Protesters question Carl Bildt as foreign minister

Published: 15 Jan 12 12:23 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/38512/20120115/

Demonstrations were held in several Swedish cities on Saturday to protest against Sweden's foreign minister Carl Bildt, questioning his suitability for the role.

"We're protesting in order to highlight Carl Bildt's actions, and question his role as foreign minister. We want to enlighten the public about what has occurred, and show that there are many of us who care," said the protest's organiser Damon Rasti in a statement.

According to the Metro newspaper, this may be the first time Sweden has seen protests directed against a single minister.

The protests were held in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, Helsingborg and Borås, gathering some 500 people, according to news agency TT.

Carl Bildt's role as former board member of oil company Lundin Oil is a main point of concern for many protesters.

"The fact that Sweden's foreign minister has been on the board of a company that is now being probed for crimes against humanity damages Sweden's reputation globally, and needs to be taken more seriously by the government and by Swedish media," said Rasti in the statement.

According to Carl Bildt's press secretary, however, protesters were misled.

"We are aware that the demonstrations will occur," said press secretary Anna Charlotta Johansson to newspaper Metro on Friday.

"However, they seem to be largely based on misinterpretation and incorrect information, for instance in the way we are working to get the two Swedish journalists in Ethiopia free," she said.

This is a good start.

Demonstrations against Rheinfelt and Borg would also be good.

Its not just him they should do a background check on so many politicians , what connections they have before they come to power!!! What the secret service are doing, working only for their protection? what about if a politician gets paid by coperates to pass a bill that benefits them and not the public! afcourse they would serve their masters and not the public. Why they are not passing a bill in which the public can see all the donations to political parties come from? the answer is crystal clear!

A country cannot be steered by balls otherwise Iran, Israel, etc were the best countries to live on!

Actually women would be better leaders than the back slapping idiots that Sweden has at present.

You may find it hard to believe, but women are just as capable as men at leading and quite often more capable.

Ever hear of Boudica, Queen Medb, Queen Victoria, etc?
15:54 January 15, 2012 by byke
@ Nemesis.

Sexual hatred and insecurity has no place in politics.

Boudica : Medallion wearing Ginge, hanging out in London (glorified chav? ... RICKY!)

Queen Medb : mythological BS (And Irish to boot LOL)

Queen Victoria : Heavy drugs user

Yeah their really great examples / NOT

On a plus side (according to your own statements) you have Beatrice Ask in Sweden, Sarah Pahlin in the US .... yeah choosing women based on their sexual distinction is really smart

The two Journalist are innocents and wanted to retrieve hiden facts from the isolated Ogaden region of ethiopia. However, Swedish company explore oil and minerals in the same province therefore the interest of the company outweigh that of the journalists, that is why the Swedish government kept quite untill the last minute. Moreover, the journalist have enough support from the international community and wellwishers for now but the Ogaden province and it's people remained suffering and cry silently for long period of time. I urge the contributors of this local news and readers to make attempts in knowing and assisting the desperate IDPs/EDPS from the Ogaden province.

Protesters should be listened by the government and intervene the burning matters which need immediate resolution. i extend my regards to the local news in English, contributors and readers.

What a meaningless demonstration as none of the protesters are effected by Swedish foreign policy.

More sobering was the fact that thousands of people held rallies all over the world yesterday to try and save the demise of SAAB. I too participated, and there is no mention in The Local.

Because of some ministerial apathy, some 14,000 people in Western Sweden (the trickle down effect)are facing long-term unemployment. This did not have to happen if the Government had not put so many stumbling blocks in the way. Now the Treasury will be pouring out millions in unemployment benefits, when good paying jobs could contribute taxes. Unlike the US that has a massive deficit, Sweden actually has a surplus that could be used to help the restructure of SAAB untill they get back on their feet.

"Sweden's foreign minister has been on the board of a company that is now being probed for crimes against humanity..."

ACCORDING TO WHO? COMMUNIST REPORTER MARTIN SCHIBBEY...who was caught with armed Somali terrorists crossing border into Ethiopia.

Mr. Schibbey used to be the editor for the magazine "Rebell", the official paper of "RKU", Sweden's Revolutionary Communist Party's youth organisation. Communism á la Marxism Leninism.

Mr. Schibbey and his comrades declared that Sweden only can be reformed by revolution, armed revolution if necessary, and that Stalin's murderous campaigns, terrors equalling Hitler's, were mere fabrications of the ruling class and thus untrue.

As for the concept of democracy, Mr. Schibbey and "RKU" proclaimed that the dictatorship of the proletariat is the ultimate form of democracy.

Obviously Mr. Schibbey deserves a fair trial; nonetheless it seems ironic that Mr. Schibbey now is on the receiving end of a totalitarian Marxist Leninist state's legal system.

Carl Bildt's role as former board member of oil company Lundin Oil is a main point of concern for many protesters.

Is this Sweden's version of Occupy Wall Street? It is pitiful. Sweden has someone with real world experience so it appears they need to get rid of him because some radicals make unsubstantiated allegations about something that took place in a third world hell hole..
19:24 January 15, 2012 by anonymous4
Carbarrister,

Who knows the motive for sure? I'd say it would be wise to keep a watch on the USA's proposed SOPA and PIPA Acts. Does the USA have a right to police the internet worldwide?
19:53 January 15, 2012 by tedd09y
@ carbarrister "about something that took place in the third world hole" for ur information that third world hell whole is the place for ur savage multi billion dollar companies eagerly digging for oil and natural resources...but yaaa u know about human rights and bla bla ...u r just one of those ignorant and are just short sighted westernee idiots who do not have any concrete information about that specific place.

I am sure in Sweden is there an school of foreign affairs, open to well qualified lawyers, economists, historians and sociologist. Why then choose an amateur as Bildt for the work of Ministery of Foreign Affairs?. I believed that occurs in underdeveloped countries only. It is a shame for such a serios people as the swedes

@ byke,

So you consider women to be inferior.

I assume you want to live in a world only populated by hot sweaty men.

Your mysogny is noted.

Tusen takk to the protesters!!!! Bravo and well done, good citizens!!!

Here in Amerika, they prepare once again for another resource-extraction war, this time with Iran.

The phony Wall Street-sponsored presidential elections will give us either Romney of Wall Street (the private bankster) or Obama of Wall Street (he who appoints the private banksters and Wall Street lobbyists to his administration).

Seriously, Sweden is becoming more and more like the USA every day --- something to be guarded against!

"The fact that Sweden's foreign minister has been on the board of a company that is now being probed for crimes against humanity damages Sweden's reputation globally,..."

That's just not good enough. If Mr Bildt, or Lundin Oil have broken the law, then they must be prosecuted and punished. But so far, after intensive investigations by journalists who even searched the mountains of Ethiopia, there remains nothing but suspicion and probes. It's way past time for these people to either prove it, or go away.
09:54 January 16, 2012 by flintis
The two journalist are guilty of illegally entering a country, & should have been deported. Blame the Swedish Tax authority who have stopped ex-pats from paying "taxes" to the counrty in question.

@byke & Nemesis: Queen Victoria was head of State she did NOT govern the country, that privilege was left to her Prime Minister all of them men.

Middle East Dictators' (and beyond) Swedish protector ( CARL BILDT ).

Dictators feel uncomfortable if ( CARL BILDT ) gets in trouble.

Dictators based upon ( CARL BILDT ) protection and the other western authorities' like him support dare to execute and suppress their own people with brutality.

They steal the wealth of the country to put in their pockets and in their protectors' pockets.

By so provided poverty, people for the basic needs of daily life have to sell their bodies' organs the same as kidneys, eyes etc for being able to live for a while; thanks to MISTER Carl Bildt and friends heartlessness, unfortunately!
15:58 January 16, 2012 by SimonDMontfort
@Robin Hood - I agree with much of what you say but you have to admit Mr Bildt should perhaps be more careful in his choice of associates. Lol!

Carl Bildt has been on Lundin's board of directors for around 12 years now. There were claims(backed up by UN & Canadian govt reports) that the company's activities in the Sudan made the war there even worse. Then the 2010 'Unpaid Debt' report suggested Lundin MAY have been complicit in 'war crimes and crimes against humanity' (which they deny)

Not enough perhaps yet, to prove criminal responsibility, but I wonder how much 'drip drip' of bad publicity will be needed to leave Mr Bildt with a bad political 'smell'?

Carl Bildt, an Arabist shill, will long be remembered as the genius who, because he apparently was an eyewitness and because he is also an expert on medical surgery procedures, backed up the story of the Swedish "journalist", Donald Something-or-Other, that the Israeli army was murdering Arabs and "harvesting" their organs" - a medieval blood libel in itself and a medical procedure proven to be impossible to carry out on a battlefield. However far his corruption extends is only one issue - but bad judgment and deep-seated antisemitism completes the picture of this man.
