Suspects planned to 'kill as many as possible'

Four men from Sweden were formally charged in Denmark on Friday for planning a suspected terrorist attack against Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten in Copenhagen in December 2010.

The men have been charged with one count of terror crimes and two counts of violating weapons laws.

Three of the men, Munir Awad, Omar Abdalla and Mounir Dhahri were arrested in Copenhagen on December 29th, 2010.

The men were based in Sweden and had travelled over to Denmark by car the night they were arrested.

A fourth, Sahbi Zalouti, was later apprehended by police in Sweden. He was subsequently extradited to Denmark.

The four men, all of whom resided in Sweden, are suspected of preparing what Danish security service PET called a plan to "kill as many people as possible" in an assault on the Copenhagen offices of the Jyllands-Posten daily.

Jyllands-Posten published a dozen cartoons in 2005 of the Prophet Muhammad that triggered violent and sometimes deadly protests around the world.

According to the indictment, prosecutors are seeking prison terms for all the men and calling for them to be deported from Denmark as well as slapped with travel restrictions that would prevent them from entering the country again in the future.

Danish investigators allege the planning for the attack took place at a meeting "in Stockholm in Sweden as well as in other locations".

Awad, Abdalla and Dhahri traveled from Sweden to Denmark by car during the evening of December 29th.

They then met in an apartment in the Herlev neighbourhood near the Danish capital to discuss how they would attack the newspaper.

In a joint prayer, one of the men said, "When the unfaithful are gathered, tie them up and cut their throats," according to PET.

When Danish police arrested the men, they found a machine gun in the men's rented Toyota Avensis, as well as a clip with 34 live 9-mm rounds, a silencer, and 36 additional bullets of the same caliber.

In the apartment, police found a pistol with a magazine containing 15 live rounds as well as 37 additional bullets.

Police also found and confiscated $20,000 in cash as well as plastic cable ties that could be used to bind people's hands.

A spokesperson for PET told TT on Friday the agency had no further comment on the investigation.

Swedish terror expert Magnus Ranstorp praised the efforts of PET and Swedish security service Säpo in tracking the planning of the attack as well as the men's trip to Denmark.

He speculated that Danish prosecutors have a great deal of evidence stemming from wiretaps and other electronic surveillance gathered by the Danish and Swedish intelligence agencies.

"In addition, the confiscated plastic cable ties may play a prominent role in the presentation of evidence when it comes to showing that they intended to take people prisoner," Ranstorp told TT.

The trial of the four men is expected to start in April.

this is no joke, people should take it seriously...

They are 'from Sweden' and the article says that they may face deportation. Does mean back to Sweden? And once here, is it: more jail time, or freedom?

Never clear to me why incompetence (being caught before creating the blood bath) should land terrorists a vastly shorter jail term than if they succeed in filling up a city's entire supply of body bags with the corpses of innocent victims.

There should be a legal category called 'conspiracy to commit crimes against hummanity', which should have these 4 locked up in the Hague forever. I hear Milosovic's cell has been vacant for awhile now.

Slash, you must realise that these poor misunderstood people need your empathy for what they do. Excuse me while I vomit, you don't have gallows weither do you in Sweden, more's the pity.

The headlines had me a little bewildered with Swedes planning to "kill as many as possible." That is, until I got to the names of the suspects.

4 frontal lobotomy's are due - seriously, then deport back to 'native/ birthplace' country....

just bury them alive in saudi arabia and wait for them to convert into petroleum products that future generations can use to power their SpaceCar or personal robot maid.

Munir Awad, Omar Abdalla and Mounir Dhahri all traditional Swedish names I see. How long before the government bans releasing pictures and names of people? Like they band ethnic profiling in crimes. For example non western immigrant males are responsible for 90% of violent rapes in Norway (white native women mostly the victims) but in Sweden there isn't a problem. Either the government are doing a great job controlling the crime or a great job covering it up?

Lets also remember that victims of crime are real people with real families & being violently raped will seriously effect the victim and there families and there ability to have a relationship for the rest of there lives. All things the lefties seem to forget.

I appreciate the Local actually saying their names. It is actually a huge step to changing this country for the better. Whoever wrote this article, I give you credit.

These men are not from Sweden. They are terrorists taking advantage of Sweden who generously gave them a safe home, and used it as a base to murder Europeans. Would you consider the fleas on the elk roaming Sweden's wilds citizens too? I mean, they are living in Sweden.

No wonder Denmark is reintroducing border security.

I have seen Muslim immigrants even paying money "Zakat" for Imams in Sweden. They remain in the same thinking frame work as if they were living in "Baghdad" or "Pishavar". One thing that I can blame is the Swedish TV, which has shown me how to cook tons of food (do you see more fat people on streets these days?), but I have never seen them broadcasting a discussion or polite criticism of religion. An interview with "Richard Dowkins" would be a good start.

other day i found out one of my classmates of sfi attempted killing his ex wife and her bf, he appeared to be a harmless 50 something year old, but attacked them with a knife and almost killed both.

i dont think swedish people realizes the difference of cultures as well as some traumas some of these refugees might have experienced cannot be solved with a simple integration class. And most of the times will never be possible as these people are brainwashed for life in their ways and see no other.

sweden should really cut down a little bit on its massive import of refugees.

Meanwhile social workers shouldnt allow so much to happen until they act when it comes to bad swedish parents or bad parents overall in sweden. Ive seen services going up to complain to the parents for their child being disrespectfull and racist and all they have to say is "its not my problem"

when i was a kid we made jokes about the monarch, God, jesus, different races including caucasians (sweden vs norway etc) and there were little and few problems.

suddenly a bunch of new swedes a came in and as far as i can see things have changed dramatically in 50 years for the worse.

if you DUI in the UAE or Qatar e.g. as an expat you're out in a heartbeat. honestly i don't mind at all.
