Pirate Bay to launch fleet of 'aerial server drones'

Swedish file sharing site The Pirate Bay has said it wants to launch its servers into the skies using GPS-controlled drone aircraft in a bid to avoid further crackdowns on illegal file sharing.

"With the development of GPS controlled drones, far-reaching cheap radio equipment and tiny new computers like the Raspberry Pi, we're going to experiment with sending out some small drones that will float some kilometers up in the air," read a recent post on the Swedish file sharing site's official blog.

"This way our machines will have to be shut down with aeroplanes in order to shut down the system. A real act of war."

While The Pirate Bay admitted it is "just starting" to look into the possibility of keeping its servers airborne, the group emphasized that "we can't limit ourselves to hosting things just on land anymore".

"When time comes we will host in all parts of the galaxy, being true to our slogan of being the galaxy's most resilient system," according to The Pirate Bay.

Speaking about the concept with Sveriges Television (SVT), Jon Karlung, chair of Swedish internet service provider Bahnhof dismissed it as as "PR-stunt".

"It's actually a fun, old idea in line with those who previously wanted to put servers on ships sailing in international waters, air balloons, or at embassies in free ports," he told SVT.

And while the concept may sound like something from a sci-fi thriller, the technology to make flying servers operational isn't as far away as many might think.

A group called Tomorrow’s Thoughts Today is already developing drone-based servers for a project called "Electronic Countermeasures" which the group likened to an "airborne Pirate Bay" or "airborne Napster", in reference to an early music file sharing service.

“Part nomadic infrastructure and part robotic swarm, we have rebuilt and programmed the drones to broadcast their own local Wi-Fi network as a form of aerial Napster. They swarm into formation, broadcasting their pirate network, and then disperse, escaping detection, only to reform elsewhere,” the group writes to describe the concept.

Speaking with the pro-file sharing tech news website Torrent Freak, Tomorrow’s Thoughts Today's co-founder said the project is still in its early stages, but further expansion is planned.

“We are planning on scaling up the system by increasing broadcast range and building more drones for the flock," he told Torrent Freak.

"We are also building in other systems like autonomous battery change bases. We are looking for funding and backers to assist us in scaling up the system."

Fun, remember, this is not about file-sharing or copyright in the end, but that the copyright Mafia is trying to maintain control over the music and entertainment industry world wide. Places as Pirate bay and Megaupload offers an alternative channel for artist to launch themselves into the market and bring their music and entertainment to the market. The present Mafia want to remain in totalitarian control. If they have control, they can dictate prices, and their own Mega profits.

WOOT, Pirate Bay Air Force!!! Maybe this will force the US entertainment industry to lobby the Whitehouse to invade Sweden and control their airspace. They can say Pirate Bay has WMF (Weapons of Mass File-sharing)

I bet this idea won't "fly" with local air traffic control.

if you borrow a DVD or CD or Casette Tape, Vinyl or even record a song of the radio you commit copyright fraud.

So, all you Police, Law makers need to charge yourselves and slap yourself in prison with the four guys from Pirate Bay.

As a musician, how about playing live shows to earn ya money. Record companies and artists get coin every time ya track is played on any radio station all around the world.

I would think that the more people who heard your songs, would be beneficial to getting packed stadiums for your shows that you charge $100 a pop for.

Indonesia told the USA to get stuffed regarding their copy right laws, cant see why the rest of the world just doesn't follow suit....

"if you borrow a DVD or CD or Casette Tape, Vinyl or even record a song of the radio you commit copyright fraud."

Actually all of that is allowed under "fair use"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use

Keep the propaganda to a minimum ok.

@ Kreed_UK

Under fair use yes, but not under the copyright law, the fair use also allows you to download and watch something without sharing its legal according to fair use...

But does it work no, copyright law walks all over it...

Its not propaganda its fact.

Your supporting a law that actually sued a dead old woman for file sharing, and that spams to college students threats of getting sued or instant 10,000 $ pay back...

There was another case where they sued a old woman who didnt even have a computer at all, and so on so bla bla bla.

Long live the Pirates at least they arent supporting a bunch of thieves and scumbags...

How is it going to stay flying, it will run out of fuel soon.

Also an aircraft launched in Sweden flying over sweden is subject to Swedish law. Perhapes the cops should take up trap shooting as a sport and thus obtain a means of bringing the drones down.

This is incredible method choose by this file sharing site. this portal have to face some of the legal issues with the copy right laws, its a incredible step but the question is this are they going to be successful in this way.
