One man dead after new Malmö shooting

Yet another man has been gunned down on the streets of Malmö, making him the fifth in just over a month to be shot dead in Sweden's third largest city.

"It is a man in his fifties who has been shot outdoors. The perpetrator, or possibly perpetrators, fled the scene," said county police head Börje Sjöholm to news agency TT.

Police received a call about a shooting around noon on Tuesday, and upon arriving at the site could confirm that a man in his fifties had been killed.

The man has been identified, but is not previously known to the police.

Witnesses have claimed they saw one or more suspects running from the site, but no one is yet sure if more than one shot was fired.

The man lay on the pavement outside an apartment building on Kantatgatan, covered with a tarpaulin.

People from the area had soon gathered outside the cordoned off perimeters to find out what had happened, reported the TT news agency from the site.

"I just live around here. I came out to see who has been shot this time," one commented.

A woman, resident in the area, said she feels uneasy living there with her children.

"It's chaos, it scares me. I've felt for a long time that I've been wanting to move away from here for my children's sake," she told TT.

Police dogs have been searching the closed off area over the afternoon, and cars are being investigated, but no one has yet been arrested.

Malmö police are now appointing a special committee to combat the obvious rise in violent crimes in the region.

"This is an exceptional situation with this many violent crimes," said county police chief Eva Årestad during a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

The Malmö police has already requested support from the National Bureau of Investigation (Rikskriminalen) and will ask for more, she continued.

The police believe that one of the reasons behind the rise in violent crime in Malmö is the widespread use of and trade in illegal firearms.

The police are planning to up their presence on Malmö streets and are appealing to witnesses to come forward if they have something to tell.

"Sometimes we feel people know more than they want to say. We are utterly dependent on people contacting us if they have information," said Sjöholm.

Men in their fifties are usually beyond the drug dealing age, and this man was not known to police for any other crimes, so he may have been simply gunned down for theft, which is disturbing to say the least (unless he is some mafia boss who was not known to police).

Sweden has two legal categories of young offenders, one up to 18, and another between 18 and 21. The 18 to 21 group receive lighter sentences than older adults for murder, as illustrated in one case here last year, for 'murder, bordering on torture'. And the intermediate age category criminals pay smaller fines too, something like 50,000 SEK per murder, rather than 200,000 SEK for adults over 21 (which are all shamefully trivial fines in any case).

All this to say that there is very little disincentive compared to other nations for young adults to commit murder here, which may be one reason why Malmö now is seeing a murder rate of 60 corpses per year.

one day the murders wont be just between gangs and criminals, and then it will be too late.

i can forsee malmo being a place where people get shot in the face because they did not give away their mobile phone or 100 kr in their wallet.

Why even bother to read the news any longer, it only makes one loose hope for mankind even more. :(

Children killing children, men abusing and killing women, women killing as well. Even states commits murder.

Well the human won't live here forever so maybe thereafter the earth can become paradise - for some other species.

Police are looking for witness' and believe people are withholding valuable information. It says allot when the legal system does so little to ensure witness protection and results in people not coming forward.

a very sorry and disturbing state of affairs in Malmö. the police can not do it alone. civil society must rise up to the challenge of being their neighbor's keeper. take interest in the kids around you and be a positive influence. take interest in what your neighbor does and volunteer information to the police if you suspect anything fishy. i do know being a snitch is not cool in some cultures but in other to have a sane and civil society devoid of fear, we must rise up to the challenge of weeding out crooks - kingpins and criminals.

As third world infuences are felt more and more on the streets of Sweden it is safe to assume given ample evidence that life in Sweden will reflect these influences more and more. The dynamics of the country going forward are being changed by these infuences, the police justifiably are in the process of reviewing the situation completely with regards future policing in Malmo.

I wonder are all, who have been shot to death are immigrants. May be there is another "Laser Man" around.

If most of these five persons didn't have criminal backgrounds and their age differences are very high (as far as I know one was fifteen, and this person in the article is fifty!), then may be the motivation is not what mostly thinks about gangs fighting or some other kind of crimes.

It's not unusual in Sweden to find people like " Laser Man", it has happened in Malmö before (and Stockholm).

If one person were commiting these shootings the clever police would be able to establish this using ballistics. So far the police have not found anything to suspect this.

Who says it's a Muslim? If it's some kind of mafia killing the perpetrator's more likely to be Eastern European (or perhaps even a native Swede). If it's simply theft the main determining factor is usually poverty rather than ethnicity/religion.

Poverty of morals and human decency, and ungratefulness would be the only poverty here. In kind, forgiving and generous Sweden where welfare and work are plentiful nobody can have the excuse of financial poverty for commiting a criminal act.

What's new here? Mamo lways being a can of worms but ignored and denied by the govement, now it is time to take the head out o the hole nd pay for the conequences and accept that not veryting is peaches nd flowes in thepeacefull calm paradise. as long a it is crinals killing criminas go for that!!! Ltet hem reduce the group, but when inocent peple are affected i it is time to act asap

This morning the TV4 news presenter asked their on-scene reporter why there were so many guns on the streets of Malmö. The answer: poverty and segregation. That's really funny! As recently as 50 years ago, Malmö's working class was a lot poorer and just as segregated, yet they did not roam the streets heavily armed.

Here's some entirely free advice to the "poor and segregated":

1. Learn Swedish

2. Move to where the jobs are.

3. Get one (a job, not a gun).

Presto! Desegregation and povertiy alleviation all in one!

5 persons are dead yes, it is sad. In my homland, more than 5 die every minute on the streets so this is a place safe to live for me and my family. Swedish people sound very spoiled....

I met a swedish woman who was adopted when she had couple of month from India by a swedish couple. She was raised as a swed, she is a christian, speakes only swedish. She was visibly bothered by the fact that I thougt she was a imigrant. A smart woman who has a shity job at a supermarket because her colour didn't allow her to have a better one. At least 5 time per year she is the subject of major racist incidents.

I ask all the Sverigedemokraterna supporters: Has she the right to be frustrated or she should be grateful for her "wonderfull" life

Well that does not happen even in multi-ethnic multi-cultural "Londonistan" (as the right-wing xenophobes have it), so I would not think it's on its way to Malmö any time soon.

On the other hand, if levels of petty crime do increase, it might be a good idea to have Swedish 'beat' officers go on secondment to some of the British urban police forces that are seen in some of the "police-camera" TV programmes, where they have a robust but respectful approach.

These crimes are a gift of 'enlightened' Swedish politicians, academics, and journalists to the Swedish people. Too bad it's not those responsible for adding this diversity to the culture who suffer the consequences of their foolishness.

But hey, at least they can claim that Malmö isn't boring anymore!

KungsholmenGuy, do you have a source for the 60 murders per year? I am not questioning it, but it really blew my mind.

If that is accurate, Malmo, a city of 300,000 has a per capita murder rate just shy of 30% higher than that of Chicago. A city of several million notorious for being very violent. I know murder rate is per capita, but it seems that big cities tend to have higher rates than small.

To have such a small Scandinavian city have such a high rate is crazy. Especially considering the overly peaceful connotations associated with Scandinavia.

I am simply projecting based on the recent murder rate (5 in just over a month) x 12 months = 60 per year, if this kees up (which, hopefully, will not be the case).

Thankfully there is talk that the politicians will raise the jail time for illegal possession from 6 months to a year. This will not deter criminals, but the 1 year prison term makes the illegal possession crime 'serious' enough that police will be allowed to use phone and internet tapping to help track criminals, which should help reduce the body count.

I personally would love to see the politicians go even further in a sort of healthy 'over reaction' to this situation, by banning all gun possession within cities except for guns that stay locked up within gun clubs and hunting clubs. Only in Europe is this sort of idealism possible, but only barely so.

I would much rather walk out onto city streets here that are filled with criminals armed with butter knives than AK-47's.

Some idiot criminologist is suggesting that the high crime rate in Malmø is caused by the fact that its located just next to Copenhagen.

The murder rate in Copenhagen is some what lower than in Malmø. No mention is made of the extreme demographic change of Malmø in recent years.

So the multicultural lies continue.

Hello everyone,

May I just say that stating that 80% of prisoners are immigrants, does not necessarily prove that immigrants break the law more frequently than Swedes- Is it possible, even remotely so, that immigrants are being targetted by the police, simply for being immigrants?. I believe in law and order, but I also believe in justice for all.

This might shock some readers, but I do believe that breaking the laws of the host country habitually should result in deporting the individual in question.

Some of the immigrants in Sweden are victims , simply for being in Sweden, why do I say this ?, Sweden is a highly developed country with a well educated population, to place a poor uneducated Somali in Sweden is in my opinion an act of cruilty because he has no skills to equip him to compete for jobs etc, it would be kinder to repatriate such immigrants and help them in their own countries. Sweden is a great country and the Swedes are a great tolerant people .

By the way, I am a Muslim, I live in the Uk and I am also a big fan of Sweden and it's people !.

Yes, Swedish people are very kind, tolerant, forgiving and generous. Ingratitude in the form of persistent crime from immigrants should for everyone's sake result in repatriation. It would be a valuable tool in the form of a deterrent, and also remove a source of bad report from making things difficult for the honest and worthy immigrant.

You have to ask yourself why are there so many shootings in Malmo. Lets assume it is not a serial killer (unless the clever police are not quite so clever to work it out after five murders) then why is it happening. This is most likely then the work of criminal gangs fighting turf wars to control drugs, prostitution, racketeering and all the other money making efforts that take no real effort to profit from. Big money for little or no effort with little risk to the big guys. A hit costs a few hundred euro. The little guys do it and Mr Big sits back and creams it. Make no mistake about it, they are not killing for buttons this is very big business with millions at stake. They will kill a lot more to get control of this lucrative business. Democratic countries like Sweden are completely vulnerable to this type of criminal behaviour and it will impact all your lives here. How to control it - pass whatever Draconian laws required to deal with it. You must give up some 'rights' to fight this war. It is a war though most people dont even realise one has been declared on them. Wake up Europe, rise up Europe and resist this madness or it will destroy everything you hold dear. The freedoms and rights you cherish can only exist when the vast majority accept their responsibilities as citizens. When a relatively small group organise to undermine the democratic system yet claim the rights of the same system to defend their activities the weakness that is inherent in democracies become very glaringly exposed. The rights that right thinking people worked so hard for are being twisted and abused by those who care nothing for the people who fought for these rights.

I grew up in this City. I know the street where the poor guy got shoot. Am I surprised, no! The deterioration of Malmo started long time ago. It began when Rosengard was built and the politician decided not to care about educating people who lived there swedes included. On top of that, the Malmo PD is extremely ineffective and need a complete overhaul. They cannot do it without the support from the local government but Reepalu has no clue. He does not know what to do. It's sad but it will take a long time before it will get better.

Never clear to me why democracies are so unwilling to send in their armies.

Rather than having thousands of Sweden's infantrymen freezing in barracks all winter, why not deploy them on Malmo's streets, in plain clothes and with concealed weapons if need be. No mandate to hand out parking tickets, but to attempt to prevent the serious stuff. Call it domestic peace keeping.

I attended a Russian evening show in St-P in 2002 only a few months after the Chechnian hostage incident in Moscow, and half the theatre that I was in was filled with soldiers in their military outfits. I felt a lot safer with their presence.
