Sweden 'shuns' older workers: study

Despite a large share of Sweden’s senior work force en route for retirement in the next few years, Swedish companies are among the worst in the world at recruiting and keeping people over fifty in employment.

According to a study carried out by recruitment agency Manpower, only eight percent of Swedish employers have a strategy to retain older workers.

The corresponding figure in Japan is 83 percent. Sweden comes in at the very bottom of Manpower's ranking, alongside Italy and Poland.

And when it comes to recruiting workers over 50, only four percent of Swedish companies have a strategy in place, putting them second to last globally, beating only Poland.

At the top of the list is Singapore, where almost every other company has plan laid out for attracting and hiring older workers. Hong Kong and other Asian countries are also at the forefront.

One of the explanation are said to be cultural differences between the countries.

“But above all, in counties like Japan, where there is an ageing population, one must make use of the the older generations,” said Hans Makander of Manpower to news agency TT.

According to Makander, Swedes concentrate too much on younger workers.

“But the older generation is needed to move the young into the work place in a good way,” he said.

When Manpower did the same survey five years ago the results were almost identical, although the problem with the coming mass retirement is well known, said Makander.

The study was based on answers from 30,000 employers in 28 counties. The Swedish part of the survey was based on answers from 771 employers.

Interesting: if Mr Reinfeldt is serious about 'Swedes should work until age 75' where are all these older workers going to find their jobs?

The Swedish Government needs to correct this situation urgently. The young workers get their knowledge from the older workers, if there are no older workers being employed in the workforce then how the heck do you expect the younger ones to get their skills? I like the way Sweden is "one of the best" (yet again) in this survey at NOT employing older people. Congratulations Sweden.

It's probably the norm in the industrialized world at this point. In the US the great majority of workers who pass 50 and then find themselves unemployed are very likely to remain so. At all levels and slots in this job market there are too many under-employed or young educated job seekers bringing more recent college and lower wage demands with them for even those positions which come available. The funds to back new business initiatives are tight and the economics of the world (particularly the west) argue that spendable income is insufficient to support virtually any potential new ventures. At just over 60 years old and 3 years unemployed with no nibbles or avenues to pursue (and there are a LOT of us) I do not anticipate ever having the chance for meaningful work again.

There is a great need to open a bunch of Wal-marts in Sweden so all the old folks can get jobs as store greeters.
15:45 April 5, 2012 by CDRoth
Wal-mart has done away with that position.

The "over 50" crowd should strart thinking a bit out of the box. maybe take up pimping, dope dealing, armed robbery. Great hours and pay well.

i dont think comparing the asian markets is a good idea. In Asian countries, the old and experienced are considered as gold, regardless of their quality of skills. I dont know if the study was conducted in a proper research manner or not. Anyway, still Sweden is too low.

An interesting finding ; surely though there must be other factors at play that explain this? Employer resistance or negligence can only go so far into explaining lagging performance in this matter...

It doesnt help that the moronic tax agency insists on putting everyones personal details (inc dob) on the web for everyone to see.

I thought I had read another article that Sweden was great at employing older workers.... I am confused...

Maybe it was that they never get fired at their job... so they have to keep it forever.

hilarious.

although i have a great position with one of the largest oil companies in the world (outside sweden), i applied for a few jobs for fun when i was in sweden over the summer last year with negative outcome.

my resume is IMHO pretty impressive and it just shows even with documented job creation and earning capabilities they don't want to see an ugly face like mine.

it was a laughable experience in that little duck pond.
