An 89-year-old man from southern Sweden has been convicted of assault after ramming his shopping cart into that of another shopper.

The incident took place in July 2011 when the man was on his way into the Amiralen shopping centre just outside Karlskrona, the local Bltsydostran.se news website reported.

According to the victim of the assault, the 89-year-old first gestured toward her to get out of the way as they were both attempting to navigate the congested mall entrance.

The woman in turn gestured that the 89-year-old could take another route, at which point he rammed his shopping cart into hers, only to back up and do it again.

The collision was so violent that it caused the woman's cart to hit her in the chest, causing pain in her ribs.

After the incident, the woman followed after the 89-year-old to tell him that “just because you're old doesn't mean you can do whatever you want”, Bltsydostran.se reported.

The elderly man responded by punching the woman in the chest.

In court, the 89-year-old claimed he reacted when the woman blocked him from entering the mall and that she then ran after him, screaming.

The man also testified that he didn't have the use of his right arm, a claim supported by a doctor who testified on his behalf.

But two witnesses to the incident supported the woman's version of events, and the court convicted the 89-year-old of assault.

The man was ordered to pay a fine of 1,500 kronor ($222) as well as compensation of 350 kronor to cover the costs of the healthcare expenses incurred by the woman following the incident.

An 89 years old man ... for god sake just forgive him. Old people can get angry very easily and we should be kind enough to forgive them for they are as capable to control themselves, but they are not dangerous. There is this African proverb: "be patient to (don't be cursed by) a dying old man/woman, don't be hated by a growing kid"

that must be one crazy woman to sue an 89 year old person,.,.,

She might have been hurt by the incident but then she should have been kind enough to move out of the way when the old man asked her to,.,.,

I am surprised that there are not more stories like this. The pensioners/old people in Sweden are often very rude and obnoxious in stores.

Beauty is in heart not in skin, hair or eyes.. Pity on that girl who sued a 89 year old man..

SEK 350 in medical costs. Man, he must have really messed her up!
11:19 February 6, 2012 by Dazzler
So what if he is 89, I don't understand that logic. After a certain age your not libel for your actions? I would of dented that old mans forehead.
11:29 February 6, 2012 by Puffin
@McChatter

350kr would be the standard cost of an emergency room visit

Surprised at how many of you think it is OK for a man to punch a woman so that she needs medical treatment - even if he is 89!!

"the 89-year-old first gestured toward her to get out of the way as they were both attempting to navigate the congested mall entrance."

Interpersonal skills - Swedish style. LOL!

Social grace, Swedish style.

He gestured for her to get out of the way. She gestured for him to get out of the way.

In civilized nations, the normal gesture is to step slightly to the side, while making a little motion with the hand, a signal that the other person should pass before oneself.

Never seen it happen here.

Both parties were wrong in my eyes. As a man i was brought up to always step aside to let a woman pass by.Yes the younger if she was the younger should have given way to the pensioner. Don't you respect women or pensioners in SWEDEN ?????

Agree with some posters that it is idiotic that he should be absolved of his crime because of his age. And what gave him the right to get into the mall ahead of her?

Sometimes sentences are lighter for young teenagers due presumably to their lack of worldly experience, but an 89 year old should know better. The guy's an imbecile.

I have personally seen at least two maniacally angry elder men, one of whom was screaming at the woman in front of him in the lineup for the cash register at a grocery store and banging his walker on the ground, and another who tried to hit me with his cane, in both cases essentially for nothing. I wonder what it is about the elder Swedish generation that makes some of the men so hostile.
13:29 February 6, 2012 by RobinHood
The victim did not sue the old man. The policeman who attended the incident passed a report to a prosecutor, who prosecuted the elderly gentleman for the public good. The Local's headline is misleading, the key event in this unhappy story is that the elderly gentleman punched the victim in her chest.

Probably the fact that Sweden is now an Uber feminist society with everything favoring the woman.... Men here feel less than zero...

89 yo,just how hard could he hit her! This has to be a fairy tale or something.I cant believe in sweden you can get convicted of assault with the strength of a 90 year old man......Id buy the story if said old man falls into womans chest as he turned towards her and stops himself from falling by extending his arm out..... This woman should have been arrested for blocking the right of way and a fire hazzard, Blocking the escape route. Makes about as much sence. In america we call such women as suffering from the GLADYS CRAVITS syndrome. Nosey and in everybodys business.

Old people on crack.
16:36 February 6, 2012 by oldonpalouse
My relatives in Sweden have mentioned this type of behavior several times. Older people being demanding and acting as if they expect to be first. There are several reasons for acting like this, especially pain or senility. Here in the American Northwest I see nothing but courtesy and helpfulness for the elderly. It lets you know you are getting old.

What is the reason for this behavior in Sweden? Would make a good article for the Local, a little investigative journalism.
16:56 February 6, 2012 by Reason abd Realism
@ oldonpalouse

Possibly irritability due to undermedicating for pain or other ailments. I've been told that Swedish Doctors hate to prescribe anti-biotics, for example, for fear of diminshing their effecitivenss by overuse. Along the same lines, the Doctors here may have a tendency to hover near the low or no end of the prescribed drug regimen, which may lead to some patients toward agressive behaviour. Just a thought.

harleyrider1978 # 14 - and that is why I want out of the backwards country. When is it EVER acceptable for anyone to hit another person? I don't care how old they are, whether they are male or female - you do not strike another person! But you probably also think it's ok to hit children rather than actually TEACH them right from wrong.

Reason abd Realism # 17 - that is possible. I'd be interested to see the results of such an investigation, perhaps they can get help for people and avoid problems like this.

Swedish and manners do not mix. Swedes can be very polite but have no manners. The old man and the woman were both wrong.

such friendlt people in Karlskrona,?
22:55 April 9, 2012 by prophet_of_the_horizons
men, no matter what age, should always be courteous to women.

anyway, the old man could have waited, it is not as if he has anything important to contribute to.
