Princess Estelle skirts Swedish naming laws

Princess Estelle's surname, or rather lack of one, has become a matter for the Parliamentary Ombudsman (Justitieombudsmannen, JO) to look into.

A man has reported the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) for allowing Sweden's Royal Family to skirt naming laws requiring everyone to have a surname.

According to Swedish naming laws, everyone who is born in Sweden must have a last name. But for those born with blue blood, the tax agency appears prepared to bend the rules, according to an article in newspaper Dagens Juridik.

Estelle, her mother Crown Princess Victoria, and the rest of Sweden's royal family, belong to the House of Bernadotte.

However, they do not use Bernadotte as their surname, with the exception of the country's newest prince, Prince Daniel, whose full name is Daniel Westling Bernadotte.

The other members of the Royal Family simply have an asterisk (*) in the place where their surnames ought to be on the national registration form.

"This is completely based on an unwritten constitutional praxis, that the members of the royal family don't have surnames," Lars Tegenfeldt, the tax agency's legal expert on census questions, said to Dagens Juridik.

Tegenfeldt is against the special treatment of Princess Estelle.

"I've understood that it's useless to try and change this. I've also understood that the Swedish people most likely approve of the Royal Family receiving special treatment in this way. This seems to be the case for people who, dare I say it, ought to know better," Tegenfeldt said.

I'm not sure who I would rather have making the rules, the royal family or the tax authority.
15:46 March 24, 2012 by jostein
This motivates me to find a way of avoiding surnames. Who the hell do these beurocrats think they are? Isnt a personnummer enough for this scum?
17:53 March 24, 2012 by swedejane
What does it say on their passport then? I'm pretty sure if they travel abroad, at least to the US, no one really cares about the concept of "swedish royalty" (har har)...so they must have a swedish passport? Yes?
18:27 March 24, 2012 by Amber Dawn
They should add the last name "OfSweden."
19:22 March 24, 2012 by jostein
What do they do with people without surnames? Abolish them?
19:36 March 24, 2012 by johan rebel
The should just abolish the entire royal muppet show, regardless of what they are called.

Yeah this is just good reason to get rid of the monarchy now or at least hold a referendum.

I would like to know how this Tegenfeldt has come to the conclusion that "the Swedish people most likely approve of the Royal Family receiving special treatment in this way." Most people I know, both Swedish and immigrants, don't approve of anything to do with the royals. It's so middle ages.

Talk about a storm in a teacup ...

Radicals are bombing businesses, and street shooting are becoming commonplace in Sweden, but ... the royals don't have last names ... that we cannot tolerate!

Do you all think people like the queen of England uses a passport when they go abroad? I would think diplomatic rules cover all these kind of eventualities.
15:20 March 25, 2012 by gabeltoon
When a woman marries she takes the name of her husband, any children born take the father's name. At least that 's what happens in most societies.I should think that princes ESTELLE is known as ESTELLE WESTLING.

In the official line of sucession to the British throne the following are listed at places 200-203..

200. HM The King of Sweden (Carl XVI Gustaf Bernadotte , b 1946)

201. HRH The Duke of Värmland (Prince Carl Philip Bernadotte , b 1979)

202. HRH The Crown Princess of Sweden, Duchess of Västergötland (Princess Victoria Bernadotte , b 1977)

203. HRH The Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland (Princess Madeleine Bernadotte , b 1982)

How they "like" to be known in Sweden has nothing to do with their actual names. They are all officially called Bernadotte on all legal documents. When the 3 Royal Kids were under 18 Gustaf and Silvia received state child benefit for them under the name of Bernadotte.

Interesting that if terrorists killed a certain 199 people that the King of Sweden would become King of the UK. Also interesting to note that Carl Philip, although younger than Vicky is listed above her as we (the UK) are still using male preference primogeniture. (Although moves are in place to use first born primogeniture instead in which case a lot of people will be moved around on the British list).

Don't let the Swedish feminists hear you say that! LOL In Sweden people are free to choose their surnames. Women are free to keep their maiden names, their husband's surname or even a third totally unrelated name if they so wish (if their surname is considered too common). Men are likewise free to choose their wive's surnames when they marry as well. As far as I know, men taking their wives' surnames is not a modern conecpt in Sweden and has benn practiced for many centuries.

....Furthermore the King, Carl-Philip and Madeleine have all taken part in the Vasaloppet or one of the other ski races ending in Mora. (Öppet Spår, Tjejvasan). And they have always used Bernadotte as the surname.

From Wikipedia's page about the Vasaloppet...

Carl XVI Gustaf blev 1977 den förste svenske kungen att delta, under namnet Carl Bernadotte. Han kom på 5 708:e plats.

Translated: Carl Gustaf XV1 became, in 1977, the first Swedish King to take part, under the name Carl Bernadotte. He came 5,708th.

From Vasaloppets result service, online,

Tjejvasa Recreation Class, 2008.

Start Number 2 687 Madeleine Bernadotte (SWE) 02:22:19

So it seems they have used this surname themselves when signing up for sports events and legal uses.

Of course the little baby Princess will be called Estrella Bernadotte.

What's all the fuss about and why would they not use the surname Bernadotte when Madeleine HERSELF used it at the Vasaloppet in 2008?

Proof wanted? Just go to the Vasaloppet dot se page...

> Of course the little baby Princess will be called Estrella Bernadotte.

I meant Estelle, Estrella is a bag of crips.

Just trying to wind everyone up. I am not opposed to the monarchy but at the end of the day, there are not enough royals to matter. I don't care what they call each other
23:33 March 26, 2012 by Mzaliwa
In Great Britain our Royal family picked its surname Windsor at random and seems to want to keep that surname for Prince Philip's progeny.

If they followed the male line like most of her subjects we would have Elizabeth Saxe-Coburg and Gotha whose heir is Charles Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Gluecksburg.
10:22 March 27, 2012 by autonomy
Yup, the British royals ditched the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha tag at a time of *unusual political sensitivity* because it was too... erm... German. Perhaps in the light of this the Swedish royals could opt for a similar tactic, and get rid of their elitist-sounding surname in favour of something with a more down-to-earth feel. How about "Commoner" or "Chav", for example.

And Estrella is genius! "Estrella Chav" would be a great name for a little girl.
