Patient dies after being hit by hospital door

A patient exiting a Stockholm-area hospital has died after slamming into an automatic door.

The patient, whose gender has not been revealed, was leaving Danderyd Hospital north of Stockholm after a follow-up visit when the person was knocked backwards after crashing into a windowless automatic door.

The patient’s head then hit the reception desk, dropping the patient to the floor and leaving the person bloody and unconscious.

The automatic door was reportedly set off by someone who was on their way into the hospital, and then hit the patient who was not expecting the door to move.

Even though there was immediate care at hand, doctors reported that the patient's injuries were so serious that the person eventually died in hospital, despite initially showing signs of improvement.

The incident was reported to the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) according to Lex Maria, the informal name for regulations governing the reporting of injuries or incidents in the Swedish health care system.

Following the accident, the door was outfitted with a window allowing visitors to see one another before the door is activated, in the hope of preventing similar incidents.

Very ironic! Killed by a door in an hospital in a 1st world country. That door must be moving at the speed of a bullet

Survival of the fittest. Darwinian selection in action. If a person is not agile enough to escape the "Doors of Death," they do not deserve to live.

Gotta love socialized medicine.

@krrodman I see, you're a Nazi.

A door? Are you sure that it was not a doctor hitting the poor it? I write "it" because, as usual, TL writes that the gender of the dead person is unknown. Perhaps it was a "hen".

That's one vicious door.

@JohnnyEnglish.

Lighten up.

By the way, automatic doors now come with a sensor to prevent them from opening if a person is within range of the swinging doors - rather like the sensor on an elevator door to prevent a person from getting trapped or crushed by the closing door. Any idea when Sweden might get them?

This being Sweden nobody is to blame or responsible for what happened.

HEADLINE: Man dies after being hit by hospital door

FIRST PARAGRAPH: The patient, whose gender has not been revealed....

i thought that is exactly what the headline did.. reveal the gender

Insect. When is a man not a man.

The door that can be opened by pressing the long button are really dangerous if they are not made of glass. My daughter got hit with one one the head in a public swimming pool once and the wound of her forehead was hug!

What a horrible design...my god.

Must be a swinging door. If it is one that can swing the inward direction, being windowless, no one can see that it is about to be opened automatically by someone on the other side. Ideally this kind of thing should be a pair, one in, one out. If it is, the person may have walked to the wrong one. The doors should have a big circle-slash or X painted on the wrong way facing side. A small window could also help.

Making these all glass is bad in this situation, since they could be frequently hit by a gurney. But a combination of glass and metal constructed so a gurney or cart of any size cannot impact the glass parts would be good.

there must be timers on these automatic doors showing when it is going to be released
10:34 February 23, 2012 by nolikegohome
they will probably blame a foreginer who might have had somthing to do with fitting the door.

Read the title: "MAN" dies after being hit by hospital door

and then read the article: "The patient, whose gender has not been revealed"

Wake up Local!!!!

Lets not play the blame game! Accidents happen, this has nothing to do with the slobby health care system or long waiting times in ER or immigration policies etc. One mentions the man died in ER, other mentions the foreigner who installs the door! What is going on with you?! I would like to think that they will take necessary measures to prevent that happening again to change the door or something! Lets discuss different things under different news articles. And find somewhere else to canalize your anger about everything about Sweden!

Perhaps the victim *was* a man, before getting hit by the door, and not a man afterwards.
