Convicted killer wants to 'take a vacation'

A 31-year-old woman who is serving a life sentence for murder in a Swedish prison has demanded that she be allowed to take out holiday days.

Natalia Pshenkina was convicted of the 2005 murder of her ex-boyfriend, whose body was found in a bathtub six months after he'd been killed.

In February 2010, Pshenkina was transferred from a prison in Hinseberg to a facility in Ystad in southern Sweden where she took a job inside the prison.

Now, after nearly two years on the job without a break, Pshenkina thinks she is due some time off.

“I've asked the head of production about which times during the year the prison allows vacation time for inmates. The answer was that the prison doesn't have any vacation time at all,” she wrote in a complaint filed with Sweden's Chancellor of Justice (Justitiekanslern – JK), according to the Aftonbladet newspaper.

Pshenkina closed her complaint by claiming she is due compensation for the paid vacation days she's been denied over the last two years, arguing her job is covered by laws guaranteeing Swedish workers the right to 25 days of paid vacation per year.

But Swedish Prison and Probation Service (Kriminalvården) spokesperson Anders Annerfalk explained that inmates are covered by different laws than those governing the employment conditions of normal Swedish workers.

“They aren't employed by us and therefore laws about vacation time don't apply,” he told Aftonbladet.

So, which other hotel does she wish to be in - all paid for by the Swedish taxpayer? Oh, but to be fair she has been working, huh? So has she yet earned enough to repay all the costs of her accomodation and food, all the costs she placed upon society by her crime?

I guess she didn't figure that into her calculations!
10:19 February 1, 2012 by Tennin
Lol serving time in prison isn't a job. She's a criminal, not an employee.
10:26 February 1, 2012 by Snoopy!
ohhh go on give her the holiday she deserves , what I would like to know however that the article doesn't reveal is exactly what kind of work is she in ? and have i understood correctly or reading between the lines she actually gets paid !?
11:01 February 1, 2012 by saar
Ystad is a vacation town so this is a permanent vacation for her.
12:16 February 1, 2012 by Central European
Swedis jail compared to any russian ( guessed only :) prison means , that she is having the holidays already :)
13:04 February 1, 2012 by Opinionfool
She's already on holiday. Good grief full board and lodgings for the rest of her life, no need to submit a tax return, pay for her telecommunications, even to pay her legal costs. Makes one want to go out and murder someone too, just to receive the same privileges and freebies.
13:21 February 1, 2012 by SimonDMontfort
... quite right too (Lol!)

She also perhaps want a chauffeur, an executive car, as well as a choice of destinations. Will it be the Seychelles? Or a round the world cruise?
13:22 February 1, 2012 by engagebrain
Usual low standard article that fails to clarify central points.

Is she (a) asking for a holiday outside the prison or (b) asking for time off from work inside the prison.
13:26 February 1, 2012 by Opinionfool
@engagebrain

Does it matter? Her conviction means she forfeits conventional societal rules such a "time off". It's not as if this is "hard labor" or transportation.
13:26 February 1, 2012 by Boar
Maybe she would like to escape from Sweden. Because she needs to serve there for a longer life time sentence. Which could be a nightmare for her. I am not sure if she has got her Swedish Citizenship.
13:52 February 1, 2012 by Mickkelly
great idea, send her to prison in a warm country for a week or 2, morocco, thailand, south america maybe?

There is a mistake here; today is the 1st of February not the 1st of April. This is a joke, isn't it? You mean it is true: bl@@@y h@@l!!
18:21 February 1, 2012 by zooeden
And you know what, she´s gonna get it, its ZOOEDEN!!!
22:51 February 1, 2012 by foxpur
I think she should be transferred to a prison in China with all their ammenities and rights for 50 days of holiday.

I'm sure she will be... um... well treated

Too bad she wasn't convicted in Texas. If she were to have been convicted in Texas, then, today, she'd be enjoying a vacation of infinite duration in the promised land or hades, as might be applicable.
20:55 February 2, 2012 by Da Goat
Yeah I agree she probably would not enjoy a holiday as foreign jails are not as nice as Swedish ones!

it is probably a case of the normal female thing of "wanting what they can't have!"

although a nice warm place like Mexico or Thailand or even Indonesia might have a jail near the sea where she can gaze out at the free people on the beaches! Ytad may be a little chilly at the moment!

I recommend she be given a sailing holiday off the coast of Puntland Somalia.
19:58 February 6, 2012 by bethrichardson
I say give her the time off. She can't leave the jail, of course, but she can take her holiday and sit around like most other inmates. Or is it just here in the US that most felons are fat, lazy SOB's? Then again, spending a few weeks in a nice southern prison like those mentioned above might be just the thing she needs to appreciate how much worse her life could be. A Texas comedian once said (commenting on a bill to move violent offenders to the front of the death-row waiting list), "While other states are getting rid of the death penalty, mine is putting in an express lane!" One of the few things I like about this state. lol
