Sex harassment claims taint Juholt ally anew

Sexual harassment allegations against Social Democrat foreign policy spokesperson Urban Ahlin have prompted the party’s feminist faction to object to his appointment as chair of party's Riksdag group, delivering yet another blow to Social Democrat head Håkan Juholt.

On Monday, Sveriges Television (SVT) reported that Juholt planned to name Ahlin as both group secretary in the Riksdag and deputy party secretary.

However, the Social Democratic Women in Sweden (S-kvinnor) were quick to express their displeasure over Juholt's choice.

The frustration comes from sexual harassment allegations against Ahlin which came to light following the 2010 elections.

“As a representative of Social Democratic Women in Sweden, I would gladly see that we don't appoint a deputy party secretary carrying around these sorts of problems,” Lena Sommestad, chair of the Social Democrat women's group, told the Dagens Nyhter (DN) newspaper on Tuesday.

According to the allegations, first reported by Aftonbladet, Ahlin reportedly promised to promote a female colleague in exchange for sexual favours back in 2008.

He also allegedly knocked on the woman's hotel room and asked to have sex with her during a trip to the United States and sent the colleague sexually-themed mobile phone text messages.

Ahlin has continually denied the allegations and the woman was later transferred to a different position within the party.

She has also refused to speak publicly about the accusations.

Despite the resurfacing of the allegations, Social Democrat MP Carina Hägg, who is also active in the party's feminist organization, expressed her confidence in Ahlin.

“We've discussed a number of gender-equality related issues and I think it's a shame that these old rumours keep coming up,” she told the TT news agency.

Juholt also defended Ahlin, pointing out that he had the confidence of former party head Mona Sahlin.

“Urban Ahlin is today the Social Democrats' foreign policy spokesperson. Urban Ahlin is the person who Mona Sahlin was ready to make the Social Democrat foreign minister. That says everything about his qualities,” Juholt told reporters before heading into a meeting of the party's Riksdag group.

In the wake of the renewed debate about Ahlin's qualifications, several prominent Social Democrat bloggers have expressed their sorrow over the state of the party and their weariness with Juholt's constant missteps.

“Juholt, I can't go on any more,” local politician and blogger Peter Höberg wrote on his blog, Högbergs tankar ('Högberg's thoughts').

“I've supported Håkan Juholt until now but feel there is a limit at which point my patience runs out,” adding that the limit is fast approaching.

Former Social Democrat MEP Jan Anderssson also expressed his frustration on his blog.

“I'm just sorry and disappointed,” he wrote.

Despite complaints from the Social Democratic Women in Sweden, Ahlin was nevertheless appointed to be the party's new Riksdag group secretary in a meeting on Tuesday afternoon, according to Expressen political reporter Niklas Svensson.

Why are 99 percent of sexual harassment allegations made by women against men?

More and more, we have expanded the definition of what constitutes sexual harassment. More and more we have stripped away the requirement of factual support for a complaint of harassment, and have pressured employers, who normally hear both sides to a grievance, to often hear only the victim's side to a grievance of sexual harassment. More and more, ideological feminists and the media indoctrinate women to see every man as a harasser in waiting. More and more, they have portrayed the female as a powerless, fragile creature who is easily offended and harmed by the mildest male indiscretion -- and whose dignity, it frequently turns out, can be restored only by ample monetary compensation.

More and more, even female employers are hesitant to hire a female worker (because in addition to all the regular reasons both sexes sue an employer, she creates the added risk of a sexual harassment lawsuit). Employers are also hesitant to fire or even discipline a female employee for fear she'll file a sexual harassment complaint and create both embarrassment and litigation/settlement costs, thereby eroding the company's efficiency and competitiveness.

More and more, being offended is, for many unscrupulous women, becoming the perfect cover for economic harassment of a business.

There are, of course, many legitimate complaints of sexual harassment and "hostile environment."

To see why many if not most of them occur, read an in-depth analysis of the sexes' most destructive behavioral difference:

@MaleMatters, You are absolutely right. Sexual harassment and rape accusations are becoming a weapon wielded by unscrupulous women for monetary reward, revenge purpose, blackmail; political or non-political. And the nonsense thrives best in Sweden more than any other country.

I think that Juholt must be secretly working for the Alliance government - look at all the help he is giving their 2014 election campaign - no-one can be be so totally incompetent that they run Sweden's (formerly) largest party like a Marx brothers film .......... or can they?
21:56 January 17, 2012 by SimonDMontfort
No - I think its all a conspiracy against the Social Democrat leader, dreamt up by those scoundrels in the Moderate-led government, to prevent the opposition regaining power in 2014. Lol!

Another example of terrible judgement by Håkan Juholt. I really don't see how the Social Democrats can move forward until they get a more capable leadership team. Hopefully in the meantime Jonas Sjöstedt and the Left Party can take their rightful place as leader of the opposition. We really need someone with a clear and positive vision who can hold Reinfeldt and his cronies to account.

@SimonDMonfort - how do you come to that conclusion - the government *force* Ljugholt to lie, contradict himself and demonstrate poor judgement?
09:55 January 18, 2012 by RobinHood
StuartM is correct. The Left Party will make worthy opponents to the Moderates in 2014, and will probably win.

In the meantime, please refer to me as Napolean Bonaparte. Oh, is it time for my medicine nurse? ... Please excuse me!

@Puffin: Who is "Ljugholt"?

My post was supposed to be a light-hearted reference to 'conspiracy theories'. Just trying to lighten the atmosphere on this site....
