The trial against the 31-year-old mother charged with murdering her two sons by pushing them in the water and watching them drown opened in Sweden on Wednesday.

The mother has admitted to having caused their death.

“Tevin didn't scream but Elias screamed for a long time. It was loud and he shouted 'no, no, no',” the mother revealed during interrogations, according to daily Aftonbladet.

4-year-old Elias and 8-year-old Tevin were found dead in the water near the Munkholmen swimming area in Sigtuna in late September. Suspicions were soon directed toward the boys' 31-year-old mother.

After first denying she had killed the boys, the mother later admitted to pushing her kids into the water and watching them drown. In interrogation she revealed that she had meant to drown herself as well.

"We were all supposed to die," said the woman, according to the paper.

But instead, she stood and watched and later called the 4-year-old's father, saying that “something horrible” had happened to the two boys.

The father reported both boys missing after the telephone call from the mother, which gave him a feeling that “all was not right”.

Prior to drowning her kids the mother had been becoming increasingly unstable and was experiencing severe financial problems.

“I felt I couldn't take care of them. That it would be easier if we all died. I had let them down. I had lost all hope of taking care of them,” said the woman when questioned by police, according to the paper.

On September 18th she took them both out on a jetty to end their lives. After finding the waters too shallow at first, she told them they were going home but instead continued on to a second pier.

Well there, she took off the children's clothes and pushed her two boys in. Neither could swim.

“I just stood there and cried. The idea was that I would jump in too, but I was too scared,” she said, according to the paper.

According to the woman, her younger son screamed for a few minutes as he struggled in the water, while the 8-year-old was silent.

“He did nothing. Said nothing. I think he died straight away,” the mother said, according to daily Expressen.

After watching her children drown, the woman went home and after changing went to a neighbour to telephone Elias' father. She thought that heaven was a better place for the boys, she said according to the paper.

The mother is charged with the murder of her two sons. After undergoing a medical investigation, the mother has been found to be suffering from a serious mental condition.

Since her arrest she has been held at a secure psychiatric ward at Huddinge sjukhus, in southern Stockholm.

According to Expressen she has been treated with anti-depressants and has been under serious strain since admitted to the clinic.

The woman's defence lawyer, Eva Möller, told the paper that her client is distraught about what has happened.

”She is terribly upset about what she has done,” Möller told the paper.

”I regret everything. I have killed my children and don't know how I will be able to live,” said the woman during the trial, according to Expressen.

So very, very sad.
17:48 January 18, 2012 by JulieLou40
I agree. She's never going to be able to forgive herself, and as somebody suffering mental issues, it's going to feel even worse. Don't get me wrong-my primary concern is for the poor boys who died, but she was obviously on a different planet so to speak, at the time.

It amazes me how many people kill themselves or others over financial problems. It is never worth it!! things can be worked out in some way!!

Really She did bad to her sons and her life as well but she has to face the justice and pay back that victim so it can be a great message to all nation.

I can't imagine a mother killing her children. She must be terribly sick.

@ comment number 3: Your comment doesn't make sense. Perhaps you would care to learn English before commenting on an English-speaking forum.

I feel for her and I wonder where the social services were? Swedish social services have a horrible reputation for taking kids away from perfectly fit parents. So why didn't they step in? I am sure some people in this woman's family/friends circle knew that she was not well but decided not to do anything.

This is a really sad story , I have a baby daughter and being a parent makes hearing about stuff like this 10x worse than before I became a parent. Poor family ..
22:31 January 18, 2012 by Vitas
It is very comfortable and acceptable for society to think she is sick. Laser man in Malmö is sick, Breivik in Oslo is sick. I read yours comments and can imagine how you make this swedish surprising sound: Aaaaa(reverse breath)

First - swedish social service is not so bad - especially about children

Second - all criminals knows: swedish prison 5-stars hotel

"I felt I couldn't take care of them. That it would be easier if we all died. I had let them down. I had lost all hope of taking care of them,"

That's not an excuse to kill your children. There might not be many doors open, but there is at least a window. You don't kill your children because you don't have enough money. I'm sure she regrets it, but two lives were lost because of her actions.

When I first saw the headline I assumed it was some sort of mental illness, the one where women kill their children soon after birth because of depression. It's not that because they were older already.

RIP. This is really terrible. I hope this would be a lesson to all families: partners relation should never affect children. They should stay away from everything that can hurt them. RIP...

The idea was that I would jump in too, but I was too scared," she said, according to the paper. Imagine the fear of the two drowning children you twit.

Too bad, the Swedish system is not about justice.

@JulieLou40

Perhaps the single most bizarre comment to be found on this site in years. This is, after all, a Swedish forum, although in an English format AND it is an open forum. Playing to your own inadequacies by acting as the arbiter of language usage is, at the very least, bigoted and ill-mannered. In other words, who died and put you in charge?
09:31 January 19, 2012 by Svenny Brogarth
I feel for the husband. I love it how he is just brushed over in all this. If he had killed the two boys the world would be grieving with the mum. Us dads love our kids just as much, im not an eye for an eye type of person but in this circumstance i think he should be allowed to push her of a jetty with lead weights strapped to her feet. Mental illness or not .

@vitas

What a staggering lack of empathy are you displaying here.

And also a lack of basic understanding of things.

This mother was so messed up in her head and depressed that she thought the only way out was to die with the three of them. Do you think a prison sentence would only come close to that level of horror? (no of course not, and I guess you are not a parent otherwise you would understand)

Do you think that prison sentences would scare would be family killers? Of course not.

Sadly these type of things happen several times per year in a country the size of sweden. (so let's say 1 per year per 3 million inhabitants or so) Even more times where the results wasn't this bad.

The only thing important here is to make sure that there are services in place that try and spot these psychological problems in an early stage so that help may come in time.
11:14 January 19, 2012 by John.Smith
There is nothing that can be done in terms of 'justice', the mother is sick, very sick and she will have to live with the consequences for the rest of her life.

@Julie Lou

I am astonished! This is perhaps one of the saddest articles ever on the TL and you choose to comment on the standard of someone's English? Have you no heart at all?
12:04 January 19, 2012 by Vitas
@eppie

I just dont believe this woman.

She was not so messed up in her head and depressed to cheat police and husband. She was enough strong too kill own children but too weak to kill self. I think swedish society is not ready to accept that killers like she are not messed-depressed but just cold killers. If we accept her story, in this case she is not guilty - she is just victim of social system.
12:13 January 19, 2012 by eppie
@vitas

The question is not if she is guilty or not. The question is how do we minimize these things happening in the future.

If you kill your own children you ARE pretty messed up in your head. No discussion.

well said Borilla and John Smith.

@ JulieLou40 , that guy is just showing his sympathy and expressing his feelings about this extremely sad news, and you are talking about his english?!! well if you dont understand what he means, that means your intelligence is terribly low, no matter what language that guy would have used. and talking about somebody's language ability bellow this sad news, means your humane senses are terribly weak too.
15:01 January 19, 2012 by eppie
@andthenme

I also don't understand what he means and my 'intelligence is terribly high'.

:)
20:27 January 19, 2012 by andthenme
@ eppie

i doubt that :-)

well, both of you seem to have a problem with his name. because i am not einstein and i do understand perfectly what he tries to say.

and one more thing for you, like me i am not an english native speaker and i have never wanted to be. as an italian native speaker if i do mistake in english, it is understandable and perfectly alright. just grow up then you understand other people :-)
13:07 January 20, 2012 by Gubbe
Such a sad state of affairs, and it was a rather horrific crime. Clearly anyone that could do such a thing is insane. That doesn't excuse the crime, it is just a reality. Tragic. Just tragic.

@JulieLou40: You Said:

"I agree.

It is never worth it!! things can be worked out in some way!!"

Followed shortly by:

"@ comment number 3: Your comment doesn't make sense. Perhaps you would care to learn English before commenting on an English-speaking forum."

In light of those comments, I'd like to point out that "who" should be "that", the use of double exclamation marks is incorrect in the English language, the word "things" should be capitalized in your last sentence of the first comment, and again, you really should only use one exclamation mark when making an exclamatory comment.

I take some issue with your use of commas instead of semi-colons, but not to a great extent, so I'll let it slide. However, I do think that your use of "so to speak" and allusions to other planets could have been expressed in a different and much clearer way. Your comments are far from an exemplary sample of the written English language.

Furthermore, in your second comment, you indicate that this is an English-Speaking forum, which is actually incorrect. This is an English Language forum (no hyphen, please) and does not "speak", as such.

So please, before lecturing others on their use of a language that you yourself have not mastered, take a break from the keyboard, breathe deeply and see if you can't just get past it. If you don't understand someone's comment, it is much easier to politely ask for an explanation rather than being rude and obnoxious. I know, psychologically, you probably experienced a little exhilaration with your rudeness, but did you stop and consider how the person on the receiving side of your comments might feel - even for a moment? Did you care? Do you now? Was this vitriol really necessary?
16:02 January 20, 2012 by andthenme
@Gubbe .. thank you for the time you took. you explained it perfectly :-)
