New Ipad 'useless' on Swedish 4G: report

The new Apple Ipad, unveiled on Wednesday, will not be compatible with the Swedish 4G network as it is adapted for North American 4G, which operates at different frequencies to the Swedish network

“We don’t know if the model will be sold here or not, we are trying to clarify this with Apple. If it will, then it would work with 3G and wifi, but not with 4G,” said Thomas Jönsson of Swedish-Finnish telecom giant Telia-Sonera to news agency TT.

The new Ipad will be released in Sweden on March 23rd, Apple confirmed in an email to TT, referring to an article in internet computer news site alltomac.se that states that the new Ipad would not be 4G compatible.

Apple told TT they had no more information than what had been said at the presentation of the new device.

According to Swedish telecom news site Telekomnyheterna, it would seem as if there is no version of the new Ipad that will work on the European 4G networks.

The new Ipad uses frequencies 700 and 2,100 megahertz, frequencies which in Sweden and in large parts of Europe are exclusive to 3G.

The first ipad was released in April 2010 and the second version was presented by Apple founder Steve Jobs in 2011.

Because this problem is very easy to fix, it will be fixed. My guess that it will take less than 30 days.
09:10 March 9, 2012 by curious_1
Looks like Apple needs to search harder to find some "geniuses" in Sweden... this problem could easily have been avoided.
09:13 March 9, 2012 by riose
@eltechno And I guess Apple will charge only 500:- to do so.
10:12 March 9, 2012 by skogsbo
Any decent r and d dept would test a product in the early stage to fix these problems, apples days are numbered anyway, they just keep reinventing the same thing, its like version 4 of wheel!

It's not such a big deal. The vast majority only use WiFi on the iPads.
12:58 March 9, 2012 by azimov
Don't buy one. By the time the sort out the teething problems on this device, they will be ready to release another one. These companies rely on selling the same product over and over again to the mugs who just can't live without them.

I dont understand why counties dont universally reserve frequencies when a new technology comes out. When the original 3G came out there must be a governing body who had informed communication companies in counties of which frequencies were required, and in doing so, allocate extra blocks to future technologies so that this problem wouldnt happen. Why is europe using 700 and 2,100 ? why didnt europe follow suit and use the same 3G freqencies as US?
14:16 March 9, 2012 by philster61
This is already known. 4G only works on Verizon and AT and T... Its also on Apples website...

It's being released in Australia on the 15th with an incompatible 4G frequency. Don't hold your breath for it to be changed any time soon, until Apple's engineers realise that they are only selling in the US and Canada!

"Why is europe using 700 and 2,100 ? why didnt europe follow suit and use the same 3G freqencies as US? "

Because Europe was before the US with 3 G, so it is the USA who should have followed Europe. It's funny much of the technology is invented in the USA but Europe usually implements it before the USA.

a classic 'we are america and want to do things different than the other 8000 countries on the planet'.

we have seen this with:

electricty - plugs and current/voltage

measurement systems

mobile phone networks

some things just never change. too bad.

Apple didn't make any mistakes, it just designed a US only version of the iPad and hopes to offload it on the rest of the world.

As the previous post suggests, the LTE specs were designed in Europe with support from the whole world as a world wide standard.

The US has always been out of step when it comes to spectrum allocation, with one exception Clearwire. When Clearwire launches LTE on its 2.5GHz spectrum it will be compatible with Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, Russia, etc.

Watch Clearwire.

@BackpackerKev: Its all about what becomes a standard! the more the companies adopt certain thing, the more likely it will become a universal standard. But I guess for Apple or Sony (the cheaper Apple I'd say), universal standards doesnt mean anything

As a user of ipad2 i can say that is a trendy gadget but Useless, at the end wi-fi, 3G, 4G is the same useless gadget if you want to use as a professional tool.
08:45 March 12, 2012 by skogsbo
gpa, you are comparing the ipad to the fashion industry, chalk and cheese, I'm afraid. There are only so many ways you can surf the internet or watch a movie. The ipad can be the fastest in the world, but everyone knows the restricting factor is connection speed, so in Europe it won't be any quicker than the previous model. If screen quality is that critical then you'll be watching the movie on your bigger screen at home.

Ipads are a useful gadget and that's all, their function can be worked around with other product like smart phones that perform other functions too. Apple seriously needs some new ideas.

Liquid Monkey, Europe was using the mile etc. long before the US (about 2000yrs), it comes from the Romans, 1 mile = 1000 double paces when marching (milli etc.) Not sure how the Swedish mile became 10km though!!

We have 3 iPads in my family. Bought a HDMI adapter to play movies (SEK450) on the TV which Apple assured me would work with all Apps. Now I discover that "my TV is not an authorized device" and won't play iTune purchased movies on the family TV. Now the Apple store tell me the only way to show iTune movies is using AppleTV (SEK1100). No refund for the useless HDMI connector.

Why do people put up with this nonsense? If I purchased a movie legally I should be able to play it on my TV.

Sweden is a rounding error compared to the big markets that the iPad's 4G radios will work with.
