Sweden to reject Denmark's climate plans

Published: 25 Mar 12 11:41 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/39878/20120325/

Sweden will be going against Denmark's attempt to force all EU countries to decrease energy use. According to Sweden's minister for energy, Anna-Karin Hatt, a reduced usage would damage the country's high-energy industries - mines, steel and paper.

"The most important thing is to ensure that we become more energy efficient, not that we set a maximum level for energy use," she said to Sveriges Radio (SR).

Her Danish colleague and the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (Naturskyddsföreningen) are both critical of Sweden's stance on the matter.

The energy plan, recently clubbed through in Denmark, has been saluted as historic for the country. As early as 2020, Danes will be receiving roughly half of their electric supply from wind power, according to Danish environmental minister Martin Lidegaard.

The plan is very detailed, and includes financing for phasing out oil burners, and expanding the charging station network for electric cars.

"This energy deal confirms that Denmark now has Europe's most ambitious climate policies. And now it's not just a bunch of fancy goals, but also a clear plan for the measures that will take us there," John Nordbo, head of environmental issues at organization WWF in Denmark, told news agency Ritzau.

Good for Sweden, if our industrial energy requirements exceed those of Denmark.

Sweden already pays financial penalties to the EU for not meeting aggressive CO2 emission target reductions in Stockholm, one of the cleanest million-resident cities in Europe.

Meanwhile Paris and other large cities are exempt from the same CO2 emission targets by special exemptions provided by the EU.

Good to work to reduce emissions whenever possible and where it is reasonable tod do so, but Sweden should not always be singled out for financial penalties for energy use, particularly by nations that have far less industrial activity.

Hatt and the other commentators here appear to be rather poor at mathematics.

Sustainability means consuming no more than can be sustained over an indefinite period of time into the future. This can be more or less efficient. It doesn't matter. If you consume too much, it is not sustainable, no matter how efficient it is. E.g. if there is X amount of energy available, and you have either 50% or 90% efficiency, you will use either 50% or 90% of X for useful purposes, and 50% or 10% will be wasted. But X is still the same.

Efficiency means best use of what is available as a maximum, and the maximum needs to be set to a level that can persist into the future. If you are highly efficient and the maximum sustainable level is exceeded, then the energy source will soon run out.

If Hatt doesn't understand this, she should be sacked and sent back to school.

Sweden has only 9.5 million people. China and India have 1.4 billion in each of their countries. They use more oil, coal and pollute to their hearts content. Why doesn't Denmark sort them out first instead of Sweden which uses the least.

Oh yes and they want more women in politics. I don't think so.
16:11 March 25, 2012 by Frobobbles
Only fools believe that reduced energy usage is 'good for the environment'. The logical next step for them is to try to destroy the sun, because it uses a whole lot of energy.
17:44 March 25, 2012 by ctinej
Frobobbies sounds like a good Christian fundamentalist.

The simple solution is to NOT put money first, and decrease the population, or at the worst hold it steady..

How about sterilizing all the Immigrants once they have two. Think of how much energy will be used by the next 6 to 8 kids each Immigrant will have if not put under control. The Immigrants are Ignorant, no argument there. So are my dogs and cats. I got the dogs and cat fixed! Get a clue!!!

The Malignant Breeders are destroying the planet!!! The religious fanatics who support the Malignant Breeders are doing the same.

20% better mileage is of no use when we have 200% more cars!!!

The head of Sweden's government is advised by Karl Rove.

Why is anyone surprised that he is willing to betray Sweden's legacy of being a world leader in environmental issues?
21:18 March 25, 2012 by Abe L
#4 already kind said it.

Why doesn't Denmark go after forcing countries like China, India and South America to to reduce their emissions and energy usage? Or in general have measures put in place that reduce their economic growth, which will only lead to further increase in both. And make sure Africa doesn't further develop it's industries.

A few million won't make a change on a few billion.

Well I'm glad that "Sweden" has stood up for itself in the matter. I just wish it was because they see that saving energy or limiting its use is not going to stop global warming and we are not going to bring temperatures down by using energy-saving lightbulbs. In fact, nothing will bring the temperatures down, unless we destroy the sun, just as "Frobobbles" suggested. Global warming is a cycle. More and more are becoming sceptical of what we're supposed to be doing to stop global warming, soon enough those for it will be outnumbered. It's happening slowly.

Come this Saturday, "Earth Hour", all my lights will be ON and having a 2-storey house with an extra granny-flat, that's a lot of lights. Furthermore, I'll be walking up the street and turning on the neighbours' sensor lights. There's what I think of action on climate change. Nothing but a way for the pollies to get more money and taxes from us. Wake up people.

#6 suggested sterilizing immigrants after they've had 2 children. Why limit this to immigrants?

Those with ignorant anti-science viewpoints like Radhus should be sterilized before having any children to prevent the spread of such ignorance.

it is interesting to note that by EU standards they have declared Europe 'greenest' city to be Vaxjo in Sweden, so perhaps the Danes have some catching up to do.

To assist this matter, all Danish holiday stugas should have their electricity cut off and they can bring their own fuel and denmark and candles form Denmark, for their 2nd homes, which is not a particuarly green concept.
09:25 March 26, 2012 by karex
@Abe L

Am I understanding you correctly? Now that the richer nations have more or less depleted everything, let's stop growth in the developing nations so we can continue to waste? Isn't that equivalent of stomping on whoever is already down to make sure they stay there? Isn't that also a major reason why people from these places are invading everywhere else? It doesn't solve the problem, just spreads it out to a wider area.

EVERYONE must work to reduce consumption, NO exceptions. However, I think that it is already too late. As usual, we never pay attention to warnings and only start to take action when it no longer will be sufficient.

Is it about co2 emission or the total energy consumption? If co2 is what they are after, why cap energy use? And not all countries are wind rich like Denmark. All of a sudden they forget the holy word diversity?
21:18 March 26, 2012 by Reason abd Realism
... another important point is a possible conflict of interest, in that Denmark is trying in increase sales of Vestas wind turbines.
01:48 March 27, 2012 by samwise
Exactly, Reason abd Realism, we should really look into what interest groups are behind all these fancy schemes. Let the Danes enjoy their stinky fans.

Global warming, climate change, etc. all are hoaxes. Most hard-sciences scientists reject global warming. You might start by reading yesterday's Wall Street Journal for more info about this. Or just google it.

Also, the only for-sure fact that's known about declining populations is that in all such cases, the result was poverty and eventually an end to those societies. So, don't breed in order to ensure your ethnic demise.
15:40 March 30, 2012 by james_g
Sorry, Jeff10 (#22) - you're wrong there. They're not hoaxes. Well, not exactly. BUT...Oh dear... of COURSE climate change happens! Yes, global warming is a fact; so is global cooling. They've both been facts throughout the planet's life. Bear in mind the fact that we are at present in a warmish interval within the current ice age - or maybe approaching the end of the current ice age. Earth's 'natural' ambient temperature - on the basis of historical average (and I'm not talking about a history of mere tens or hundreds of thousands of years here) - is appreciably higher than it is now. Of course mankind (it does seem to be overwhelmingly a male type thing...) should ease up on raping Mother Earth (by 'ease up' I really mean stop!), but I don't think bad science and panic generation is the way to go about the necessary persuasion. Actually, perhaps a little coercion might be in order...
17:39 March 30, 2012 by astra2thor6
Another environmental looney proposal by Denmark. If all Swedish drivers were to stop driving their cars, busses, and trucks today it would reduce total global CO2 emissions by 0.000,000,000,000,001% approx.

Agriculture produces about 18% of of the total global warming emissions, and domesticated animals produce between15-20% of global Methane emissions, more damaging than CO2. In Denmark pigs produce the most methane.

Now to really show their determination to prevent further climate change the Danish government should immediately impose a tax on pigs, as I understand that there are SIX pigs for every Danish citizens including children.
