Malmö mayor's remarks 'wrong': party head

Social Democrat head Stefan Löfven called recent "anti-Semitic" comments by Malmö mayor Ilmar Reepalu "wrong" following what Jewish leaders called a "constructive" meeting to discuss the issue on Monday.

"The comments were wrong, but I still have total confidence in him," Löfven told the Dagens Nyheter (DN) newspaper.

Sweden's Jewish leaders called the meeting "constructive", but emphasized they still lack confidence in Malmö mayor Ilmar Reepalu following his recent "anti-Semitic" remarks.

"It was a very constructive meeting," Lena Posner Körösi, chair of the Jewish Community in Stockholm (Judiska församlingen i Stockholm) told the TT news agency following the talks, which were called in the wake of comments labeled as "anti-Semitic" by Sweden's Jewish leaders.

Following the meeting, which was held on Monday at Social Democrat headquarters in Stockholm, Löfven and Posner Körösi emerged together and addressed reporters.

"We've now had a meeting between the Social Democrat party leadership and the Official Council of Swedish Jewish Communities (Judiska centralrådet i Sverige – JC) and discussed the situation in Malmö and respect for the rights of different minorities," said Löfven, according to the TT news agency.

"We've made it very clear that we are committed to our values and the ideology of people's equal value and religious freedom. I understand and respect the Jewish community's concern when they view these comments as an insult to these rights."

While Löfven expressed his continued confidence in Reepalu, he admitted that the Malmö mayor's comments were regrettable.

"I want to improve dialogue with the Jewish community in Malmö for which Ilmar Reepalu has a great deal of responsibility," he said.

"I have confidence in him, but it's clear that the statements he's made haven't been good and I've been very clear that it's unfortunately that they were viewed as anything other than what the party stands for."

At the centre of the controversy were comments by Reepalu suggesting there were "strong ties" between the Jewish community in Malmö and the Sweden Democrats, a political party with a clear anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim line which has its roots in Sweden's neo-Nazi movement.

According to Reepalu, "Sweden Democrats have infiltrated the Jewish community in order to push their hate of Muslims".

He later admitted he had “no basis” for the claims, but the comments had already sparked an angry reaction from the Jewish community, prompting a letter to Löfven from the Official Council of Swedish Jewish Communities (Judiska centralrådet i Sverige – JC) demanding action.

While Posner Körösi was pleased with the meeting, she said the onus is now on Reepalu to show he can live up to the Social Democratic values emphasized by Löfven during the meeting.

"Now it remains for Ilmar Reepalu to prove it by his words and actions. Today I don't have any confidence in him," she said.

Reepalu on Monday said he planned to contact the Jewish community in Malmö to try to figure out how his comments became misconstrued.

He admitted he doesn't always express himself that well, but remained emphatic in rejecting claims that he was anit-Semitic.

"Anti-Semitism is the worst form or racism that humanity has ever experienced," Reepalu told TT.

He said he's never held the views ascribed to him regarding alleged alliance between the Jewish community in Malmö and the far-right Sweden Democrats.

"My criticism when it comes to the meeting in the Jewish community was directed against the Sweden Democrats and their way of assigning Muslims with collective guilt, not against the Jewish community."

Ilmar Reepalu has been running things in Malmö since 1994. In that time he has ruled the city of Malmö as an absolute dictator and amazingly avoided a conviction for corruption in 2006 (the alleged bribes he received were from an "old friend" of his, so they were not considered bribes by the courts...). In the time that Dictator Reepalu has been in power, he has disparaged single mothers, unemployed immigrants along with many other groups of people including those of the Jewish faith. His buddies in big business have been winning more and more contracts while he pushes the poor out of their homes and further out of the city into ghettos where he fails to understand how his behavior has any connection to the civil resistance and sometimes violent reactions of the marginalized.

Löfven has taken the party in a completely new direction. The Social Democrat party seems now to be a party for anti semetic racists with values traditionally associated with the SD. Will we be seeing a Social Democrat / SD alliance anytime soon? They seem natural bed fellows, and their members can have a fine old time goose stepping together at Jew hating party rallies.

Hate the Jew? Vote Social Democrat. The party you can trust to put down international Jewery in the only way they understand.

I'm not sure why he has confidence in him, but this is an improvement at any rate.

@respect4all

I actually lol'd at your comment, mainly at how stupid it was. Jews are subjected to pretty unfair treatment (not by the government, but it is tolerated by the government) in Norway and Sweden, and they aren't just complaining about a few words. Reepalu isn't the only person who does, don't think it for a second.

I also like how you bring up Israel, but don't actually mention who these people who died ARE. Were they suicide bombers, were they children taught to shoot RPG's at tanks, were they armed men shooting at soldiers using children as cover or were they real civilians? Please provide more information, thank you.

for the mayor to claim an association between the SD, who have xenophobic tendencies at a minimum, and the jewish population of Malmo, when, as the mayor admits, there is no association. is clearly abusive. Since the SD have a clear dislike of non European immigrants his lie is obviously intended to stir of up tension in Malmo which will probably result in even more abuse of the local jeiwsh community.

So Spuds MacKenzie do you now understand. A complete lie that will cause trouble for the jewish community in Malmo - antisemitiic.

The mayor is a politician and probably expects that his lies will bring him more votes from Malmo's unusual electorate than he will lose from Malmo's jews - so he tells lies.

for Spuds MacKenzie

Context Spuds, context. The mayor has form. Last year, he was asked by a local newspaper for his reaction to the huge increase in violence against Jews in Malmö. The mayor said something like ... well, if Israel behaves the way is does, Jews in Malmö (his constituents), should expect to get a good kicking every now and then.... After the newspaper published this, the mayor denied saying it. The newspaper posted the recording of the interview on its website, and the mayor conceded his denial was a lie, and he had said it after all.

As Engage Brain points out, there are many more Moslems in Malmö than Jews. The mayor has done the math, and calculated that unleashing the majority Moslems against the minority Jews, with his blessing, will gain him significant Moslem popularity, and Moslem votes at the next election. A bit tough on the Jews, but whatever, right Spuds? They're only Jews right Spuds?

His latest attempt to slander the Jews of Malmö by suggesting they are infiltrated by the right-wing SD, reinforces the picture of a man tortured by old-school anti Semitism; which would be OK, for your run of the mill anti-Semitic racist posting his dirt on the Local forums, but absolutely not OK for the mayor of a major European city. The mayor, and his city are becoming increasingly isolated. Many European politicians won't be seen with him because of his repulsive views. His office is finding it increasingly difficult to book international exchange visits with other cities. Fortunately for the mayor, the Social Democrat party continue to have him as a respected member. They too have done the math, and are happy to see a few Jews get a kicking, to keep on the right side of Sweden's huge Islamic constituency. They're only Jews, right Spuds? They deserve it, right Spuds?

So far, the mayor has not been involved in any sexual impropriety.

I hope the above makes things a little clearer for you now.

Re #16, "the SD have a clear dislike of non European immigrants..."

I'm not convinced this is true. I glance through *varied* news sources and blogs, including the SD-linked Avpixlat from time-to-time. For the articles and comments I've skimmed, I've most noticed a critique of Islam, Sharia Law, and what is perceived as associated violence. Gypsies and some eastern Europeans seem linked with crime.

I saw a few negative comments once about Sikhs, but then many other commenters defended Sikhs and spoke highly of them. Buddhism seems largely respected, and people write positively about Asian peoples in Sweden. People seem to write positively about women's rights and gay rights. But I think they see the "hen" school as wasting tax money. I don't know that I've ever noticed anything negative about Jewish people.

So, I'm not sure what to think of the SD. Perhaps they can't be trusted. But I don't think it's as simple as saying they hate non-Swedes or non-Europeans.

The mayor needs to go, period! It is his fault that Malmo now is a divided city where non-muslims cannot or dare not enter the muslim section, not even the police. It is one of the worst cities in the world when it comes to violence, I bet the mayor is proud of that.

The anti jewish remarks which he utters so often is so offensive to us non-jews.
13:13 April 9, 2012 by Marc the Texan
How many free passes is this guy going to get? This is just the latest. Anti-Semitism is the only form of politically acceptable racism in Sweden. Why? He'd be done if he were referring to some other notable groups.
19:38 April 10, 2012 by Samir S. Halabi
I find some of your comments utterly offensive, which in it self creates further Jew-hatred. No Jew-hating Muslim is going to intimidate me, as I am not one of those gentle-Jews,

I fight back, as has been the case on many occassions. I have been attacked by un-educated fanatically-inspired Muslims on directives from their ignorant Clerics who see it as their duty to kill Jews. The last time I was in Sweden visiting some friends, when I was first verbaly abused, then attacked physically by three Arabs of North-African origin, I defended myself and hit one so hard that he fell against a wall injuring himself, the other two didn't realise that I was accompanied by a massive Canine

protector, Russian breed and Russian military trained especially for my requirements. Those jew-hating vermin never stood a chance in hell with that dog, if he knows that I am being attacked he acts. My only regret is that he never finished them off. I am now trying to introduce that special breed of canine to some Jewish families in Malmo as a form of protection. I was attacked by those vermin simply because they recognized me as Being Jewish.
