German 'tourist' living in Gothenburg airport

A 27-year-old German man has been living at the Gothenburg Landvetter airport for two months having no wish to return to Germany and nowhere to go in Sweden.

”I am ashamed. I have led a bad life. I have nowhere to go,” said the man to daily Aftonbladet.

According to the paper, the man, a German citizen, turned up at the airport with a suitcase and a passport. But he doesn't want to travel home nor anywhere else. The border police, who see the man every day, say that they have no plans to make him leave.

”He doesn't want to go home. He wants a job and to be able to stay here. It isn't that easy. The German consulate has been trying to help him. He has no money but people give him food and coffee. People feel sorry for him. He is no trouble at all, and fits in well among the travellers at the airport,” said head of the Landvetter border police, Ingerd Nejding, to the paper.

The man sleeps at the airport every night, most often in the prayer room. If he manages to get some money for the bus he sometimes goes in to Gothenburg centre but he always returns to the airport at night.

He has no money at all and only survives because the airport café supplies him with the occasional meal. On Sunday, the border police believed he had left after being offered a job.

”But he turned up here today again,” Nejding told Aftonbladet.

The police, the church and the German embassy are now all trying to help the man.

”We'll see. Sooner or later he'll probably just take off. He must get tired of being here. It can't be that fun. We're all hoping it will work out for him,” Nejding told the paper.

I am a student looking for a part time job. I have tries handing out CV's at hotel, bars and cafes to no luck. Maybe I should spend sometime at Arlanda to see if I get any job offers
17:34 February 13, 2012 by FutureHuman
@Chuck_Norris,

Good idea, but please make sure that you have a European passport first:)

I can imagine how the story could have taken a whole different shape if this guy was a non-european... or perhaps there wouldn't have been a story to begin with.
18:04 February 13, 2012 by SimonDMontfort
Extraordinary fellow: I only hope he gets what he says he wants, and that Sweden is worth his level of commitment to stay here
18:27 February 13, 2012 by jan.petras
Oh yeah poor German guy! He has nowhere to go..

What if he would have been Bulgarian or Polish? Would you have the same reaction?

You don't have to answer me. Answer yourselves. What makes you hate the east when we have the same blood.

"I have led a poor life" - the German said.

Well most Polish, Bulgarians or Romanians for that matter didn't even have half the chances he got, and still they would have been sent to prison for "tresspassing airport security" or "being homeless"

It sickens me to see such hatred where there's no reason. Especially in Europe which we should make out of an example for the world to see it's possible to be kind to every nation around your borders.

Isnt there anything like a "squatters law" here? Toss his goosestepping ass onto the tarmac!
20:31 February 13, 2012 by BillyB
Its strange people are happy for him to stay there every night.

If some homeless people turned up everyday would they be given free food and drink and allowed to stay...im guessing no....

Two words: The Terminal. Great film. Cool that someone is doing it for real. Probably an art project.

Why is this news?

When you feel low, it's always good to read a cute, odd, story on thelocal.se and the readers comments. Because you will always find a bunch of people more bitter than you are, and that lifts you up.
23:20 February 13, 2012 by BillyB
Nothing like the Terminal. In that he could not leave the airport as he had no valid passport and no valid visa due, and no country to go back to.

This bloke leaves the airport and goes sightseeing when he feels like it and is just a nut
00:37 February 14, 2012 by Samuel Nemalladinne
@ #2 exactly !! If it was a non-european and more if it was pakistani/indian/bangladesh... u know the brownied... they would be asked or forced to leave the country... poor germans my ass !!
00:43 February 14, 2012 by Shawntooth
oh germans love sweden, even nowadays you'd always hear germans say "we love the northen RACE"....literally.......well do i have to say more? lol
08:36 February 14, 2012 by bourgeoisieboheme
Being German I assume he speaks no Swedish... why would he not return to Germany where he speaks the language and and there is social welfare and a ton of jobs with the lowest unemployment in Europe. Sounds like this guy is a bit off really.
12:21 February 14, 2012 by johnny1939
Put him on Luft Hansa!!! Going sightseeing? He should not be let back in w/o a valid ticket and reservation I am sure the German Embassy would supply him w/ one now. What is everybody's problem? After this article there will probably be more squatters and they might not be as nice and friendly as this one.
12:53 February 14, 2012 by GLO
Now, this is the first time ever I have a soft spot to help the guy. Get him a job at the airport cleaning the place up. or send him home.
19:35 February 14, 2012 by barock and roll
Billy B

agree with you. so many homeless in every cities, but if they turn up at the same place what are the chances they are offered shelter and food? even though they are Swedish.

Bugger Off, what if he was from Pakistan???
06:15 February 16, 2012 by SR tarar
If i would be optimist he maybe treated as the same as German do and if i will take it as reallistic then will be the opposite for Pakistani ,,, he must be sent back maybe wihin a weak .
09:02 February 16, 2012 by J Jack
If he is ashamed of a bad life that he can not return to then best take his fingerprints and call the Polizei.
20:56 February 17, 2012 by JerseyTjej
Having sent out 207 CV's and living on the AMS web site, I find it amazing that he is being offered a job, obviously speaking no Swedish. If only the job market were that kind in reality, or better still, if some one could redirect the offer to me, I would graciously accept.
