Indian grad student missing in Blekinge

Police in Ronneby are looking into the disappearance of a 25-year-old Indian graduate student who was last seen leaving his apartment on Thursday night last week.

Dheeraj Reddy Donthi is a student at the Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) and was with friends at home before leaving his flat around 9.30pm on Thursday night.

"He told his roommates he was heading over to the university," Krishna Paruchuri, a friend of Donthi's, told The Local.

Although he said he was going to the school to study, Donthi didn't take his laptop with him.

Since then, no one has seen or heard from Donthi, and repeated attempts to reach him on his mobile phone have been unsuccessful.

At first, close friends thought that he was visiting acquaintances elsewhere, although these friends later confirmed this was not the case.

On Saturday, his friends reported Donthi's disappearance to the police and, nearly a week after he went missing, remain stumped and concerned as to where he might be.

"He didn't have any problems that anyone knew of. Things seemed to be going really well," Paruchuri said.

"If he wanted to leave the country, he would have taken his passport, but he left it at home.”

Donthi has been in Sweden for a year and a half and speaks limited Swedish, according to Paruchuri.

"His parents are very worried. They're planning to come to Sweden soon,” he said.

Police in Blekinge confirmed that they received a report about Donthi's disappearance and are looking into the matter.

Donthi was last seen wearing a grey hooded sweater, black jacket and blue jeans.

He has short hair, wears glasses, and has a slender physique.

Anyone with information relevant to the case is advised to call the Swedish police at 114 14.

What a week and still no trace by the police?? how awful is that? Or are they not taking up the case seriously, because he is an asian?? This is not acceptable at all !!

Let's hope for the best. One of the better outcomes could be what took place with an Indian friend of mine, also a grad student at the time, many years ago in Toronto.

The Toronto guy (an excellent physicist and mathematician) was simply fed up and angry about an upcoming marriage that had been arranged for him, and so he vanished for several months to get away from the whole scene.

He later was discovered with relatives in the US, who had agreed to keep his presence quiet.

How do you know that? Where do you read that? You are really prejudice.

@#1,

don't open your mouth if you cant talk sensibly.

Maybe they should try in Denmark or Norway.

I hope he is ok. Let's hope he wasn't targeted because he is an Indian.

what is his friend? terrible!!!

It is all drama which Reddy and his friends are playing, for getting Reddy's parents to Sweden that they can apply ayslum.

If police pressure on his friends, they will tell reallity.

@Blueyes, I think there's one flaw in your theory: India is not a war-torn nation. They have a few skirmishes at the border with Pakistan last I heard but there is no justification for seeking asylum.

#1 your statement has no basis. Unless the young man had been fitted with a tracking device, there's not much the police can do aside from interviewing everyone who knows him and has seen him before he disappeared, and asks for people to come forward with information. If repeated attempts to contact him over his mobile phone were unsuccessful, chances are it is turned off and can't be tracked even if it has GPS, as far as I understand.

Hopefully it turns out to be the case of trying to avoid a pre-arranged marriage as #2 suggested, and everything will turn out fine.

@ Blue eyes, Have you ever seen any indians in sweden as refugees? You are so ignorant....You should know the history before you talk...You have big mouth but small brain...
10:44 February 2, 2012 by Thunder Horse
@Joshua Smith, Contact me and I can show you many indian refugee...

And Blueeyes' comment is not worthless but might need a very good editing on the process to make it unique... lol

@Thunder Horse I would like to know atleast 1 Indian to whom Sweden has granted asylum seeker status.. Please give me your contact details..
13:48 February 2, 2012 by Yvr
@Knonwhite @Blue eyes. you can see lot of india refugees in Uppsala as I know. but dont know about other cities. If you want to know how they came here go and meet them @ saturday market. Like refugees but not (similar word parasites) came here for education from India. They are not studying here but working. Education became based to settle here.(If you want to know more try to get data from news paper distrubuting agency). Thats the reason I think free education is no more.

Indians might have come for work, but they aren't seeking asylum.

Thank you everyone who took time to read and respond. Dheeraj is my nephew. We do not yet know the reason for his disappearance. We are also hoping for his comeback.

Both his parents have a lovely support from family, friends and relatives. this guy also has a sister. All of us love this guy for what he is. We are all shattered.

Let me assure you that none of the above mentioned estimations are true, except the fact that he is out there somewhere in strange country, with or without any material and other kinds of support. We are not used to cold conditions, nor are equipped to deal with extreme cold weather conditions. Weather predictions are increasing our anxiety, as well.

I wish and hope the readers of this news would be able to help in finding him, and we would be more than happy and grateful to have him back in India, and into our family fold.
