Northern lights over Sweden: a sampler

In case you missed the spectacular northern lights display that had the skies above Sweden glowing earlier this week, The Local has collected a few video clips that aptly capture the awe-inspiring aurora borealis.

Sweden's far north was treated to a spectacular northern lights display earlier this week as a massive storm of solar energy bombarded the earth's atmosphere.

Photographer Chad Blakley captured this amazing view of the aurora borealis in Sweden on January 24th, 2012.

The solar storm, billed as the strongest in six years, treated stargazers to an incredible display of pulsating colours that ebbed and flowed across the night skies.

"It was the biggest northern lights I've seen in the five-six years that I've worked here," Ice Hotel tour guide Andreas Hermansson told the Associated Press (AP) news agency.

According to Hans Norén, head of the Swedish Tourist Association's Abisko Mountain Station, bookings at the station have more than doubled since last year as increasing numbers of tourists venture past the Arctic Circle to catch a glimpse of the northern lights.

"December 2011, which kicked off the start of the northern lights season, was the best ever," he told Sveriges Radio (SR).

And things are likely to only get better, as scientists predicting a peak in an 11-year cycle of solar eruptions sometime in 2013.

We were at Abisko Mountain Station on the 20th, before the climax, and it was even wonderful at that time!

So much for those in Wisconsin who are fighting an Iron Ore mine because they erroneously think it causes air-pollution. These views look spectacular in the Kiruna region.
16:26 January 27, 2012 by powpow
@millionmileman While your carefully crafted argument is compelling, it is also completely wrong. These pictures were taken 100 km from the mine in Kiruna, with a mountain range far more substantial than any hill in Wisconsin separating the two. Also, all of the pelletized ore from Kiruna is transported past Abisko via electric railway, something that (like 3,000 ft. peaks) also does not exist in Wisconsin (where even commuter rail dies a political death). Also, I'm pretty sure that the mine, and the railway, are largely fueled by hydro-power. Where is the power for the Wisco mine gonna come from? Population densities are a little bit different here is Arcitc Sweden as well, where there wasn't even a road to Abisko until the mid-late 80's. A mine is not a mine is not a mine. But if you wanna use videos of Aurora to justify effing up Wisconsin, hey, that's you prerogative.

What has a mine got to do with this article. We are supposed to be talking about the AURORA.
21:14 January 27, 2012 by powpow
@gabletoon- Sorry about that. I thought so too, but couldn't just let that comment go. Hence my last sentence in the above post.

@Localer- I watched from the next bay down Torneträsk from where the first video was taken. YR.no has some photos from a bit further south in Norway, but not Southern Norway, so I don't know how far south they were visible.

Lots of great shots taken from the N.E.of England also.

More folk on the beaches in the middle of cold January nights than the middle of Summer.

@gabletoon and @ powpow

My whole point is that I said Kiruna as a region 60 miles is very close. I testified last month in favor of the Wisconsin mine precisely because the objectors were stressing air and water pollution and I did extensive research. One of the main points was the clear air in this part of Sweden, in spite of the gigantic mine the Aurora Borealis is exceptional for viewing and that was my point.

I have likewise seen the Aurora in Wisconsin as well. It's phenomenal.

Just lovely. Let's just hope that we can work to preserve the planet so that nature can continue to display such spectacular scenes to our descendants.
