Swedish execs cleared of New York sex crimes

Charges against the two Swedes suspected of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman in a New York hotel room have been dismissed.

“After conducting a thorough investigation that included but was not limited to interviewing relevant witnesses, viewing surveillance video and other hotel records and speaking extensively with the complainant we have concluded that we cannot prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt," assistant district attorney David Smith, of the Manhattan district attorney's office, said to the Betabeat newspaper.

Niklas Adalberth, 30, and Jens Saltin, 31 faced charges of allegedly attacking a 19-year-old woman from Texas at the W Hotel in Manhattan.

The men are both high-ranking executives at the Klarna e-commerce start-up.

Adalberth is the company's co-founder, while Saltin works as Klarna's Vice President of Sales in the Netherlands.

Defense attorney Andrea Zellan, who represented one of the Swedes, was delighted with the outcome.

"We have maintained from the outset that this case was based on a single, false and entirely baseless allegation that was not corroborated by any forensic, scientific, video or other witness testimony," she said to Betabeat.

Adalberth and Saltin are now planning to return to their work at Klarna, the company wrote in a statement to Betabeat.

"Our employees did nothing wrong, did not break any law and should thus never have ended up in this very unfortunate situation. We now leave this incident behind us and welcome back our employees to their central roles within the company.”

And so it turns out that they are innocent. Two self made and succesfull swedish men have been named and shamed as rapists. They will now forever be connected to this and probably never be considerd innocent.

For me it`s no problem. As long as everyone get`s the same treatment. If these two ethnic Swedes get named when accused of a crime then so should everyone else, even if they aren`t of swedish deccent. Am I wrong for thinking so?

Why isn't the woman being charge with making false claim? Women are always given the upper hand of the law and men have to prove their innocents. I'm glad I'm gay because straight men have to go though hell to get some.

Well the surveillance doesn't cover within the hotel room, so if any sexual assault took place within there, it would not be seen on camera. As well, no witnesses would see it either. I don't know enough about this, but trying to argue that those two things create doubt is illogical. Also, any forensic evidence after the rape would be gone because the girl would most likely shower.

On the other hand, it is difficult to prove that they did it too, people if any assault happened without witnesses, was not captured on camera and they wore condoms or simply touched her breasts, it would be difficult to get DNA evidence. It is difficult to prove either side.

I cannot really say which side was right. Hopefully the assault did not occur.

"I cannot really say which side was right."

Nor can anybody else. That is why the accused must go free.

The company's statement that "Our employees did nothing wrong," is mighty odd.

The only 3 people who actually know what happened were the three people in that hotel room, and one of them, the woman, claims she was sexually assaulted.

@ TheWatchman

The girl herself only claimed that her breasts had been fondled, so there was little or no DNA evidence to collect here, or that could have been showered off, as you suggest.

The DA said there was no case that could be made, after he talked to many people and viewed hotel surveillance video. In other words her story likely contains one or more inconsistencies.

For example she may have claimed that she was physically dragged and forced into the hotel room, when the video actually showed that she jovially walked into the room, or the videa may show that she never even entered the room at all.

If she starts lying to the DA, then her credibility is lost, and then the case is lost, even if there was some degree of inappropriate behaviour that occured within the room.
