Spring on the way to Sweden: expert

Spring has arrived at last to Sweden's southern-most region Skåne, and other areas of the country are awakening as well, with such signs of spring as startled butterflies and the yearnful cooing of hormonal pigeons, according to the Swedish Museum of Natural History (Naturhistoriska riksmuseet).

"The pigeons have even begun cooing and devoting themselves to flight displays. They're full to the brim with hormones," said Lars-Åke Janzon, biologist at the Museum of Natural History in Stockholm to news agency TT.

The technical definition of spring requires the date passing February 15, and an above-zero average temperature for at least a week.

The long wait for spring may now be nearing its end.

Signs of spring are being reported from around the country to Janzon, and he confirmed to TT that he has seen several signs himself.

Among budding plants, flowering hazel, winter aconite and snow drops are all jostling to be first in line to sprout out of the soil.

"It's always good to be first, because then they can bloom longer. They're bulbs, and therefore aren't dependent on pollination," Janzon told TT.

Another hopeful sign that winter may be on its way out is the arrival of the first migratory birds, back from their southernly sojourn. Wood pigeons, Whooper swans and pigeons have all started returning to Sweden.

Janzon also noted that our own moods are affected by the sun. Much fewer signs of spring are reported on overcast days.

In the category temporary spring guests, there is also tortoiseshell, peacock and brimstone butterflies, who often awaken at this time of year, even though it's a little early. When the sun shines, they warm up and can't get back to sleep.

And although Swedish meteorological institute SMHI doesn't offer any long-term forecasts, a glimpse at predictions from American weather institute WSI and Norwegian meteorological institute hints that we may be in for a warmer spring than usual.

Long-term forecasts from these institutes indicate that between March and May, the temperature in Scandinavia will be between 0.5 and 1 degree Celsius warmer than normal.

Over at last, the long wait??? It's been a very short and not that cold or snowy winter in the south. Snow and proper frost didn't come until less than 2 months ago. It was at one point looking like a green winter for many. Shouldn't the article really refer to how short winter was?
13:27 February 26, 2012 by skatty
Yes Spring; the butterflies and hormonal pigeons in Skåne and elsewhere!

Now, count the days from today to mid-March, and you'll get snow in few weeks, so much snow that the butterflies will disappear.

The spring will come in mid-April and last for a month, then in two weeks the short summer start.

This story happens every year; and every year, Swedes consider that their spring is in March like most of the Europe. All because to feel more European, even though the country is in the North Pole!

Here in the east of SCOTLAND my dwarf iris and crocus have been blooming for about twelve days now.The temperature has been slightly warmer and the sunshine is lasting well into the day.Although they are a welcome sight they are all to early. I guess another sign that global warming is increasing. Enjoy it while you can we may be in for a shock.

I took a walk in the sunshine around the garden here in Linköping. Now the snow has all gone, the snowdrops are flowering, the crocus and daffodils are pushing up. The fruit trees are all budding and 3 butterflies have woken up in the house. I was sitting in my uterum behind the glass in beautiful sunshine and was sweating in the 28C temperature.

This time last year, it was -20 ansd we still had a metre of snow lying until the end of March. This year we have had 6cm and it only lasted a week.

Spring and summer are beatifull in Sweden. When they arrive swedes, women and girls, show themselves as they really are: gorgeous. Swedish landscape is beatifull too, but female landscape was much more interesting to see.

@ Rick Methven

You see, weather rapport on Internet say something else, linköping is not more than 3C.

http://www.accuweather.com/en/se/linkoping/314359/current-weather/314359

I suppose you are looking to Fahrenheit instead of centigrade, or your uterum has some kind of warming element, or the glass of the uterum is very tick.

About the fruit trees; sorry, but soon, it's going to freeze again!

About the three butterflies, that might survive couple of days; poor butterflies.

Your imagination has been adoptable to a Swedish way of looking to the seasons.

@skatty

Seems you can read English just as good as you write it.

I wrote "I was sitting in my uterum behind the glass in beautiful sunshine and was sweating in the 28C temperature"

The outside temperature was actually +4.4C as registered on my weather station

The glass in my uterum is not very "tick" just 4mm thick but in full sunshine with door and windows closed, enclosed space gets warm very quickly, FACT of thermodynamics, without my imagination being 'adoptable' whatever that means. LOL

Yes; LOL, you should write something as an answer after all!

We have an old persons incubator on our house. Even when outside is below zero, at this time of year, the sun can push it up into double figures. That's with a drafty door and 100 yr old glass.

Either way, too warm too soon. I have forest work still to do, will probably end in tears for fruit trees too. Chance yet though, in 2008 we got half a metre of snow in March.

I noticed snowdrops blooming in our garden yesterday. Made me feel quite happy to know spring is on the way, even though I do love the snow!
