Sweden 'not ready' to recognize Palestine: Bildt

Published: 17 Jan 12 08:04 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/38542/20120117/

The time is not right for Sweden to recognize the Palestinian state or make any promises to upgrade the country’s status in the UN, said foreign minister Carl Bildt on Monday after the Centre Party recently made a u-turn on the issue.

“Of course we would like to, but the main aim right now is to stimulate the two parties to a dialogue. That’s what we are supporting,” Bildt said at a press conference with his Finnish colleague Erkki Tuomija on Monday.

Both Bildt and Tuomija said that the EU had tried to dissuade the Palestinians and their president Mahmoud Abbas from seeking membership in the UN.

But Abbas went ahead anyway and now the application is being processed in the Security Council.

“This is not what we advised them to do. When and how it will be settled in the Security Council, we don’t know,” said Bildt.

“Both of us, in fact everyone in the EU, advised them not to go the council. We couldn’t see that it would lead anywhere. And it hasn’t," said Tuomija.

Tuomija said that he shared Bildt’s lack of enthusiasm about what the upcoming peace talks might engender.

“But without peace talks there can be no peace. A complete Palestinian state is not possible without the end of occupation,” Bildt said.

It is not known when the government will look at the Palestine question again. According to Bildt, the time will be right when there is a Palestinian state to recognize.

“I hope that will happen as soon as possible,” said Bildt.

However, he added that for Sweden to recognize a state, the country in question needs to fulfill a certain fundamental criteria. And that is not the case yet, according to Bildt.

The Centre party, which has recently made a u-turn over the Palestine question, argues that the government and Sweden should recognize it as a state, and that the criteria are fulfilled as far as can be expected considering the conflict in the area.

Israel was recognized 63 years ago without any talks or "Dialogue". What´s so different now? Please don´t tell me that times are changing because that´s a silly answer.
10:54 January 17, 2012 by Iraniboy
If recognition of a one side is an obstacle to the peace process according to Bildt then Sweden should cancel the recognition of Israel! This argument is silly! You can only help a peace with two sides if you treat both of them equally!

As for Sweden it seems that only one party is not supporting the process yet the entire Sweden should accept that!

Yeah right, the vast majority of Sweden is with Palestinia, however since the bussines and government are so dependent of USA they have fear to stand in one side... Very first world of... sissys

That is exactly what expected of sweden.
12:49 January 17, 2012 by omansour
first things first...all European countries are puppets of the US..therefore no country would dare to recognize Palestine except it gets an ok from the US administration. This, however, doesn't make Sweden bad. It is a generous country when it comes to Palestina (which again goes back to global US-dominant politics).

this is pure puppet talk i wish Palme were alive then things would be very different. This clearly shows how weak Sweden is. Shame. Somebody far away pulls the strings and Sweden dances to the tune.

To sukacock,

Israel has agreed to a two state solution, and are willing to negotiate.

"Hamas' Prime Minister in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, reiterated on Saturday that his organization will never recognize Israel and will never give up on Jerusalem, Channel 10 News reported.

"Hamas accepts 1967 borders, but will never recognize Israel, top official says"

Speaking to Palestinian news agency Ma'an, Mahmoud Zahar says recognition of Israel would deprive future Palestinian generations of the possibility to 'liberate' their lands.

"Hamas leader says group will never recognize Israel"

"We said it five years ago and we say it now ... we will never, we will never, we will never recognize Israel," Haniyeh told the gathering which some organizers said was attended by around 250,000 people.

Bilt is reflecting world opinion, and is trying to encourage a more constructive dialogue. Recognitian of Palestine as a state would be when by its actions it is seen to have attained credibility to actually be a state, behaving responsibly and becoming a constructive factor to begin genuine negotiations. Cease firing rockets into Israel, renounce violence, and recognise Israel in the same way that the rest of the civilised world has recognised Israel. A little gratitude goes a long way, and it is worth remembering that If it were not for the incredibly generous US and EU aid, the people of Palestine would now be enduring famine and plague conditions.

It seems that US and European union have hiden agenda over the recognition of Pasestine because the recognition of Palestine could bring long lasting resolutions between Israel and Palestine states.

However, Israel has strong power and involvement in europe and US and influence leaders and decision makers with their ideology of depriving rights of Palestine. One of the misconceptions is that Palestinians are all Muslims but they have mixed faiths (christians/Muslims) and all of them are partriotics.

They jointly struggle and demand to get their deprived rights in order to be independant state. So let us support Palestine with recognition representing our state or convince our current government to accept.
20:29 January 17, 2012 by guliver
On 29.11.47 the UN with resolution 181 which was accepted after an international debate and vote in the UN decided on the partition of Palestine in 2 states: a Jewish one and an Arab -Palestinian one, the arabs never accepted that resolution, rejected the recognition of the Jewish state and conduced repeated wars during the last 64 years in order to destroy it,

Just with Oslo agreement Arafat and Rabin agreed again to 2 states solution ,but still Arafat left Camp David although Israel with Barak offered an withdrown from most parts of the West Bank and Gaza and so the opportunity to peace agreement was missed when the Labor party was in power , still today the Palestinian do not accept the 2 states solution and demand the elimination of the state of Israel

It is hard to allow the Palestinians have their own country when Hamas, a group with a lot of control within the territory doesn't recognize you. Also, Israel actually accepts a two-state solution in case you were wondering. Another thing, those same 'Palestinians' were part of the Ottoman Empire as regular Arabs, then after it fell, remained regular Arabs until 1948, when they suddenly became Palestinians. One final thing, these Palestinians some of you love, are the ones who come to Sweden and raise the rape rates by 58% in 10 years. Just saying.

Anyone who looks at the fact objectively will see that Israel is practicing ethnic cleansing on the Palestinians. Israel is the party which has ignored numerous UN resolutions to get it to go back to its previously recognised borders. Israel is the party who is building on illegally occupied land and making a two-country solution impossible. Israel is a country which has transformed it's citizens into right-wing racist bullies, who killl small children with impunity.

"Anyone who looks at the fact objectively will see that Israel is practicing ethnic cleansing on the Palestinians."

Laughable bullxhit.

If anyone is striving for "ethnic cleansing" it's the Arabs, they are literally calling for the death of all jews,

" Israel is the party who is building on illegally occupied land and making a two-country solution impossible. "

More bullxhit, It's the Palestinians who do not want a two state solution.

Google,

"Palestine Has Always Rejected A Two-State Solution"

"Israel is a country which has transformed it's citizens into right-wing racist bullies, who killl small children with impunity. "

Absolute rubbish.

"Infants and Children -Victims of Palestinian Terror "

Excerpt,

*Armed Palestinian terrorists attacked a school bus in 1970, taking children from the Avivim Moshav to their nearby school, killing 12 children.

*In May 1974, Palestinian terrorists attacked a bus with students from Safed, who were on tour to Ma'alot, killing 22 children.

*More recently, in June 2001, a suicide terrorist blew himself up while standing among a crowd of teenagers waiting in line to enter a discotheque at the Dolphinarium in Tel Aviv, killing 21.

*In December 2001, two suicide bombers blew themselves up at almost the same time on Jerusalem's Ben Yehuda pedestrian mall - crowded on that particular Saturday night with youths celebrating a friend's birthday - killing 11.

*In May 2001, Palestinian terrorists brutally murdered two young hikers they happened to come across near the community of Tekoa. Using rocks, they smashed the boys' faces beyond recognition.

*In March 2001, a Palestinian sniper shot and killed a ten-month-old Jewish baby girl in Hebron.

*In August 2001, Palestinian terrorists shot up a car full of Israeli teenagers in a drive-by shooting, killing a 17-year-old girl.

@ Gustav Jung

I hope you are joking. If Israel wanted to ethnic cleanse Palestine, it would take half an hour at most. There is no genocide. Why would Israel give up land? Would any country agree to give up land? If the UN asked America to give Texas and California back to Mexico, do you think America would even respond in anyway but F*** you? Also, Palestinians time and time again walk away from negotiations, and Israel wants to negotiate but not with someone who wants to kill all the Jews.

ZIONIST POWER STRUCTURE IN AMERICA

Now that we have established the ruthless and criminal nature of radical Zionism, one more lesson needs to be understood before we return to the five dancing Israelis of 9-11 and other related stories. Even the Zionists themselves have never denied that they have long exerted great influence in America. But what we must understand is that the Zionists do not merely influence United States policy....they dominate it! It is this domination that enables them to pull off monstrous crimes and then conceal them from the general public.

The observation that Zionists dominate the American media, government, academia, and Hollywood has been made by many prominent Americans and is easily verifiable by public information.

Without strong external force Israel will not have serious peace negotiations. The constant expansion of illegal settlements is clear evidence of the bad will of Israel. Israel just likes to use never ending peace negotiations as a cover to slowly, but surely to take more and more land and expel palestinians.

If western countries are not willing to have the same kind of embargo against Israel, that was used against South-Africa during apartheid, it shows that even western countries aren't really serious with the matter. Leaving occupied and powerless palestinians to negotiate with Israel, which holds all the power, is like making 5 year old girld to negotiate over the ownership of lollipop with a 100 kg thug, who is standing over her.

Saying that palestinians should just negatiate without any real support from western countries against Israel, which has constantly made clear that it is not seriously negotiation over peace, is just sligthly more polite way of saying that we couldn't care less what happens to palestinians.

You mean hard working jews who happen to own much of the media and Hollywood?

So what, someone has to own it.

As far as jews dominating the American government and academia, crock of bullxhit.

Who dominates the M.E media?

Who dominates the M.E. government and academia?

You jew hating conspiracy theorists sure have vivid imaginations.

Anyone else tired of hearing about palestine and israel?
01:48 January 20, 2012 by TheWatchman
@FinnishGuy

No, there should more pressure on Palestinians to negotiate. Perhaps the settlements should cease, but why should Israel stop when Palestinians had launched 8000 rockets into Israel over the course of 8 years? If there is ever going to be any sort of real negotiation, the Palestinians must first respect the Israeli peoples right to live in peace, then the rest will fall into place. Also, Israelis are also in favour of a two-state solution, but Palestine cannot have any military force.

Dear All

An interesting article.

Unfortunately it omits important points. First there are scores of UN resolutions and the ruling of the International Court of Justice pertaining to the illegal 'separation barrier' (which is 3 times the length of the Berlin Wall). Second, Palestine is recognised by 130 nations (including Russia, China, India, Brazil, Argentina, Malaysia, Indonesia and more recently by Thailand and Iceland). Third, UNESCO recognised Palestine overwhelmingly and recognition was accorded by France, Spain, Ireland and Norway - just a few of the many nations of the world that supported Palestine's legitimate bid. Fourth, the Road Map (2003) which Israel is a signatory is, stipulated that no new settlements should be developed including natural growth ones.

The present Israeli Prime Minister Mr Netanyahu has not agreed either to US President Obama's 1967 lines and ignored international legitimacy resolutions. Furthermore, Mr Netanyahu insists that Palestine recognise Israel as a Jewish State, but Israel refuses to recognise Palestine and the indigenous Palestinians. Mr Netanyahu's recognition failure has been illustrated by his inherent rejection of the UN Security Council resolution from 1980 - pertaining to Jerusalem - and also scores of other resolutions which deem illegal Jewish settlements to be a violation of the 4th Geneva Convention and insist that the national aspirations of the Palestinian people be fulfilled.

God bless
