Swedish town welcomes back deported family

The Swedish town of Ånge in northern Sweden held a welcome home celebration on Saturday for the Danielian/Arustamjan family who have returned to Sweden almost three months after being deported to Armenia.

The family was allowed to return on Friday after Susanna Danielian was offered a job in the local Ica supermarket, making them eligible for residency under the regulations for labour market migration.

"It is 11 years since you first came to Ånge. Now you have finally received your papers to say you can stay," Sten-Ove Danielsson, a local councillor, said in a speech to the hundreds gathered at Ånge sports field on Saturday, according to a report in the Sundsvalls Tidning daily.

"You can whistle when you meet the police on the street and no one can eject you from the country," he added.

The chairperson of Ånge IK sports club handed over a symbolic check for 147,000 kronor ($23,000), equating to the money donated locally to assist the family in the plight.

The enthusiasm of local residents over the family's return was captured on a blog started by friends of the boys after they had been deported.

"The feeling of meeting them again after 3 looooooong months is indescribable," friend Samuel Österlund wrote on Saturday.

"The only thing I can say now is yeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssss."

The Local reported in December that the residents of Ånge were outraged at the decision to deport the family of five after they had been part of the local community for over ten years.

The deportation of the family's three teenage sons, in the early hours of Lucia Day, caused consternation among the boys' friends at school and over a hundred residents (of around 3,000) gathered in the town square that evening to protest and to launch a campaign to reverse the decision.

The deportation however came as little surprise to the family as they had twice had applications for residency rejected and had a deportation order hanging over them since 2008.

After being deposited at the airport in Armenia the family were able to find refuge in the home of a taxi driver who took pity on them, according to a report in the Aftonbladet daily.

Smart move by Ica supermarket. Publicity ftw!

The decision to deport them was correct imo. I felt sorry for the children but it was the parents fault.

Should we really start keeping immigrants just because they've lived here for a certain amount of time

They were deported simply because they didn't lie properly. Just say communists are after you or you are MSL from middle east, it works all the time.
20:48 March 4, 2012 by silversurfer
Why even bothered to deport them when they are just brought in under different permit?!? Deportation should bear a certain period of not being allowed in again at minimum, if not indefinitely!

Also, what is up with only 3 months of wait for a permit?? when just about every other qualified professionals must wait months after months for it.. no point in mentioning for a duty at local market bringing the entire family is comical..

This is like exact repeat of that undocumented fradulent Russian maria quickly returned to Norway.. absolute nonsense,, where is the incentives for those who abide by the proper migration laws? if illegals get away with not punishment but reward???

I don't understand why does Migrationsverket discriminate asylum seekers this way? Shouldn't it be precedent for all? Is Sweden really corruptible too or in the level of a 3rd country? Why Riksdag made law honors one but dishonors another?

These Armenians are classical "asylum seekers" of all times. They always moan, lie, fake and blame to others while being dishonest and sinner only within.

@silversurfer

It took three months because the permit was based on work, not asylum seeking which I heard can take a very long time. I came on a work permit and was told it could take from 2-4 months. My papers were ready in 2, I was lucky.

Get a break y'all with negative comments. This family made its way in Sweden honorably. The only fact that a hundred people cared about them being deported proofs the family is a value to others, and thus to Sweden.

So, in the ten years before their deportation, was anybody in this family gainfully employed and paying tax, or were they just living off the Swedish taxpayer, whilst claiming they were refugees?

I trust that the ICA salary will be sufficient to support the entire family, right?
11:47 March 5, 2012 by hejsweden
They were licked by the local people and there for offered a joba @ ICA. Fair play to ICA, its not PR stunt at all.
13:01 March 5, 2012 by Greysuede
So wasn't there anyone local from Ågne to qualify for ICA supermarket job for which there's a big demand among local women and when Sweden's de-facto unemployment rate is 17% !!!
16:39 March 5, 2012 by hackie
Damn!! Too many terrible people here. Do people still have human feelings at all?
17:54 March 5, 2012 by Rod Munch
Armenia? What kind of danger could they be facing there that they would need asylum in another country?
04:38 March 6, 2012 by Kaethar
@Rod Munch: None that they could prove given that they were deported. Doesn't necessarily mean they weren't genuine asylum seekers though but for obvious reasons proof is necessary...

@Greysuede: Small towns, especially in Northern Sweden, lack a working force since all young people move away to bigger towns.

@johan rebel: You don't know anything about them. Due to them living in such a small town they were probably employed. An employer however needed to sponsor them to give them ability to stay in Sweden on work permits which is what the ICA did.
