Sweden's Kinnaman snags new RoboCop lead

Swedish dreamboat Joel Kinnaman has nabbed yet another lead in a potential Hollywood blockbuster, agreeing to play RoboCop in the MGM remake of the classic action movie.

According to the online magazine NME, director Jose Padhila was hoping for Inglorious Basterds star Michael Fassbender to play the role of the cyborg cop, but the Irish-German actor never officially entered talks to discuss starring in the movie.
Joel Kinnaman had been due to appear on the silver screen along Kit Harington as Lancelot in the Warner Brothers production of Lancelot & Arthur, but the production was halted due to a budget that was running amok, reported the paper.
Kinnaman had first caught the attention of Hollywood studios following his work in Swedish author Jens Lapidus’ thriller "Snabba Cash" (Easy Money).
Shortly after he was signed by an American agent and was cast as Detective Stephen Holding in American TV series "The Killing", which proved a hit with both critics and audiences and was recently renewed for a second season.
The Swede has previously featured in "Safe House", a thriller starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, in which Kinnaman was reunited with his "Snabba Cash" director Daniel Espinosa.
Kinnaman was cast in American thriller "The Darkest Hour", a 3D science fiction movie and also appeared in David Fincher’s US version of Stieg Larsson’s "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo".
He is the brother of Swedish actress Melinda Kinnaman who had a successful Swedish acting career before making it in Hollywood, and is bi-lingual by birth with a dual citizenship as his father is from the US.

I think film 'remakes' are not always as successful as the original. The first 'Robocop' film had a private corporation taking over policing - with catastrophic effects.
Given that several UK police forces have invited private security companies to 'bid' to take over aspects like criminal investigations, neighbourhood patrols and detaining suspects - this film remake could be of VERY topical interest.
Also, The US version of The Killing TV show was a disaster. Started very good but worse and worse each week. But Joel Kinnaman was one of the better parts of the show, so it's good to see he's moving on....
and Okie's right, The Killing was simply terrible.
