Girlfriend-strangler given 16 years in prison

A 52-year-old man from Ystad in southern Sweden, convicted of murdering his 25-year-old girlfriend, was sentenced on Friday to 16 years in prison.

After undergoing psychiatric analysis the man was declared to be unaffected by any psychiatric illnesses, according to the TT news agency.

The man claimed in court that it “must have been someone else” who took his girlfriend’s life, as he was rendered unconcious shortly before the incident occurred.

He explained that there was a knock at the door, and that the woman went to open it. Then, the man claims he lost consciousness and didn’t wake until the arrival of the police.

However, the Ystad District Court believed that the man had deliberately strangled his girlfriend.

The man’s teenage daughter, who was in the apartment with her own one-year-old child at the time of the murder, had explained earlier that her father had tried to strangle his partner on another occasion.

The daughter also made a number of emergency text messages to her mother and her brother immediately before the murder, stating that her father was abusing his girlfriend.

The murder may have been triggered by the fact that the woman had planned to leave the man and move elsewhere.

The man was also sentenced to pay 160,000 kronor ($23,671) in damages to the family of the victim.

16 years in prison!! Im always shocked how little value the Swedish courts and goverment put on a individuals life. And he will be set free before the 16 years are up. The Swedish courts and goverment send a clear message that this womans life was not worth much at all.

16 years is a stunning amount of time for sweden. Usually the courts woul say well he intended to just choke her but we cannot determine if he really meant to kill her, so 1 year and a 50,000 Kronor fine.

16 yrs is a lot for Sweden. In the States he would be in for life or put on death row, how sick and evil is he.

Why is deportation not apart of this equation??

Is he an immigrant? If so yes, please escort him back home!

A man murders a woman and he receives 16 years in prison.

Apparently life is not worth much in Sweden.

Im amazed how everyone just jump out in conclussions in this place. ITs like the lectures are in vast mayority Sveriedemocraterna, if a girl has her throat cut is because she had no burka, if there was a crash and the whole family died it was an immigrant behind the wheel, if a man killed a woman he was def an immigrant... Sure, kill them all. The Local, news for rednecks in a bat country... I sure love it.

Re 7, I have no idea where the man in this article is from. Some people may jump to conclusions. TL prints very limited information. If you search other news sources, there is often more information, which may affect poster comments regarding immigrants. If a machete is involved, if it's a gang rape, if a man kills a woman who wants a divorce, if a man sets a woman on fire, if he attacks medical staff for examining a woman, etc., then there is a high probability that the criminal was not of Swedish culture origin.

Of course all immigrants from any region are not all whackadoodle. But politicians and MV have done a good job of importing whackadoodle, violent people. Now we all pay the price, monetarily and socially. How many people suffer and die beause politicians use healthcare funds to import, house or jail people? I guess such social division and violence promises politiicans and state media well-paid jobs for years to come.

It is more likely that the female was the immigrant and not the male........Just a likelihood not a fact

Aftonbladet names the murderer as Claes-Åke Johansson. No mention of the victim's name... Swedish prison costs around 3 000 SEK per person per day. Short sentences mean politicians have more money to finance projects which they feel are more important. Yes, life is cheap in Sweden.

Agree with some posters here that 16 years is unusually long for Sweden, while it is still short vs. many other countries.

I wonder if the daughter's story that the woman previously had to fight off a strangulation attempt was ever reported to police, and if anything was done at the time to make her life safer.

And once again I wonder why the fine is so insultingly trivial. Why not strip the vommit bag of his entire net worth, whatever that is, and divide it 2 ways: 1) victim's family, and 2) government of Sweden, who will have to pay for this scum bag's toilet paper and cable TV for the next 16 years. And if his net worth is too little to be of any use, then hard labour behind bars to pay back his debt to the family of the victim, and the state.
