A Swedish hunter, attacked and mauled by a fully grown bear over the weekend, woke in hospital on Tuesday after a nine-hour operation.

“It was as bloody as a slaughterhouse,” the man's brother, arriving first on the scene, told the Aftonbladet paper.

Per Hedberg, 55, had been hunting with his brother in Bollnäs, eastern Sweden, when the bear awoke from hibernation and attacked him.

The hunter managed to free himself from the jaws of the bear with a shot, wounding the animal, and then made a mobile phone call to his brother Tommy who was nearby, according to newspaper.

Tommy had already heard the shot from afar when he received the call.

“I’ve been bitten by a bear. Now I’m dying,” Per said to his brother.

Tommy rushed to the scene with the help of his tracker dog, and found his brother lying wounded in the snow.

“He was badly bitten in the head," Tommy said.

Per had also managed to make a call to his girlfriend a few minutes after the incident and shared the grisly details of the attack.

“I was shocked when he said I should sit down. Then he explained about the bear attack and that he was badly injured. The bear had chewed on his head and refused to let go,” she told Aftonbladet.

On Tuesday, Per awoke at a hospital in Gävle after a nine-hour operation. His head and neck were badly damaged, as well as one hand which he used to protect his neck against the bear.

Police gave orders for the bear to be tracked and killed, and the municipality’s specialist hunter with the help of local hunting teams succeeded to fell him on Sunday.

The bear was an adult male who weighed in around 200 kilogrammes.

It is believed that the hunter’s dog had woken the bear from hibernation, prompting the animal's attack.

Can't really appreciate the size of the bear from the upside-down shot above. From here it looks like a baby!!

Interesting that bears use modern technology
12:16 February 1, 2012 by zircon
Swedes should be a lot more nicer to animals. Mice, rain worms, butterflies, and then step on to bigger ones. And not kill innocent pigeons or daimsels.
12:45 February 1, 2012 by budpg
This is what happens when you allow "slob hunters" into the woods with dogs. The dog harasses the bear who is in his den.... What do you people expect the bear to do- invite them in the den for coffee? The bear attacks in self-defense so they shoot it? Unbelievable These hound hunters are pathetic. I'm disappointed the bear couldn't finish the job- the world would be that much lighter with one less slob hunter

'Now I'm dying," Per said to his brother.'

Jeez!! Too many tough-guy John Wayne-type movies perhaps?

The hunter became the hunted, getting a taste of his own medicine.
13:59 February 1, 2012 by budpg
Swedish hunters are among the biggest whiners and snivelers. Even in the U.S.- where we have our share of slob hunters- even they don' hunt moose with dogs
15:11 February 1, 2012 by Liquidmonkey
the bear awoke when a hunter was trespassing on its territory and tried to defend itself and home.

so yeah, lets go out and kill the bear.

what is wrong with society?!?!?! the bear did nothing wrong. you wanna hunt, its at your own risk.

too bad the hunter lived.
16:09 February 1, 2012 by Borilla
Score: Bear 1 Hunter 0. As it should be. If a bear comes into your home, you would have the right to shoot it. If you go into the bear's home, the bear should have the right to eat you. In this case, the bear pays for something caused by a stupid human.
16:29 February 1, 2012 by eppie
Indeed, the least they can do is giving this guy a huge fine. Because of his stupidity a bear died.

Yet again Sweden inches towards its loss of credibility of "protecting its environment"......What a joke..... Stupid Slob hunters....
18:25 February 1, 2012 by zooeden
Poor bear, should have killed the hunter!!!!
18:41 February 1, 2012 by gabeltoon
The hunter was wrong to use a dog hence the outcome. The poor bear just did what was natural, but now it has tasted human blood the safest thing to do was to kill it. WHY DO YOU PEOPLE HAVE TO ALWAYS KILL EVERYTHING YOU SEE.
19:43 February 1, 2012 by rise
Poor bear. Stupid hunter.
20:30 February 1, 2012 by johan rebel
I always root for the bear.

It about time they issued the bears with guns.
03:30 February 2, 2012 by Jeff10
There's no scientific evidence that once a bear has tasted human flesh that it'll go after humans. Also, hunters assume this type of risk, so the bear shouldn't have been killed by the police.
16:07 February 2, 2012 by zeulf
@Budpg this is classic hunting in Sweden. so it's different than what is done elsewhere. using Helios for Wolves in Alaska is not sporting

@ Borillia As it should be, Hunting can be a dangerious activity, unless it's just for white packets in the Market Butcher.

Bambi story did a good job on the Psyche
20:46 February 2, 2012 by Da Goat
One should not awaken a bear or a woman with PMT ....stay Away hunters.

where did the silly notion that they killed the bear because it had a taste of human blood, read again they killed the bear because it was shot and a shot and wounded bear is as dangerous and cantankerous as my ex wife
17:33 February 3, 2012 by IWP
What do these idiots expect? You hunt bear, presumably planning a kill, and are shocked and outraged when it defends itself and attacks.
20:10 February 3, 2012 by Flutterbye
This makes me sooooo angry !!!!!!!!

I hate hunting and do not understand what pleasure ppl have in killing a living thing.

Through no fault of its own the poor bear is now dead, sooo unfair.

No sympathy for the man who was attacked.
21:00 February 3, 2012 by CCVB
of course, the poor bear had to die, DISGRACE on Sweden!!!!!! Why did he have to die???? he only defended his territory!!!! We dont kill humans who do the same thing so why kill an animal!!! Nasty human beings, cancer of this planet!

Reminds me of that old song: the Bear's Picnic....
12:02 February 10, 2012 by Samir S. Halabi
To be truthful I feel really sorry for the poor bear, he was asleep, he was in hibernation mode, I can't blame the dog either, as he doesn't know any difference,

however the hunter should be sufficiently knowledgeable concerning the ways of nature, if he isn't then he has absolutely no right whatsoever in hunting.
02:42 February 12, 2012 by biddi
I've been bitten by a bear, now I'm dying. Ahhhh, what a shame, booo hoooo. It was gross unfairness the bear was hunted down and killed - typical. For Per Hedberg and his stupid brother : maybe next time the bear will get lucky - I'll keep my fingers crossed.

CCVB : yes, I agree, humans are the cancer of this planet not least disgusting hunters/killers.

Ok, here's what happened:

The guy accidentally woke up a bear. Bear was angry, confused and hungry and went after him. Guy tried to defend himself, apparently successfully. Bear got injured and was therefore shot.

Here's why I don't agree with any of you:

I get that the guy was scared and that it's a horrible experience. I also get that this sort of thing CAN happen and it's not really anyone's fault. In fact, it's part of why we hunt. BUT, nowhere have I read any comment from the hunter who got attacked, that I would in any way categorize as "whiny". Where is he whining? Homeboy got attacked by a f*cking BEAR and he's saying it hurt and that he was scared. Who the f*ck wouldn't be in that situation? Why are you calling him a whiny b*tch?

To take pleasure in killing another being has a better name: murder.

If you will allow me, I have a couple of suggestions for those who think human beings are the cancer of the earth. Your continued presence here throws in to question the sincerity of this statement. If you truly believe this, then stop the cancer now and off yourselves. Or, maybe the whole lot of you could get together and off each other. Better yet, go out into the woods and feed those poor bears. This way you will have accomplished some good for the earth. Please feel free to point out the fault of my suggestion.
