates from the 1940s and 1950s, isn’t really up to date with the reality we are facing today,” he told the paper.

According to Nilsson, most other countries have more severe regulations on weapons than Sweden today.

They should really get their priorities straight in Sweden! Start by regulating immigration more tightly, then worry about firearms. If you keep the criminals out of the country, and immediately kick out those who embark upon a criminal career once here, then it doesn't matter anymore how many guns they have.
09:35 January 2, 2012 by Rey Stockholm
The police would ne under less strain if they did their job and handled criminals properly. Multiple shots to the head and they dont think it is murder. Even if they do catch him he will get out in à few years to commot crime again.

If this person is an immigrant he should be deported after the end of his sentence

Sweden has to act tougher or the chaos caused by these people will get worse and worse

I am afraid that I don't understand the weapons law issue. I thought certified training was required to possess a gun. I recall a guy that was arrested in Malmo about two years ago for having a baseball bat...
12:28 January 2, 2012 by ssola
From my point of view the unique problem is the possibility that the people can get access to weapons, must be practically impossible to get one without license (and this license must be very restrictive).
13:08 January 2, 2012 by Liquidmonkey
big surprise here.

most of the immigrants live in malmö.

and before any1 gets all discrimination on me, 80% of people in swedish prisons are IMMIGRANTS!!

our taxes should not be spent giving these people 3 meals a day! send them home!!
13:29 January 2, 2012 by Rey Stockholm
The key point missed in postings above is that this is nothing to do with how tight the swedsih firearms laws are. Tightenign the law makes no difference as has been shown in other countries.

These criminals are using illegally obtained weapons

You can bet the police will announce tigher laws which affects only law abiding licence holders - not the scum bags.

Recently a Swedish reporter took 5 hrs to purchase a gun on the black market to expose how easy it is and then his editor was charged with the crime, so Douglas, please save the political correctness for dinner time with your girlfriends parents. And everyone stop bashing immigrants! We don't need to live in your shadow. There are criminal elements in every society.
16:49 January 2, 2012 by Rey Stockholm
@ jack. À Young man is murdered in Cold blood on à busy street with an illegal gun and the comment is stop immigrant bashing !

Lets ignore all the stats and try and argue not really à problem

The people who commit these crimes can only exist in society because of liberal apologists

Why dont the police just get the nedia outlets to help out. 5hrs to get one gun off the streets thats 4 a day, and the pappers will still have 4hrs left to stuff up the weather forecast.

Problem solved

Get rid of your problem. Close the Border to non Sweden born. Problem solved. Guns cant but drugs. Gun Laws wont help!

"Close the Border to non Sweden born. Problem solved"

So who is going to drive your bus to work, clean your streets, clean your offices or do any of the work that some swedish people think is below them.

A country without imigration is a country without a future.

@caradoc

It's a myth that swedes are uninterested in some kinds of work.

Mass immigration of non europeans is a fairly new affair and we never had any problems filling positions neither before or after our politicians decided that Sweden should implement the most liberal migration laws in the western world.

Sweden also have and have had (since twenty years back) one of the most serious youth unemployment problems in europe which has led to a outflux of youth to Norway (100 000+) to do exactly the kind of jobs you for some reason say that swedes doesn't want to do.

It's quite racist and anti white of you to just assume that swedes are lazy and uninterested in whole segments of jobs.

I'm also very sceptical of your last statement. Depends on which kind of immigration and due to what reasons. It doesn't have to be positive just as it doesn't have to be negative (as it mostly is in Sweden).
19:50 January 3, 2012 by white_man
The problem is caused by the immigrants, the Swedish establishment who welcomed them in, and the electorate who votes the establishment into office.

Until Swedes confront this truth, the conversation is going nowhere.
20:56 January 3, 2012 by Chickybee
Thank God I don't live in Malmo.

It's so sad to see cities like this decline into what is so commonplace in the Middle East where all life is so cheap.
09:58 January 4, 2012 by caradoc
@KFF

It is my experience that of course not all swedes are disintrested in working and doing the menial jobs that usually fall to immigrants, but there is definitely a lack of enthusiasm from some swedish people. But it seems to me that a larger percentage of immigrants( and i count myself as one) try much harder to get work and then work harder in order to establish themselves here.

I do not see many swedish people working with their families in shops that are sometimes open 16 hrs a day (that we all use).

I do not see many swedish people cleaning the staircases of our homes and caring for the streets.

I do see many swedish people working in offices and government departments telling us how to run our lives and how to write CV's to submit to other government departments so they can justify their salarys.

I am not saying this is only a swedish problem. The same thing happens in the UK and i am sure in other countries as well.

As for the youth unemployment and the exodus of 100,000 to Norway, sometimes it seems to me the almost soviet style of control of the swedish society would be enough to scare away any self respecting teen.

On a purely statistical basis, the more firearms of any legality that are washing around, the greater the chance of them being used.

People with a grudge or criminal intent (or a mental illness leading to violence or obsession) will turn to the weapons of first resort which if firearms are common will be a gun, with fatal results.
