A 10-year-old girl had her throat slashed with a knife outside a school in Gothenburg in western Sweden on Monday morning, according to police.

The attack, which occurred outside the Bergsgård school in the Hjällbo district northwest of central Gothenburg, left the girl seriously wounded.

She was taken to Östra Hospital with the knife still in her throat, according to a statement from police, and was later moved to Sahlgrenska Hospital.

Emergency services received a call about the stabbing at 9.51am on Monday morning.

"The patient was loaded into the ambulance at twelve minutes past ten," Jack Söderberg, a shift leader with the emergency service operator SOS Alarm, told the TT news agency.

According to police spokesperson Björ Blixter, the girl is conscious and told police she had never seen her attacker before.

“We've been able to talk to her. There's nothing to indicate that the injuries are life threatening, but she's still seriously wounded,” he told the Expressen newspaper.

Police are also speaking to family members and acquaintances in hopes of coming up with a possible motive for the attack.

“We don't have any motive at the moment,” Blixter told the Dagens Nyheter (DN) newspaper.

Later on Monday, police hinted that they couldn't rule out that the incident may have been the result of some sort of accident.

Police spokesperson Mats Haake told the TT news agency there were conflicting witness reports about what happened and that it was “unclear” whether the stabbing was indeed a crime.

“We're trying to collect information in order to figure things out,” he said.

According to police, there are no known threats against the girl or her family.

The perpetrator is believed to be a male in his twenties and remains at large.

He may have also been caught on film.

“There are surveillance cameras in the area and we're now gathering footage from them,” Blixter told DN.

The area where the attack occurred has been cordoned off pending a forensic investigation.

Police have classified the incident, which was witnessed by several people, as attempted manslaughter.

Following the attack, shaken parents and students gathered at the school.

“This is a quiet area,” one parent told the TT news agency.

The school sits between two six-storey apartment buildings and a wooded area in Hjällbo.

Monday's stabbing is the latest in a string of recent knife attacks at schools in Sweden.

In mid-December, 1 19-year-old was seriously injured after being stabbed several times in connection with a fight at the Österänggymnasiet in Kristianstad in southern Sweden. Two men were arrested following the incident.

A few weeks earlier, a 17-year-old student was cut with a knife while entering a high school in Vallentuna in suburban Stockholm.

The boy was seriously injured in the attack and remained sedated for several days.

Are you taking the PiiiiiiSS! ? " Police have classified the incident, which was witnessed by several people,............ as attempted manslaughter"

No I wasnt there , but this if reported correctly ? sounds like attempted murder.

And the Local editor in command how come your aloud to have profanities in writing within your articles time & time again , but I cant say Pisssssss correctly as its deemed as a profanity ?
11:54 February 6, 2012 by StockholmSam
I am seriously rethinking my choice to become a teacher. Such violence does not happen so often in other industries. Kids are stressed and full of rage.

This is not the civilised, crime free Sweden that I used to know. What has happened to cause such regular imbecilic criminal behaviour on the streets???

Yet again we see what those ethnic swedes are about.

Imported medieval scum.
13:39 February 6, 2012 by just a question
The ethnic background of the child that stabbed the girl doesn't matter. You will be surprised to see that violence is widely extended among all Swedish children. I'm talking about physical and verbal violence. Teachers know it, but pretend not to see it because is better not to see what's going on (to keep their jobs)
13:42 February 6, 2012 by J Jack
this smells like some kind of honour attack or vendetta .. the cops better find the men in the family and find out what they're into.
13:45 February 6, 2012 by wolverine2k
And what did the witnessing several people do? Let the perpetrator go? How shameless? I would have hurled whatever was in my hand at the perpetrator and made sure that he doesn't escape doing that hideous deed!
15:08 February 6, 2012 by zooeden
This is just obscene evil, as parent I wish the heavy force of law aprehend this animals and depending on exhaustive study, determine if makes case for life in prison, more than 10 years or guillotine!!!
15:10 February 6, 2012 by Migga
@ wolverine2k

I`d imagine that the witnesses were the girls 10 year old classmates. If so you can`t really blame them.
15:30 February 6, 2012 by Rick Methven
From the spelling and grammatical standards of some of the posters on this topic, it seems that you could do with joining this 10 year old girls English class. I am sure their standard of English is better.
15:44 February 6, 2012 by Svensksmith
One wonders what a ten year old girl could possibly do to warrant such an attack? Perhaps she was dressed too provocatively???
16:17 February 6, 2012 by Tanskalainen
She didn't have her burka on.
16:31 February 6, 2012 by jostein
Another possible scenario is that a group of kids are horsing around with a knife they found. Being kids an accident happen and the kids try to protect kid that held the knife/pushed the girl so she fell on the knife.
16:41 February 6, 2012 by Dazzler
Reading the full article would help a few of you folks, it was plainly stated the perp was a male in his 20s.
17:38 February 6, 2012 by Rod Munch
It would be really nice to get a full description of the suspect. It makes one wonder if the police/media really want to catch this person if they are not giving out a full description.
21:20 February 6, 2012 by blursd
"The perpetrator is believed to be a male in his twenties ..."

Wow ... what a detailed and helpful description. I'll keep my eyes out for about a sixth of the population of Sweden.

Honestly ...
21:27 February 6, 2012 by jostein
@blursd

Well, that description is the same as saying that he is not of scandinavian descent. If he had been, it would have said so and the story would have gotten greater coverage. However, in Hjällbo you are right, the description covers a sixth of the population. A fraction less maybe.
05:30 February 7, 2012 by TheWatchman
@blursd

Yeah... that's like saying that the perpetrator has brown hair with glasses in Canada. Useless.

@Tanskalainen

Swedish girls must always remember to wear their burkas! Thank goodness for Muslims! Seriously though, it will be far too late when the government actually recognizes it was the worst thing to happen to Sweden in all of its history.

@Harry(R)

ABB's actions were unnecessary, but everything he said was absolute truth.
09:23 February 7, 2012 by occassional
No burqa or nijab = whore. Not a whore? Then you must be gang raped and become one. Don't like any of the above options? Then you get knifed.
12:36 February 7, 2012 by Harry®
Apparently the attack was video taped by security cameras so they could even show pictures of attacker?
12:42 February 7, 2012 by Bumblebeetuna
Chritians do bad things too! Europeans have over 1000 years of brutal history! This could have been a Breivik like young man.
13:57 February 7, 2012 by mafketis
"This could have been a Breivik like young man"

Technically that's true, but it's more likely that if it were, he would have been identified as such by now...

One should stop boosting that sweden is among the safest countries in the world. People should be allowed to know and beware of what really is going around them.
21:40 February 7, 2012 by AW_S
Sweden is not safe country. Stories about the low crime are stories of social democrats idiots. 500000 muslims in this country is a social-economic destruction.
10:44 February 8, 2012 by cogito
Rick Methven #14) "From the spelling and grammatical standards..."

Here you go again: sneering at posters who are sometimes writing in their second, third or even fourth language.

Perhaps you think it's your right, as a Brit, to be a language racist. If so, you should try to avoid the frequent gross illiteracies and spelling howlers in your own posts.

I cannot be bothered to give examples here. But I will if you ask politely.

To those of you lamenting, "What happened to Sweden?" Come OFF it. You know already.

You allowed Barbara Spector and her nefarious Tribe in. They borught in racial aliens. It's not aobut "culture" "education, or "poverty", It's about RACE. Culture is an expression of genetics.

So how is that tolerance of diversity workiing out, for White nations?
