Swedish street signs axed over 'perky' breasts

Published: 22 Feb 12 13:18 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/39264/20120222/

Signs featuring a woman with "perky" breasts and a short skirt are set to be removed from the streets of Uppsala in eastern Sweden following a mix up that has left local officials baffled.

The signs, which depict a silhouetted woman crossing the road, were from a batch of images outsourced by independent designers that were rejected by the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) for running afoul of the agency's policies.

The woman on the sign, known as Fru Gårman ('Mrs. Walkman'), is a gender-sensitive version of her male counterpart, Herr Gårman, a name that translates both as 'Mr. Walkman' and 'This is where you walk'.

The signs erected in Uppsala, however, show a seemingly younger and bustier woman, with a shorter skirt and a somewhat sprightlier step compared with the design that was eventually approved.

According to a report in the local Upsala Nya Tidning (UNT), the female silhouette's breasts were "too perky".

The mix up has left staff at Uppsala municipality stumped as to how the signs made it on to the city's streets.

“Somehow, a rejected variant of the accepted prototype from several years ago was produced and erected on the streets of Uppsala,” Tina Hallin of the Uppsala municipality told The Local.

The 2008 unveiling of the 'Fru Gårman' signs was preceding with a great deal of publicity after several designs were rejected for being “too feminine” and for not following the regulations that a new road sign may not erected if it could be confused with an existing design.

The Fru Gårman signs featuring the rejected design have now been taken down around Uppsala, even though there have been no official complaints from the residents.

“Individually, one may think it’s rather dashing, but of course we follow the regulations and will replace it with the original design,” said Christer Åkerlund of the traffic department in Uppsala municipality said to UNT.

First they complain that the signs depict a man, but are totally unable to comprehend the underlying pun, and then they complain that the woman replacing the man is not up (or down) to their standards. Some people are never satisfied.

ridiculous!!!!!!!!
15:22 February 22, 2012 by byke
I recognize the silhouette on the left ... its from a food or cleaning product ... just cant place it.
15:38 February 22, 2012 by viggen61
Some years back, while riding through downtown Uppsala with my friend who lives there, he pointed out one of the "Herr Gårmann" signs. Seems that this Herr Gårmann was a punk rocker complete with spiked hair!

It's a few self aggrandizing media people complaining. Who cares, these people have taken political correctness to a ridiculous extreme. If they wore burkas maybe these people who be pleased. Can't see much in that garb.
16:18 February 22, 2012 by karex
The worst part is that they will not be taken down and replaced at no cost - a major waste of tax money for no legitimate reason. I mean honestly, can anyone say that the image is offensive in any way? Don't they have more important issues to solve and use tax money on like health and education, for example? How about road maintenance and yes, salting all roads in winter (not just some here and there) so people don't get killed.

After next election the signs will depict a woman dressed in burkha (accompanied by a man of course)

16:49 February 22, 2012 by OUIJA
@Lovelygirl. Next step is also to paint men and women as flat as possible. God provide you with buttocks and boobies but Sweden prohibits those beautiful attributes to be display.

THESE were the BUSTY pictures.. Seriously THESE???? Some pervert might be sitting there and judging the pictures. If he is imagining some HOT thing out of these.. :S its not the pictures issue >S
17:25 February 22, 2012 by Abe L
People who time to worry about these things need to get a reality check and be put to work. It makes NO difference what's on the picture, it's meant to indicate a road crossing point for pedestrians.
17:29 February 22, 2012 by Trenatos
This is incredible.. wasting money replacing the signs after they've been up for how long?!

And as for the original verdict: Stop being morons.

Bohoo, the woman depicted seems younger and perkier, is that a bad thing?

Males and females are different, besides isn't Sweden supposed to be all sexually progressive?

People have too much free time if this is the result.

17:54 February 22, 2012 by Reason abd Realism
Can citizens recall the mayor of Uppsala and fire him/her for this heinously idiotic waste of taxpayer money?

Maybe some money can be raised if these signs can be sold to an unsuspecting international buyer as material that has been 'banned in Sweden due to excessive sexual content'.

20:14 February 22, 2012 by irridium
wait, they expect drivers to stop for that homely thing in the crosswalk?

It's funny but when comparing the two the first sign is happy, makes me think of a nice sunny day, the other dreary, cloudy and dull. Such a shame....

21:26 February 22, 2012 by BillyB
ageist and discriminatory!

Why shouldn't younger women have their image on the signs?

Sweden has a diversity of female forms, they are not all ugly old dull crones, how dare they discriminate against the hot chicks.

PC gone mad!

The one on the left must be one of the "hot" nurses that the Stockholm Southern General hospital is looking for. This affair is oh so Swedish.

Uppsala, you should spend that money cleaning up the trash floating on top of the "tourist" area in front of the cathedral - you know, the one with all the waterfront restaurants and shops!!!!

13:48 February 23, 2012 by SimonDMontfort
If there is such a blather about a human figure on a road sign (which many drivers here ignore anyway) why not just depict 'matchstick figures' instead?

Surely that couldn't be confusing?
19:36 February 23, 2012 by Bjovulf
Only in Sweden ;-)

Why not save the money and give her a burka or a niqab

on straight away to make her haram to you know who?
03:36 February 24, 2012 by Marc the Texan
The figure on the sign looks as if it was transformed from being a Swedish woman into an Asian woman. I'm taking about the hairstyle. Look at the hair;)

Gå Fru Gårman gå!

shame she is so frisky she walked clean away Miss Go-man has gone!

Who do I contact to obtain one for my place (they are not so PC here)

I vote that they roll out the "indecent" ones everywhere show some class Sweden !

Being politically correct will kill us all before too long. Just plain silly.
22:22 February 24, 2012 by bjorkon
Seriously is the money that matters here. People have to work to pay for this.

But someone could start a tradition like "the annual burning of the goat" by fixing the new signs back to the current design with some black marker pens every time they try to change it.. That would be funny eller?
03:17 February 25, 2012 by schmuck281
I suggest that Uppsala try to profit from this by selling the offending signs on e-bay. I'm sure there are a lot of people that would like to have a sign that was banned in Sweden for being to sexually explicit.
18:35 February 25, 2012 by Emerentia
The head of the first one is out of proportion, it looks like a fiveyearold with a padded bra.
21:36 February 25, 2012 by dizzymoe33
Why not use a "stick figure" instead and this solves all the problems no perky breasts and short skirts and no picture of a man either so there is no longer any issue from all sides!!
05:32 February 27, 2012 by JohnBrianShannon
Mystery solved.

I've always wondered why cars driving through Uppsala had fogged-up windows!

(Too much heavy breathing from the "hot" Fru Gårman crossing signs).

För varmt! ;-)

Thank goodness! For a minute I thought I was in the Red Light District. ;)

@ dizzymoe33

A stick figure would be seen as Twiggy, which many women would object to.
07:11 March 4, 2012 by mikewhite
The 'perky' girl looks as if she has come from the 1960s.

Why not raise some funds for a good cause, and have a raffle for the honour to have your silhouette on the sign. 50 kr per entry.
22:54 March 20, 2012 by albert1974
yes, original swedish women should rather have hair under her arms. they should be definitively depicted on the road signs.
