Malmö dwellers forced to deliver their own mail

As postal workers assigned to the Malmö district of Seved feel too threatened to carry out their duties, the residents themselves will now have to deliver their own post.

”You do what you have to do, we have to solve it somehow. And we have no idea how it will work before we have tried, that's how I look at it,” Swedish Postal Service (Posten) district manager Rolf Weiffert to local paper Skånska Dagbladet.

For months, Seved has been plagued by continuing problems.

Threatened postal workers in the area were forced to carry panic alarms and many residents say they don't dare go out at night.

From February 1st, two residents in the area will help authorities deliver mail to some 500 households in the area.

The Posten and Malmö city will be co-operating on the project, which will begin as a 6 month trial project and focus on getting young people engaged in postal delivery, according to the newspaper.

"I'm satisfied," Anders Malmquist, district manager with the city of Malmö, said.

“Young adults get an insight and an understanding of how it is to work in the postal service."

The two young people who will deliver the letters are currently being recruited.

They will be employed for 12 months by Jobb Malmö, a community project, and get introductory education by the postal system, followed by an internship and, the plan is, eventual employment as a postal worker.

The municipality sees the venture mostly as a workforce project to steer the unemployed youth into work life, even if the idea itself stems from criminality and the lack of safety that has come to characterize the area.

The postal service denied that there was a need for new postal worker recruitment, but stated that the there was a danger of the postal service coming to a halt.

Since the police beefed up camera surveillance of the area in December, the number of incidents has decreased, but the district, which has 4,500 residents, has always had considerable social problems.

Half of the population is between 19 and 44 with a majority of foreigners.

Less than half of the adults have paid employment and the average income is low.

Youth gangs have taken over parts of the town and are engaged in more or less open drug trafficking.

In October, one postal vehicle was also subjected to an attempted robbery.

What is happening to Sweden?

Every time I come back to Sweden (which I do regularly) as I have family in Lund and Helsingborg, I can see that the old way of life is just simply being eroded by pathological and destructive behaviour - of course Swedes are not completely innocent.

But the kind of atmosphere one feels now is definately not the kind, I, as a 33-year-old man, remember. Malmo really resembles Baghdad sometimes with no-go areas that Swedes never had before.

Maybe I am lucky to be living abroad now.
18:14 January 13, 2012 by Achilles7
Sigh... Another article about crime in Malmö... Anything to do with immigrants by any chance?
18:33 January 13, 2012 by akhokhay
@ Achilles7

I am totally agree with you.

But have you ever see other hand?

let me give a mind blowing example.

My friend (she) came as asylum seeker. She has been sent to a camp.

At first she got 5000 Kr per month. they reject her case and salary reduced.

it is now around 3000 or something. Meanwhile she learnt Swedish and find a job as babysitter. Guess what, migrationverket told her you are not allowed to work.

They say we will pay you money but you don't work. seems logic?

Logical is they cut her social money and ask her to work.....

Now when you don't have money what will you do? Money should always flow through the society. if you ban her from working, she will get black job or in worse case Underground job as sex seller or if she was boy maybe gang/thief?
19:01 January 13, 2012 by mafketis
Why does the headline make Malmo seem like victims of an unfair policy. Shouldn't the headline be:

"Immigrants create dangerous neighborhood where Swedish government cannot function"?
19:02 January 13, 2012 by canuk
logic is throwing the now illegal person who is illegally trying to work in sweden into the middle of the öresund. Its not racist if its true you dog(tom)....
19:20 January 13, 2012 by dogtom
canuk... what a charming person you are. You think asylum seekers should be drowned....
19:27 January 13, 2012 by riose
@akhokhay That is the trick, she is an asylum seeker, not an immigrant. If you emigrate as immigrant, you get permission to work. If you go as asylum seeker, you get asylum.
20:21 January 13, 2012 by bramblebush
Why are these asylum seekers and immigrants allowed in? Deport and turn off the "vacancy sign" and the problem will correct itself.
20:52 January 13, 2012 by jackityjack
As very often there seems to be confusion between what defines an 'migrant' and a 'refugee'.

Refugees, by definition, are forced to flee from there homes in order to save their lives. Because of war or persecution if they stay home there is a high chance they will be killed. Did you know that 80% of the worlds refugees rare taken in by developing countries such as Pakistan and India, Tanzania and Kenya? Most refugees want nothing more than to return home when it is safe to do so. The resettlement space offered by the rich countries who are most able to re-house refugees is inadequate and these poorer nations put us all to shame with their hospitality.

A migrant, on the other hand, has an easier choice. They move legally to another country, usually for economic benefit where they are allowed to work legally. Migrant labour underpins many rich world economies. What would the economy of USA be without Mexican labour? It would fall apart as there would be no one to do the jobs first world citizens see as beneath them.

And just be aware that refugees bring a lot more to their host countries than trouble and a begging bowl. Einstein was a refugee. Marlene Dietrich another. The founder of Marks and Spencer yet another.

@roise

Who cares WHY she is here?

As long as she is productive for society, her presence would be useful. or at least better than social money taker. In my point of view it doesn't matter how or by what name they come in, but it is important to be productive.

Am I wrong?

in your point of view, asylum seekers should stick in their camps, do nothing and take money?
23:04 January 13, 2012 by Keith #5083
what are her qualifications for a job as a babysitter? Has she had 'approved' training?

I like to believe the best of people, but I am not so naive as to think that there aren't many 'so-called jobs' that are simply methodologies for 'bending' the system.

Interesting they 'reject her case'. Interesting also that she was paid 5000 then down to 3000, plus I presume a place to live. I really don't think it fair for immigrants/asylum seekers to complain about the standard of support from Swedish taxpayers.

Equally, the rants and raves of bigoted and/or prejudiced individuals are just as misplaced.

Interesting, also, that a 'beefed up' surveillance/police presence - in a known troubled area - has had effect in decreasing the problems.
23:17 January 13, 2012 by akhokhay
@Keith

That is what exactly I want to say" I really don't think it fair for immigrants/asylum seekers to complain about the standard of support from Swedish taxpayers."

She is not complaining about the money social gave her. What I think is stupid is the government bans her from working. You can think she has qualification for baby sitter or can gain it in 6 months (or whatever the course lasts).

To be honest I hate seeing ppl not working and taking social money, but what I hate more is they want to work and they can't :) Com'on it is not logical in anyway, it is plain stupidity.

even with low income they still live better than in their own contries.

fking ignorant people really.

Ive known people who earned way less than anyone would ever earn in sweden but would return a bag of money if they found it.

Swedish media should stop with the sugarcoating and not put all immigrants in the same sack.

there are hardworking immigrants , and then there are immigrants who are worthless pieces of crap who wont addapt or integrate or assimilate. and we all know who they are,

Yes they are the worthless pieces of crap who didnt addapt or they are the second generation raised between two cultures that completely oppose eachother.

If swedish police doesnt crack down on this now then it will be just like in Rio de janeiro and it will take 40 years and the army to clear out , because just like the drug traffickers in rio they will gain power and influence.

Time to send the Swedish army on an assignment Secure Malmö, get rid of the criminal activity and all (illegal) guns.

Racist/Xenophobic 'Swedes' are really not the sharpest knives in the drawer...

They invaded, stole, and continue to actively steal to the present day, land from the Sami people to then lecture others about 'land rights', or who's indigenous or not?

We are one world, deal with it! Just because your grandparents/parents oppressed and sterilized Sami women up to the 70's doesn't make any of you the lords and owners of anything... people will always look for a better life for themselves, one day the same might be valid for you, being born on a territory doesn't make you its proprietary... its only the result of your parents having had sex and given birth there... that does not entitle you to anything, except being a spoiled racist prick...

Freakin racists keeping the world and mentalities from evolving and finding progressive solutions to problems existing since the beginning of man...
11:01 January 14, 2012 by Borilla
Why complain about immigrants and asylum seekers? They are simply a product of the system. The real culprits are the police (the village police) who are both inadequate and ill-trained and the politicians who have created a system that prevents those few police who try to do their job from succeeding. This is the country where a convicted felon with a weapon receives a lighter sentence (because the weapon is part of his necessary work equipment) than a working man involved in an accidental injury. What do you expect when the laws and judiciary are completely out of touch with reality.
11:13 January 14, 2012 by Miss Kitten
And yet, residents of the roughest, most crime-infested neighborboods in America and elsewhere manage to get their mail.
11:28 January 14, 2012 by blursd
Funny ... even in Watts, Compton and Southcentral Los Angeles the Postal Service operates without any difficulty or harassment.
13:24 January 14, 2012 by Reason abd Realism
@Borilla

Disagree that the police are the main problem (their work is difficult and dangerous, because they deal daily with the violent scum of society, and with so-called young offenders between 15 and 21 who are impossible to lock up), but fully agree that a spineless judicial system is a main part of the problem.

No amount of good police work is of any help if the judge gives the criminal a hug and sends him right back out onto the streets, thanks to the categorically idiotic sentencing here in Sweden. Hire a judge from England and put him in charge for awhile, and the violent criminals, even the younger criminals, will start to think twice.

@ Asylum vs Immigration

In my view we should empower those who are eager to work with a chance to do some work, particularly in cases where local residents are unwilling to do the work or are insufficient in number (unless there is no such category of employment anywhere in the country....).

Swedes are good at record keeping, so could keep track of the revenue and tax that person, even if it is understood that the asylum seeker's case is under review, or if their permit to stay only applies for 6 months before they must return, etc...
16:03 January 14, 2012 by Beavis
pathetic - these postal workers need to be sent for a week to a genuine "problem area" in any big city and see quite how lame the levels of crime are in Malmö.In most cities these "danger areas" in Malmö are the average areas and not the dangerous ones. Dont want to deliver mail, fire them, as stated there is plent of people in these areas that could do the job. This lot at posten are a right lazy shower, they wont even walk up a flight of stairs and the post box has to be the right height for them.

Have any postal workers actually been attacked that they have genuine cause for concern- no.
16:20 January 14, 2012 by Svensksmith
@ blursd and miss kitten

I've heard that it is an unwritten rule not to mess with the postal delivery people in the hood. They deliver the welfare checks.
16:44 January 14, 2012 by tgolan
pathetic, that these criminals are allowed to harass the post, The justice minister the Mayor and the police chief all need to Go . this is a scandal
19:05 January 14, 2012 by nar klockan klamtar
This is a symptom of a potential Ghetto Malmo. Civilised and structured society breaking down on trend to third world conditions. The trend will continue to manifest itself unless drastic action is taken to root out the criminals who now appear to be destroying all quality of life in the city .
08:44 January 15, 2012 by expatjourno
These immigrants and asylum seekers have been brought in to break the welfare system. It's a twofer: 1) They are overloading it and making it too expensive and 2) they are undermining political support for tit because people are willing to pay to support people who are like them, but not willing to pay to support foreigners.

The end-game is lower taxes for the rich and cheaper labor.
17:32 January 15, 2012 by AW_S
this is sad. How is safety situation in other Swedish cities? Similar?
02:27 January 16, 2012 by No Haram Done
Beloved Sverige, it's been a YEAR since I wrote this:

"It's NOT January, 2011, but January, 1939!

ONE YEAR LATER, we in "the West' are witnessing the "phony war" our parents/grandparents ALSO witnessed after the opening of WWII (& its LOW-KEY violence between States!), only NOW, it's between the stateless "State" called 'The Ummah" (Islam's peoples in foreign lands, or, the "Dar al-Harb" - 'Land of War') & the IMPOTENT gov'ts that are ENABLING it to RUN ROUGHSHOD over their populations!

Yes, it's NOT January, 2012, but January, 1940!

WE ARE AT WAR!
10:26 January 16, 2012 by flintis
Amazing how we get asylum seekers from Iraq & Afghanistan & they are not allowed to be deported back there.

Yet they & other immigrants quite often go there on holiday, example 5 yrs old Swedish boy killed in suicide bomb attack, was there visiting his mother???? Where is the logic???
17:30 January 16, 2012 by SockRayBlue
Don't be so harsh people. They just wanted to bring a little bit of their homeland with them. The solution is to deport the trouble makers.
01:18 January 18, 2012 by biddi
chickybee : 'what is happening to Sweden?' I would put that in the past tense. We left Sweden BECAUSE it no longer resembles the beautiful Sweden it once was (and I'm not talking about the country-side). Det är för sent, farväl Sverige!

PS : read a car sign the other day "F*** OFF! WE'RE FULL!

@miss kitty

There seems to almost be an unwritten truce between the post office and street gangs (and it's not over welfare checks as those are all on debt cards).

People would call for pizza deliveries to rob and shoot the driver, ice cream trucks, even fake ambulance calls so they could rob the paramedics (now depending on the neighborhood, paramedics get police protection).

Here's a summer headline from Chicago, IL, USA;

"At least 40 shot across city over weekend"

And that doesn't count shootings in the suburbs. While crime is mobile, for the most part, it's concentrated in horrifically run down areas with occasional crimes outside of those zones (and those are the crimes we all seem to get upset about). We have a few drive in funeral parlors for wakes (one of my coworkers son's was killed and I went inside, but the place had a drive thru - TV monitors for viewing).

Anyway, I'm glad its winter as - temps lower crime a bit, but warmer temps, especially in spring for some reason, cause it to surge.

From the outside, I don't know if there are a large quantity of homicides in Malmö and this site just carries info on a few (which is the Chicago newspaper way) or if this is a total count (in which case it's not too bad from a rest of the world point of view).

Everybody says there is this RACE problem. Everybody says this RACE problem will be solved when the third world pours into EVERY white country and ONLY into white countries.

The Netherlands and Belgium are more crowded than Japan or Taiwan, but nobody says Japan or Taiwan will solve this RACE problem by bringing in millions of third worlders and quote assimilating unquote with them.

Everybody says the final solution to this RACE problem is for EVERY white country and ONLY white countries to "assimilate," i.e., intermarry, with all those non-whites.

What if I said there was this RACE problem and this RACE problem would be solved only if hundreds of millions of non-blacks were brought into EVERY black country and ONLY into black countries?

How long would it take anyone to realize I'm not talking about a RACE problem. I am talking about the final solution to the BLACK problem?

And how long would it take any sane black man to notice this and what kind of psycho black man wouldn't object to this?

But if I tell that obvious truth about the ongoing program of genocide against my race, the white race, Liberals and respectable conservatives agree that I am a naziwhowantstokillsixmillionjews.

They say they are anti-racist. What they are is anti-white.

Anti-racist is a code word for anti-white.
