Killer who dumped body in sewer gets 12 years

A man was sentenced to 12 years prison on Monday for murdering his best friend, who was found a month later in a lake in southern Sweden.

The convicted man, 27, was also ordered to pay 224,000 kronor ($32,839) in damages to the family of the deceased man, 23-year-old bus-driver Peter Ivansson.

“Peter dreamt of opening his own business with his little brother, but instead they found him in the sewer,” said the victim’s father Inge Ivansson to Expressen newspaper ahead of the verdict.

“The murderer should get a life sentence.”

He also told the paper how the trial has been unbearable at times, stating he was forced to leave the room in horror when pictures of his son’s body being removed from the lake were shown to the court.

The 27-year-old man was formally charged with murder for having strangled Ivansson in his apartment and then dumping the body in the sewer before later moving the corpse to a lake near Karlskrona, southern Sweden.

While he had confessed to parts of the crime, the man also explained that he didn't remember exactly what happened, according to the TT news agency.

Ivansson was reported missing on August 23rd last year after he failed to show up for his bus driving shift.

On that same day, the convicted murderer had written on the victim’s Facebook page “Where are you?”

Further evidence against the man was strong, as he had told his brother that he had killed Ivansson, as well as written about it in a letter and personal notes.

The browser history of the 27-year-old also revealed that he had searched the internet for information on the penalties for murder.

During the trial, the convicted man confessed that he had a mental image of a belt around his friend’s neck, and also confessed to stealing money from a cupboard in the man’s house.

Ivansson's body was found in Fabbesjön Lake in Blekinge, southern Sweden, a month after he was reported missing.

While 12 years in prison is the official ruling, the victim’s father claims that anything besides life is a much too lenient punishment.

“He took our boy away from us and we’re in perpetual mourning. Life in prison is the only alternative. He should never get to come out,” he told Expressen.

I'd hate to see what he would do to someone he didn't like.

Agree with the father. Such monsters should never come out again. Shameful.

I suspect short prison sentences are related to State rationing. So why can't we have self-sustaining prisons? With Sweden's wealth of land, prisoners can chop their own wood for heat, grow a large percentage of their own food, and knit their own sweaters, hats, and socks. Surplus wood, produce, livestock can be sold to cover overhead. Prisoners can work for their room and board, just as well as we can.

so its 12 years for murder, but the other dude got 16 for strangling his girlfriend., nope its 11 for the guy who shot a child in the face, was that 3 years for rape or just 6 months?

im so confused..

12 years for murder? Out in 6 no doubt. Sounds like the U.K....

Fully agree with #2's self sufficiency clause. Chop fire wood or freeze. Harvest your own potatoes, and cook these yourselves, or starve.

As usual (this is getting boring) he claimed to have forgotten the murder, in line with what most other murderers here say.

A key piece of information here is that the killer surfed the web before he committed the crime to confirm that his murder conviction here in violent-criminal-loving Sweden would indeed result in a relatively trivial sentence, and with only a pitiful sum to be paid as a fine to the mudered victim's family. If this web surfing item does not prove the utter lack of deterence against violent crime within the Swedish justice system, then I don't know what does.

In most states in the US, he would have gotten life. Whether he did it or not.....

Out at 39. So much for the worth of a man's life.

In the Swedish language, "justice" is synonymous with "equality". Sweden's "justice" system is indeed a tribute to equality.

"Again the swede "cleopatra complex" you so love and forgive the most viperous among you !! "

It's not so much that as disinterest in the victim (who cannot change) and horrible fascination with the criminals (who with enough love and care from Nanny Sverige) might become.... ever so slightly less violent.

If he just leaves his next victim where he killed them instead of dumping them in a lake that's progress worth celebrating! It's proof the Swedish system works!!!!

If I want to murder someone I should do it Sweden.

These prison sentences handed out by the Swedish courts are ridiculous.
23:29 April 16, 2012 by markusd
Well, obviously, his mistake was committing the crime in a country that is so hard on criminals. Twelve years for only murdering one person is a pretty tough sentence when you consider that Anders Breivik is facing 21 years for killing 77 people in Norway. That's less than three and a half months per murder. Talk about a great deal. According to BBC, the sentence 'could' be extended to life but you have to admit that it's still a pretty nice starting point. Sweden's not a bad place for killing someone but if you really want to do it right, you've got to go to Norway.

Well as we all know , there certainly isn't a price one can put on the value of a life. One clearly must say that awarding the family of the deceased 224,000 kronor ($32,839) just adds so much more insult to this horrific situation. The award to this family should have reflected what this family has lost and will never get back in volumes whether he can pay it or not . I think the judicial in Sweden is screaming out for a complete over haul. Allowing criminals to virtually walk ( 12 years ) sends the obvious message that humanity and life hold little value.
