Sweden braces for family immigration boom

The number of people seeking permanent residency in Sweden as relatives of immigrants already in the country will increase with 45 percent to 59,500 in 2012, a number comparable to 41,000 last year according to the latest predictions from Swedish Migration Board (Migrationsverket).

The main reason behind the expected increase is a recent verdict in the Migration Court of Appeal (Migrationsöverdomstolen) which is set to make it easier to seek a residence permit for people from countries where it is difficult to produce valid identification documents.

The larger part of the rise in applications is expected to come from Somalia.

Two years ago, two precendential verdicts from the court had demanded tighter controls on ID papers for those seeking residency permits on the grounds of having relatives in Sweden.

This hit Somali applicants the hardest as there are no official authorities in Somalia to issue the kind of identification papers which could be recognized by Swedish authorities.

But in January this year, the court loosened regulations. The verdict means that if someone can confirm consanguinity through DNA-testing, there is no need to affirm the applicants' identity in any other way.

The Migration Board is therefore expecting a surge in applications from Somalia.

“Legally the verdict will increase the chances of close family members to be reunited,” said Jonas Lindgren of the agency to TT.

According to the Migration Board, there was already a large backlog of applicants who had been turned down when the court had asked for national ID papers. The rise is expected to come from Somali applicants.

“We have started to look at that group but the verdict will probably affect applicants from Afghanistan as well,” said Lindgren.

However, Lindgren is confident that the agency can cope with the rise in applications, with some help from the government.

“There is already long waiting times and there are many open cases that we are working on completing. We have therefore turned to the government and said that we are counting on needing an extra 100 million kronor ($15 million),” said Lindgren.

People only reading the headlines as usual. In fact this makes perfect sense. Contrary to popular belief Somali immigration to Sweden was in fact extremely restricted due to the fact that Swedish authorities didn't recognise Somali passports. Proving descent from DNA testing is a full-proof system - one which should have been used earlier since it's far more reliable than documentation (even from "valid" states). For all we know this could lead to a decrease in family immigration if it turns out people have lied about having relations to others to gain them residency.

It is very stupid of Sweden's government not to allow university graduate stay in Sweden and seek job here. These are well-educated, motivated, working-age and dynamic people. Not only them, but their kids in the future are also likely to be more educated ones with useful return to the society. But Sweden keeps on importing illiterate immigrants. I myself am a student in Stockholm with a high skill upon finishing my study. And I like Sweden and would have liked to stay here. But I will have to get job within a very short period of time. I have many highly educated friends who left Sweden simply because of the visa restrictions. I wish I could do something to change this rule for I really like Sweden to benefit from it. Otherwise, those with high quality education can make it anyway for themselves.

The Swedes are moving out and the Immigrants are moving in. Doesn't look like Sweden has a great future ahead.

I really do not understand. For me, moving to sweden working full time permanently in Sweden, I have to renew my residence and work permit every 2 years. Paying taxes like all others do. But yet, instead of getting PR, they are giving away PR to asylum seekers and geting welfare from the government using taxes we are paying.

Strange ideas the government has. Can they consider me as asylum seekers instead?

YES!!! More people with no education or language skills to mob the social system. The first post was correct, this is how South Africa started by importing immigrants to fill the jobs. Difference was SA needed people to fill these jobs (labor, mining, etc.), chances are the people coming to Sweden will never work.

Before people start jumping on the bandwagon, why not think for a moment why the government are keen to allow more people in? has anyone ever done any research as to why they want to make it easier for people to move to Sweden? Why did they have to use Somalia as an example?? The report reads '' The larger part of the rise in applications is expected to come from Somalia'' I think this is misleading and it leads to a backlash from Swedes, I do agree that highly skilled people should be first on the list to get jobs and migrant status or at least the types Sweden wants to attract, maybe the government are aware that there is an ageing population, they might really need more people for the future but they really need to do more than just allow immigrants to come to Sweden and leave them to their own devices, its so hard to get jobs, everyone complains, the last thing the government needs is creating more low income areas as this will lead to more social issue already be seen in parts of Sweden, instead of people just ranting blindly, maybe they need to investigate deeply why the government has taken up this position, they might uncover a few things or 2, I believe this is the case!!

@Djmarko Sweden do need more population as Canada. But what does Canada do. Organizes exams in other countries (dont know exactly what kind of). And the other requirement is you should have high education and plus work experience. If you met all these requirements then welcome to live there. I have even seen ads about this in US.

How nice. Now can Muhammad Al-Shabab reunite with his family and clan and they can all get apartments in Borlange which seems to be the somali choice of town in Sweden. I feel truly priviliged when I go to work early in the morning, knowing that all the hours I put in at work really counts for something, knowing that now some somali families can sleep peacefully and don't have to worry about anything, their children and elderly are cared for and their men don't have to exhaust themselves with hard work anymore. We are truly blessed in Sweden who get to care for all these somali's, afghan's and iraqi's. They are so thankful for what we do for them and show us respect in return. And think of all new tradecrafts they bring to Sweden. Like bombmaking skills, stonethrowing, genital mutilation, how-to-hi-jack-a-boat etc. And finally we are getting some high standing culture to our barbaric country. We are so priviliged.

The last thing this country needs is more frickin' immigrants! Particularly those who do not and/or refuse to integrate. We cannot exist together without conflict.

The government has lost control over our borders during the past fifteen or so years. This has resulted in immigration on a scale that is placing huge strain on our public services, housing, environment, society and quality of life.

Sweden should really wake up from the nightmare it is, and has, been creating for how many years now? It will be an interesting place in 5-10 years at the rate things are going. Let's bring in more illiterate goat herders from country X, since they seem to assimilate so well, especially in parts of Stockholm and Malmö. It seems time and time again, Swedes make a move to do something based on emotion, rather than reality, or common sense. They sure do pay a fine price to pretend to be the saviours of the wrong done, the underdogs. Probably the biggest problem is the Swedish arrogance regarding their perceived superiority over other nations, and their self-advertised (oh ya, a big customer of one of the largest American PR companies) model nation-ness. Gimme a break! But don't worry, when they realise they can't afford to educate their own (you would not believe the poor level of education at these publicly funded Uni's), not to mention those who do not even recognise or value a Western education (not that this is even available here), they will just raise taxes. I say, why not raise the surprisingly low bar found in Sweden, rather than continuing a losing battle pretending to save the world's less fortunate. Too many things need to be "brought up to standard" in this mixed up country. Geesh!

Don't understand the policy in sweden. There are thousands graduate students from all over the world every year. Lots of them want to work in sweden but they can't. Government are kicking them out of sweden but accept more refugees. I really don't understand.........

Sweden was once the land of Vikings. They would never have allowed these "refugees" in. I grew up in South Africa. We opened our borders in 1994 with disastrous consequences- we now have Nigerian drug lords, Czech criminals, Somali traders, Zimbabwean refugees, Mozambican housebreakers- and the locals hate them as they try to take away jobs, customers, and hit on local women. Four years ago, all hell broke lose here in South Africa, and the locals burnt foreigners alive!. It's gonna happen again. Sweden should learn from South Africa's mistakes. Why does such a great nation- once one of the most powerful in all of Europe allow itself to be degraded in this manner. These Somalis will NEVER integrate, trust me - I've seen it all. In Britain, where my family comes from, demographers predict that the English will become an ethnic minority in their own country by 2060! Maybe King Gustaf II Adolf needs to re-incarnate and sort out the mess. He can start by getting rid of those pathetic Swedish politicians who first destroyed the independence and authority of the Swedish monarchy in 1974, and are now hell bent on destroying the country. Dr. Neil MacGregor, PhD, told me the Swedes and Danes are among the most genetically intelligent nations on Earth. The question is will the Swedish nation still exist in one hundred years from now??

It is with deep sorrow to read that Sweden is opening the flood gates of Muslim immigrates as it wont be long before the death knell will be rung for Swedish culture. I can not understand your government representatives can be so blind to the fact of the Muslims taking over your beautiful country. They demand and get special privileges that others can not obtain. In St Paul, Minnesota, the majorite of cab drivers are Muslim Somalias who refuses to take a fare with a dog even a service dog and they will refuse a fare if they may have a bottle of wine or beer, opened or not, citing it is against their religion and they get away with it. If that is not already happening in Sweden, it won't be long before it starts.

You seem to be confused, please remember the following:

1. Somalia has far more dysfunction than you could ever hope to fix with mush-headed multi-cultural tolerance and generous welfare benefits.

2. The more you try to help (in the form of accepting refugees with virtually no hope of becoming productive citizens) the less good you actually accomplish.

3. You're hurting existent citizens who should be your first concern.

4. If you want to help Somalia ..... don't. They like their religion and culture just fine and don't think they need to change and will bring their culture of mayhem and violence to Sweden.
