'This was exactly what we feared': Malmö police

The man suspected of stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death in Malmö had recently been sentenced to a year in prison for assaulting her.

The 39-year-old woman was attacked and stabbed in the street on Friday afternoon.

Several people were around to witness the act, including the woman's two young children, who saw their mother killed.

Police believe that the act may have been prompted by a custody battle between the man and the woman.

The man had been convicted of assaulting her in November, a verdict he appealed.

He had been released while waiting for the new trial date. On Sunday he was arrested once more.

"The district court judged that he was unlikely to relapse into crime," said the man's lawyer Ulf Bjermer to local newspaper Sydsvenskan, as an explanation for why the man was set free after his conviction.

"This was exactly what we feared would happen," said Roger Carlström, one of the police officers who headed the investigation of the previous assault, in reaction to reports that the man had killed the woman.

During the original assault, which occurred in October 2011, the 45-year-old man apparently forced the woman down to the floor, and put hand cuffs on her.

The man admitted the assault, but claimed to have been hit by a blackout.

He appealed the November conviction, wanting to serve a suspended sentence and community service instead of jail time.

While waiting for the retrial, the court ordered the man released, judging that he wouldn't impede the investigation.

The woman received police protection, however, including an emergency telephone.

But those extra measures were apparently not enough to protect her on Friday when her ex-boyfriend confronted her on the street and fatally stabbed her.

"The lawyer said that since the man was forbidden from contacting her it wasn't necessary to keep him locked up. But that was completely wrong," Carlström told Sydsvenskan.

According to the newspaper, police had also received warnings about the 45-year-old from his neighbour.

"The 39-year-old woman was attacked and stabbed in the street on Friday afternoon" what kind of country is this? In the street means there are lots of people gathering but no one willing to help her this is really ignorance and typical Swedish culture.

"The district court judged that he was unlikely to relapse into crime,"

So why was there a need for police protection?

This isnt just a shop robbery, its assault and emotional or rational motivations for assault don't just go away. Seems it doesn't take much common sense to be a district court judge.

Shozea - I would be very surprised if any Swedes were involved or were even in the vicinity.

The mollycoddling rehab centres they call prisons here should thus be modernised to cater for some of the imported scum that instead roams the streets freely. No more plasticine and pottery classes. No more Shakespeare and yoga.

Sweaty, hairy chested matrons with welding sets and crocodile clips together with weekly sessions of incessant buggery by mechanised jigs and mid-afternoon bromide spiked tea followed by chair leg smashing on their skulls would make the inmates feel more inclined towards reforming.

They should frame him for downloading movies, he will face a much stiffer prison sentence. Of course the fact the tax athoritys INSIST on sharing all the womans details online, means that should could never be safe

i didnt understand the article,

"Several people were around to witness the act, including the woman's two young children, who saw their mother killed"

then it says

"The woman received police protection, including an emergency telephone."

so the woman is dead or alive?
17:18 February 19, 2012 by Migga
The woman is dead. She was an ethnic Swede. The man has a foreign background with his father being from Serbia.

It wasn`t in the middle of the street, it was an inner yard between houses. When witnesses arrived it was already over. There was nothing to be done. They took care of the children and kept an eye on the man. Police arrived a few minutes later.

The man probably followed the woman after being in court to sort out custody. There is only so much society can do when trying to keep a person safe from an obsessive husband. Sweden is one of few countries who is in the forefront in this.

"In the street means there are lots of people gathering but no one willing to help her this is really ignorance and typical Swedish culture. "

No, it's quite a normal human reaction and not specific to Sweden (note the case of the 2 year old child in China last year). It's called the by stander effect and psychologist have investigated the phenomena since the 1950s after an incident in the US.

police hasnt done their job well & the trend, of helping people by local people is not

help-some, need to be improved.
18:45 February 19, 2012 by nar klockan klamtar
In the light of his vicious previous actions I guess the ex girlfriend had a good idea that this was going to happen at some time. In the absence of any meaningful protection, the hunted woman should have become hunter and acted arbitarily to eliminate the threat to herself and children. She would have had a very good case in the subsequent court trial.
19:19 February 19, 2012 by muscle
@ Asimullahkhan: its not the police its the judiciary who didnt do the job well.

I dont know what will it take to make the judiciary understand the lack of severe punishments will not make morons like these ex-bf learn anything. Perhaps some similar act on a member of judiciary?

good, thats what you get for throwing the kids in the middle of a divorce, ill see her in hell..
03:08 February 20, 2012 by johnoleson
Only in Sweden.

"The lawyer said that since the man was forbidden from contacting her it wasn't necessary to keep him locked up. But that was completely wrong,"

What's next, prisons without fences because the prisoners are forbidden to leave?

Run this scenario by a typical 5 year old and gain new wisdom and insight.
03:39 February 20, 2012 by strixy
Why is such an affluent country so ill prepared to handle such cases? Assaulting a spouse is a warning sign that this is a case of domestic violence. This woman should have been notified of the release and should have been able to file for a restraining order in advance!

The district court judge should lose his job immediately because he failed to recognise signs of prolonged DV that every hands-on-job worker learns to recognise during the very core training in every civilised country. Let alone someone whose job is to pass judgement!
08:28 February 20, 2012 by Liquidmonkey
another perfect example how the swedish system fails to protect the victims but when it comes to the criminals, hey, they are 'forbidden' so we just let them go.

and its not just sweden, this is happening globally where criminals have more rights and freedoms allowing them to prey on innocent people time and time again.

disgusting.

exactly you should have shot him in the face.

This is so tragic. How many deaths will it take before the powers that be finally admit that the jucial system here is not working? How many families will have to be destroyed?

1-Lets go back to one year ago or more when this man and woman who had children together; started to have problem in their relationships. In this kind of situation generally if the woman initiating for the separation; suddenly she gets so crazy that requests for too much help. The police that when you need them for real emergencies you might not find them, for this kind of situations they are always ready for intervention!

So Police rushes to the home where these, man and woman are living. The man shocked to see the police there desperately ask what is happening. At least two polices rush to him and say; don't say anything, go out immediately! Man again desperately says; here is my house these are my children and this is my wife what has happened that I have to leave my house? They say that we are here because of the wife's (or girlfriend's) request. The man says that we don't have that much issue that intervention of the police would be necessary. One of the polices says; put your cloth on and f**k your a** off of this place. Man says I do not have any place to go at this time late of the night. They say that's your problem and in the meantime they rush in a way to that unfortunate man whom would think that he could be killed. In the meantime, even the woman dare to slap some to his face! This man who had until some minutes ago; home, woman and children; after the police intervention; does not have any family and rights to think even about them, and even tomorrow or later if he wants to get in touch with his woman and see the children and talk peacefully with here; his peaceful behavior assumed by authorities as a try too attack!?

And this is not all; every day people coming to this unfortunate man and report that; another man is going to his house and staying at night with his wife or (woman).

All these wrong approach of the police and authorities create so much hate and desperation on this unlucky man who could think; "for nothing I am in the hell and she is having good time why I should not do something, now I am in the hell then I would be in the hell, lets do something!"

In fact in this sad case both the man and woman are the victims of the wrong approach of the authorities.

In Marital issues never at first the police intervention; at the most some peaceful training people or authorities. And not suddenly rejection and denial everything from the man!

In terms of technology, if the left wing judge was so keen on letting this maniac walk the streets, then there should have been an ankle bracelet securely locked to the attacker, with GPS, so that the woman's police cell phone alarm would go off whenever the attacker was less than 1000m away from her, so that she could get herself to a safe place, and/or prepare to use her pepper spray or handgun. At the same time the ankle bracelet should give the maniac a shock and/or tell him to not get any closer to her, and alert the police automatically.

Another form of technology is called a prison, and the attacker should have been there all along.

@ indeedmagnifier

You seem to be blaming 'the system' for why this woman was stabbed to death in front of her children. Has it not occured to you than even in an ordinary marriage that has no violence and no police involvement, a woman can choose to end the relationship for reasons that the man does not agree with, and that she should not have to worry about been stabbed to death for that? If the man was normal he would get custody of the children 50% of the time, I'm hoping that you never have any decision making power with regard to domestic crime..
