Elderly psychiatric patient found tied in bed

A mentally ill man was discovered tied down in his own bed with a sheet at a Carema-run nursing home in Stockholm earlier this month.

According to other staff members at the Linnégården home, the man was left screaming for help for over an hour before somebody eventually came to look after him.

It was allegedly an unqualified temporary employee at the home who was responsible for the incident.

"The staff member had no medical training and was responsible for 15 psychiatric patients," several staff members told the Dagens Nyheter (DN) newspaper.

Of the 86 residents at the Carema home, 15 suffer from a variety of mental illnesses, including depression, schizophrenia and bipolarity and live in a special separate ward.

The incident was not out of the ordinary on the ward, however.

“The man often falls out and is then picked up by the lone night staff member with the help of the night nurse in the house,” said one member of staff.

However, one hour later, the man was still crying for help and staff from the floor below came in to investigate.

There they found him tied to the bed.

“He was upset and confused and could not get out of bed. The temp had tied him in bed with a sheet so he could not move, like they do in prisons in the United States,” said an employee at the home.

The patient was immediately untied and the incident reported to the home manager Charlotte Haggren. However the following day the unqualified temp was back at work.

“There is a discrepancy written in an incident and we are investigating this issue. We'll see if there are grounds for a lex Sarah report,” Kerstin Stålskog, who has overall responsibility for the care for the elderly at Carema told the newspaper that the company is looking into the matter and considering filing a report with the health board.

This is the latest in a string of incidents at the Carema-run care homes for the elderly.

Last month at Linnégården, an elderly patient was discovered in pitch darkness with no electricity in her room after she had apparently forgotten to pay her bill.

this is, as usual, an over reaction.

i am a psychiatrist, and working in closed psychiatric hospitals/wards, it is not uncommon to hear patients yelling, and this is duo to episodes of psychosis (the patient has what is simply explained as "loss of perception" with reality).

in sweden, they actually tie patients to beds (somtimes with leather gloves on their hand and a helmet, to prevet them from biting or hitting their own head) as treatment until the episode passes (which can take hours-days), and not sedate them (which in my opinion is the best for the patient).

maybe thats not how they usually do it in the carema home. but thats how it is with psychiatric patients in sweden.

and for those who might assume the patient might really require help- their medical charts are in the system (so all the medical history is known and examined, on a regular basis, to see their evolution), plus the patients are normally watched on a rutinly by the nurses.

Isnt there any other possible option on earth? i mean some kinda injection which calms them down or something, i mean tie them? sounds a bit umhuman to me and not a nice thing. But i have never came across a psychiatric patients so may be.

Sounds like you need to read Lagen om psykiatrisk tvångsvård as there are strict legal constraints

If you were really a qualified psychiatrist you would know that this is an uncommon response to patients fullfill the conditions of the law - it must be proved that they are an immediate danger to themself or other and there are strict legal constraints: an unqualified staff member with no medical training cannot make this decision - only a specialist in psychiatry can make such a decision; . there is a formal review process - the bakjour must be informed and review the decision after a set number of hours; all such decisions must be reported to Socialstyrelsen; . such decisions are subject to review and appeal through the Administrative courts

Wow I didn't know that our United States prison's tied down their prisoners?!!!!

The man should not have been tied down in this manner it was wrong.

"The staff member had no medical training and was responsible for 15 psychiatric patients," makes it sound like the main cause of this incidence is a Management failure.

Any company that will hire untrained people should be obliged for the safety of all to train them BEFORE putting them to work.
