Bildt wants Sweden to be 'world power': WikiLeaks

Foreign minister Carl Bildt believes Sweden should be a “world power” and once called Russian prime minister Vladmir Putin a “chetnik”, according to internal emails from a US security firm released by WikiLeaks on Monday.

The details are included in a September 2009 email exchange between employees of Strategic Forecasting, Inc., a US security consulting company commonly known as Stratfor and are attributed to a Swedish member of the European Parliament referred to only as “SW501”.

According to the report, SW501 is a “very well connected” Swedish MEP with “extremely close links” to Bildt.

“Bildt believes that Sweden should become a world power,” Stratfor's Marko Papic wrote in the message entitled “INSIGHT - SWEDEN: Carl Bildt”.

In addition, the report claims that Bildt has a “very rocky” relationship with Swedish prime minister Fredrik Reinfeldt dating back to the days when Bildt was prime minister and Reinfeldt was head of the Moderate Party's youth organization.

According to the Stratfor report, Bildt is also “very critical” of Russia, having at one point called Putin a “chetnik”, a term used to refer to ultra-nationalist Serbs.

Bildt was reportedly also “at odds” with French president Nicolas Sarkozy over a dispute over French maneuvering related to Sweden's presidency of the EU in 2009.

The unnamed Swedish MEP explained as well that Sweden views EU enlargement as a way to “break the German-Frenc [sic] stranglehold on the EU”, according to the Stratfor report.

Bildt's work on the Balkans prompted him to conclude that "he does not like Croats and Albanians," according to the report.

Bildt spokesperson Anna Charlotta Johansson told The Local referred to the details in the emails as "hearsay".

"I think we'll do what we normally do in these circumstances which is refrain from commenting. This is information from a third part," she told The Local on Monday.

In addition to an array of alleged foreign policy insights, the email also included several personal details about Bildt, including how tall he is, his alleged brain power and the fact that his wife Anna Maria Corazza Bildt is "apparently Italian and does not speak really good Swedish

Later on Monday, Bildt used his official Twitter account to brush off the significance of the email.

"Wikileaks released obscure email saying I'm "super tall, has photographic memory and is very smart". Isn't this slightly ridiculous?" he wrote on his Twitter account.

The email exchange is one of an estimated five million Stratfor emails released by WikiLeaks on Monday in what the whisteblower website is calling “The Global Intelligence Files”.

The emails are dated between July 2004 and December 2011 and, according to WikiLeaks, “reveal the inner workings” of the Texas-headquartered global intelligence firm, which provides analytic reports to a number of major corporations and US government agencies.

The release comes just days after Swedish tabloid Expressen reported that WikiLeaks was planning a “smear campaign” against Sweden in an attempt to prevent the country from eventually extraditing founder Julian Assange to the United States.

Assange is currently in the UK in the last throes of an extended legal battle to avoid extradition to Sweden to face questioning over sex crimes allegations.

And? Doesn't every country in the world want to be a world power?
10:50 February 27, 2012 by isenhand
"Sweden should be a "world power" "

To do that, Sweden would need a decent military. It will take quite a bit of effort and finances to do that! Something I don't think Sweden has the will power to do.
11:11 February 27, 2012 by kiaat
What does world power mean here? Economic? Political? Both? At 10 million it would be unreasonable to imagine Sweden as anything more than what it is today: a clever "behind the scenes" influencer. Bildt is a funny man... he seems to have illusions of grandeur and bless him for trying... but I just can not seem to take him seriously with his tweeting and press releases, etc. All huff and puff. I say they should exchange him for someone else fast .... before damage is done.
11:25 February 27, 2012 by Opinionfool
We learn other things about Bildt from that one "INSIGHT" email about him. He is tall and married to an MEP representing Sweden who doesn't speak Swedish very well. His wife is Italian and he wants to break the Franco-German control of the EU. (Didn't Berlusconi also want to break that control too.) He has a photographic memory. He is very intelligent, which obvious to anyone who knows his educational background or read anything he has written. Wow such an expose. All that could be gleaned from reading Bildt's WikiPedia entry instead.

In fact quite a lot of this email reads exactly like the WIkiPedia entry.Including copying of some very obvious grammatical errors. (The version of the WikiPedia entry I read pre-dates the release of the email but that's no guarantee of precedence.) The email's content is pretty much the same as for the US Embassary Cables pretty much information in the public domain already or conjecture based upon it. If this is all that WikiLeaks has on Bildt then I don't think the smear is very thick. There might be gems lurking in other emails about other people but on the strength of this one there ain't much to fret over for Bildt.

I wonder who the "well connected" and "extremely close" Swedish MEP is?
11:33 February 27, 2012 by RobinHood
Is that it? Oh!

If I was Putin, or an Albanian, I might be slightly cheesed off, but really? This is neither a smear nor an exposé. It's boring!
12:57 February 27, 2012 by Opinionfool
The Swedish/Bildt aspect is all probably a plot by Bildt himself. No that imbues his idea with a certain gravitas. He's indulging in a marketing campaign of Carl Bildt. Probably feels there hasn't been enough press and media coverage of Carl Bildt AB so he's bigging this up to make himself look important. Whereas all he's done is provide WikiLeaks with some nice free publicity for their latest release; their funds being blocked by MasterCard, Visa and the rest.

And this man represents SWEDEN !!!!. High time SWEDEN replaced him before he does more damage.

Once again, Wikileaks "revelations" are no news.

Thank you Wikileaks for your tireless efforts to reveal the obvious.

@godnatt

In Bildt's case you're probably correct in your assessment but you are criticising the wrong entity. Bildt has built this up into a Wikileaks are going to smear me and Sweden to defend Assange. Whereas now, with the single email available, Bildt has been shown to be insignificant. He's been blowing smoke all along.

However, Wikileaks' release of all this material highlights the duplicity and hypocrisy endemic in the private intelligence world. Paying officials for access to government collected intelligence so that Stratford can then sell it on to other non-government people. The English are finding out that a similar situation has been happening with Rupert Murdoch's News International paying police officiers and government emplotyees for information that the press should never have access to. This is the value of Wikileaks; it keeps them all honest. And why should Stratfor have this information anyway; it wasn't theirs to have and hide in the first place.

Assange is a clown. He'd say and claim ANYTHING to avoid standing trial for the rapes. Oh, sorry, I of course mean the uniquely Swedish crime of "surprise sex", which carries a fine of $715.

Yeah, the clown actually claimed that:

http://www.aolnews.com/2010/12/02/sex-by-surprise-at-heart-of-assange-criminal-probe/

Wikileaks needs to drop the clown, it's too important to go down with him.

I think the reality is Carl Bildt believes Carl Bildt should be a World Power.

You'd have to look far and wide in Sweden to find a man with a higher sense of his own self worth than Mr Bildt.
23:29 February 27, 2012 by Rebel
Sweden a world power? More people ride the Moscow Metro every day than live in Sweden. If Sweden wants to be a world power they need to have at least three generations of every woman here have seven babies and the economy must be more in line with what Ron Paul promotes than Karl Marx.
05:09 February 28, 2012 by faisy07
for becoming a world power, a dream every nation has a right to see and it may come true, Sweden needs to develop and improve multi national culture like USA , UK etc develop communication language like English removes the restrains from jobs for foreigners and welcomes the talent from whole world as a peace loving country Sweden has a more chance to be a world power is made by a good economy and strategy not by number of population ,,,,,,

Pretty humdrum stuff. If this is the kind of material Wikileaks are seeking to 'smear' Carl Bildt with, they should be looking instead at his involvement with Lundin Oil
07:28 February 28, 2012 by mibrooks27
News flash! Sweden already is a world power. By example, Sweden leads the world as one of the most honest, decent, democratic societies in the world. If the rest of the world emulated half of the good ideas that Sweden has come up with, like our healthcare system, protections for domestic jobs and businesses, our tax laws, it would be better off.
08:31 February 28, 2012 by Luke R D
@mibrooks 27

Man, have you been duped! Do a bit of research about Sweden's involvement on the world stage behind the scenes. You'll find they actually ARE a world power, though perhaps not quite for the reasons outlined in your post. It's time to wake up, people. Remember?
11:49 February 28, 2012 by Opinionfool
@SimonDMontfort

The smearage is not of Carl Bildt and Sweden by WikiLeaks but rather by Carl Bildt. Unless Bildt knows there's a 'smoking gun' in the Stratfor emails the smear campaign he thinks to be there is microscopically thin.

But his involvement raises the question of how Bildt knew what was in there in the first place. Wikileaks have announced no media partner in Sweden for this material. Makes me wonder if Bildt requested intelligence of himself from Stratfor. Or perhaps he's afraid that this private intelligence company's view of him and Sweden is 'irrelevant', so has setup a straw man he can blame.
12:12 February 28, 2012 by Marc the Texan
I would think that in politically correct Sweden, this would be enough to cost him his job.

Wikileaks doing its best to help Assange and prevent his extradition. Looking after his interests seems paramount, no matter what.

Carl Bildt needs a shrink. Besides his "delirium tremens" that needs to be treated with Benzodiazepines, he is does not know what he wants and he has never known that. In the case of Turkey, for example, he wants a non European country to join the European Union only to prevent Turkey to be closer to Russia. Do not believe me? Well: Please read:

"But where I profoundly disagree is his (Nikolas Sarkozy) call for the suspension of membership negotiations with Turkey. He wants to restrict membership to countries on the continent of Europe, although it's not clear if he wants to expell Cyprus with its position off the coast of Lebanon."

The above was written by super intelligent Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden, Carl Bildt, on September 10, 2006. In plain words, Bildt has wanted all the time that a non European country should be a member of the European Union, because, as he says in another part of his blog "

"And it's highly likely that a Turkey rejected by Europe will move towards more of a relationship with a Russia that will then have new geostrategic opportunities, also in blocking part of the energy diversification of Europe"

And now he wants Sweden to be a super power. What a jerk.

Honest and decent?Democratic? What part of Sweden do you not live in? You have a system reminiscent of 1950s Communism. Democracy here is overidden by the Socialist Government. If half the world emulated Sweden, it'd be a depressing world indeed. Sweden "borrowed" its social ideas from other countries..The protection laws are a hindrance for any start up company. Before you even get started your in for the tune of 100,000.. As for your criminal mafia style tax laws. The less said the better....
10:34 February 29, 2012 by OUIJA
The only ones who have not digged that they live in a communist country are the Swedes. Even Putin classified Sweden as a "dictatorship" when Roberta Alenius, press secretary for Fredrik Reinfeldt, tried to stop him from answering a question he (Putin) had requested already 3 times to a reporter from the Mexican television network TVAzteca at the end of a press conference held on Abril 26, 2011, with Fredrik Reinfeldt. If you Google "Putin dissar Reinfeldt" you will watch, in barely 7 seconds, the reaction of the Russian Zar to the "freedom of press" atmosphere that day.

I fully agree with the one who wrote that Bildt would like Bildt to be a "world power", but his limitations will keep him only being "a small dog who thinks of himself as a big dog", but still nothing but a dog.
21:24 February 29, 2012 by sgt_doom
So that's why Thomas Bodström moved to right outside Langley, VA, USA (CIA headquarters, in fact, the entire zip code is theirs).

And all this time I thought it was just to protect Bildt, when it finally emerges as to his culpability involving those Sudanese massacres when Bildt was a director at Lundin Petroleum --- but then that's what being a world power is all about!
09:01 March 1, 2012 by nolikegohome
what is wrong with Sweden wanting to be a world power? It would be great if Sweden can become a leading world power, it is a country which has no real enemies it has always been fair in its internationla politics sweden is a leading peace maker swedes r respected all over the world ( much much more than americans brits russians arabs and jews etc). I say most welcome to sweden. Let them lead the world and i am sure there will be less wars and more freedom for everyone including women.

World power? Oh yeah, that will happen when pigs learn to fly.
00:58 March 3, 2012 by Jeff10
Gosh,to be a world power, Sweden will need a few more folks. Are Swedish women of child-bearing years ready to produce five or six children?
03:06 March 3, 2012 by schmuck281
What's the problem? Putin IS a "cheka" which is even worse than a chetnik.

And how can you say that Sweden is not a world power. Have you seen "Mama Mia?" Other countries might have bombs and missiles but Sweden has ABBA!
