Breivik planned secret base on Swedish farm

Norwegian mass-murderer Anders Breivik planned to hire a Swedish country house in what police believe was to be a base for running his terrorist operations in Oslo and Utøya.

Breivik sent emails to several real estate agents and municipalities in July 2010, requesting a farmhouse in Värmland, western Sweden, according to Sveriges Television's investigative journalism programme "Uppdrag Granskning".

Värmland's proximity to Oslo has led Norwegian police to suspect the house was to be used as a secret base for terrorist operations, including the manufacture of explosives.

In the emails, Breivik specifically requested an "abandoned farmhouse" which was "isolated or desolate", explaining that he planned to spend a year or two writing a book about the stock market.

But Breivik's country house plans never came to fruition, despite him receiving one response from Christina Öster, an estate agent who said she had found a house that met with Breivik's specifications.

Öster said she had endeavoured to help despite being baffled as to why a writer would ask for a house "without electricity or running water". She eventually offered him a house near Koppom, but is now shocked at her brush with Breivik, who killed 77 people in his attacks on July 22nd 2011.

"What if he had made bombs here in Koppom, what damage they could have done," Öster told the Aftonbladet newspaper.

Breivik eventually chose a farmhouse in Åsta, in Hedmark, Norway, some 25 kilometres from the Swedish border.

Police suspect it was there he made the explosives that claimed eight lives in a car bomb attack in Norway's capital in July. Breivik then gunned down a further 69 mostly young people at a political summer camp on the island of Utøya.

His trial begins in Oslo on April 16th.

@Trowbridge H. Ford

It always happen when few things are not very frequent somewhere. So i guess this was a wakeup call for the intelligence agencies in Scandinavia. Bad would be the case when some next incident similar to breivik's takes place, then it would mean the intelligence agencies are simply sleeping!

why is he still not called terrorist ?
13:26 April 4, 2012 by cnak145
Because he is Anders Breivik not Muhammad Breivik.

Re #3, you probably need a lawyer to best answer…

Wiki uses "terrorist" to describe Breivik in the article on him (in English, Swedish, and Norwegian).

The (English) article on "terrorism" says there is no agreed upon international criminal law definition of terrorism. However, terrorism is characterized by killing in order to gain publicity for a group, cause, or individual.

Perhaps calling Breivik a terrorist might somehow authenticate that he has a "cause" vs being a "simple" insane killer. That's gonna be part of his trial, right? I just wondered about legal implications…

Under the term, "mass murder", Breivik is listed under "mass murder by individuals" and "mass murder by terrorists". Another category on the page is "mass murder by state", and perhaps this is what I myself generally associate with the term "mass murder".

"Mass murder" is defined though as the killing of four or more people during a short time period in one place. "Spree killing" is defined as the killing of four or more people during a short time (with no cooling off period) in two or more places. Breivik is listed under this definition as well.

It seems a number of terms can be used to describe Breivik. How horrible and surreal that such words exist…

Re #4, I think your point is made as well...if you google pictures for "mass murderer" and "terrorist" very different images appear.

Breivik is a terrorist for killing those children, regardless of the semantics. With that said, his cause ironically, was to save his country and it was a noble cause. I most certainly can see where he comes from, not that I condone violence towards any group. He was tired of his country being filled with people who commit almost all rapes in the country, honour killings, violence towards other groups such as Jews (who face violence because they are Jews), murders, theft, other crimes and less freedom of speech that came from this immigration.
