Swedish girls' desire for beauty ops spikes

Interest among Swedish women in beauty-enhancing plastic surgery operations has ballooned dramatically in the last two years, especially among those aged 15-29, according to a new survey.

“The real change is the so called ‘light’ procedures - botox and fillers. Surgery is on the rise too but the non-surgery part of the market is positively surging,” said daily Expressen’s medicine reporter and author of a book on beauty surgery, Anna Bäsén to Sveriges Television (SVT).

A survey by market research company Sifo revealed that almost one in five women in Sweden would consider having a beauty operation, an increase by almost 40 percent in two years.

Among women in the age group 15-29, as many as one in three could imagine enhancing their looks through some form of plastic surgery, reports the broadcaster.

According to Bäsén, young people specifically have always worried about the way they look.

“The difference is that now there are all these possibilities to do something about it,” she said to SVT.

The numbers are based on information that the research company has gathered by interviewing 1,000 people for a television programme called Skönhetsbubblan (The Beauty Bubble) which airs on Swedish TV on Thursday night.

....I must be living in the past...

I always thought cosmetic/plastic surgery is for those with hideous face/body disfigurements.

There seems to be an insidious 'body fascism' at work these days - leading to people feeling inferior with how they look

Well the standard are very high in Sweden with so many beautiful women around. I can perfectly imagine that immigrants who's family genes aren't blessed in a similar way would revert to such treatments in order to compete.
12:08 April 19, 2012 by karex
This is nothing new. Much more common in the US I must admit than it has been here, especially in places like California where teenagers go through procedures in the hopes of becoming ravishing and then embarking on careers as top models or movie stars...
12:47 April 19, 2012 by Spuds MacKenzie
Most "real" Swedish girls are absolutely perfect the way they are. It must be refugees who feel the need for such enhancements.
13:07 April 19, 2012 by superr
oh really ??? i'm an Pure ethiopian and i've always been proud to see people dying to have my skin color ... and i'm beautiful the way i am ,,,,,, just perfect !!

and for u to know there are so many beauties around the world who doesn't even let u see the swedish girls ... if u'd open ur racist eyes.

And for you to know, people have a surgery not because they're not perfect the way they are it's because the satisfaction level and the lack of confidence they have on themselves. and it doesn't need to be swedish , german , american , eritrean , kenyan , thai .... to have a plastic surgery.

anyone can do that . it's just a personality . not a race !!!

put that racist attitude away towards all the things .
13:08 April 19, 2012 by StockholmSam
@Spuds MacKenzie

Besides the fact that you are a trolling racist pig, the fact is that such procedures are costly and the majority of people who go through such operations have good disposable incomes. Still sound like your refugee profile?
13:25 April 19, 2012 by Spuds MacKenzie
@StockholmSam So because I only find TRUE (aka: ethnic) Swedes attractive that makes me a racist, eh? Now I get it. SMH
13:27 April 19, 2012 by Cephalectomy
swedish girls arent beautiful and have too much confidence thinking they are beautiful, good sign theyre operating. Danish girls are way hotter, and i agree with the ethiopian commentor, ethiopians are very beautiful.
13:32 April 19, 2012 by Pakistani_Student
I think if we get the facts on women who go for plastic surgery, it would be mostly ethnically swedish women because as StockholmSam pointed out that it is an expensive procedure and there are other reasons of cultural dislike for such surgeries among immigrants and etc. So, now i wonder what leads to these swedish women go for surgeries to change their look, why are they subjected to inferiority complex if they look at big less beautiful as compared to others, is beauty everything for swedish women, has spiritually they are so weak that everything on the surface has become everything in totality for them ...
13:44 April 19, 2012 by towns
@ Cephalectomy (self-explanatory name if ever there was one)

"Swedish aren't beautiful?!" What planet do you live on? I'm going to use the favorite word of The Local commentators and call you a racist!

For most people, physical beauty is related to health and symmetry. The most beautiful woman I've seen in Sweden was from Burundi.

Otherwise, botox potency is tested on mice. If the right number die, the batch is ready to go. Survivor mice are gassed. Modern version of double-double-toil-and-trouble, eye-of-newt, cauldron-style beauty enhancement. :(

I was fortunate to have grandmothers with hearts of gold, so I generally see age as strength of character and acquired wisdom. I've worked hard for my wrinkles, and I'm keeping them dammit.
14:01 April 19, 2012 by towns
@ libertarianism

People experience beauty in different ways, it is a subjective experience, there are no written rules that says "a beautiful woman is symmetrical" or any other nonsense like that. You said the most beautiful woman you've seen in Sweden was from Burundi, for me it was a woman of Estonian origin. See what I mean?
14:01 April 19, 2012 by Spuds MacKenzie
Most of the commenters here are nuts! I think they are jealous to be surrounded by the world's most beautiful women: the ethnic Swede. So they have to resort to insults about real Swedes just to make themselves feel less insecure.

Gimme a break: Swedish girls are HOT!!
14:13 April 19, 2012 by towns
@ Spuds MacKenzie

Yes, I noticed that too.
14:25 April 19, 2012 by Slash
Personally I always feel that the ethnic (100%) swedish girls are very beautiful....but again it is true that most of them are so obsessed with make up and fake things..
14:47 April 19, 2012 by rami_20
@Spuds Mackenzie

Can you describe what a true ethnic Swede looks like? Haircolor, eyecolor etc..
15:01 April 19, 2012 by libertarianism
#12, Beauty is multifaceted, but symmetry is not nonsense.

Humans interpret symmetry as physical beauty, so that a face or body, no matter how narrow/wide the eyes, nose, lips, hips, etc. is interpreted as beautiful when such features are proportional to one another. That's why Jens Lapidus - see upper right advert - looks infinitely better than Mr. Bean. Symmetry signals health. Glowing skin, white teeth, youth, energy, pheromones, etc signal health. And health = reproductive capacity.

I seriously doubt any woman in the world would choose Mr. Bean over Lapidus if the two were presented in photos alone. Mr. Bean, however, might prove the better companion. (I don't know.)

Of course, cultural norms get lopped on top of everything else. But scientists have noted that people equate symmetry and health with beauty. :)

@ libertarianism

Well thank you for going more in-depth/clarifying what you meant :)
15:19 April 19, 2012 by Rishonim
LOL.. Indeed they are beautiful but it is really for a short while. Most of them in their 20, 30s start turning into an ugly Olga's while most immigrant women preserve their beauties well into their 50s. I was always wondering where are the beautiful women over 40 in Sweden and the answer is that they transform into something ugly :-)
15:26 April 19, 2012 by chemo007
boobs with silicon.....beauty with cosmetic.....its good to look pretty but not artificial............
15:41 April 19, 2012 by Spuds MacKenzie
@Rishonim Wow, that is a racist, and ignorant, comment. I see countless incredibly gorgeous ethnic Swedish women in their 40's & 50's.
15:44 April 19, 2012 by Svensksmith
Gonna be pretty scary 20 years from now when all the women look like Michael Jackson.
15:46 April 19, 2012 by Rishonim
@Spuds.. and you don't think this was ignorant and racist?

12:47 April 19, 2012 by Spuds MacKenzie

Most "real" Swedish girls are absolutely perfect the way they are. It must be refugees who feel the need for such enhancements.
16:09 April 19, 2012 by Spuds MacKenzie
@Rishonim No, I don't see anything racist in my comments. I find real 100% Swedish women to be gorgeous & flawless. What's wrong with saying that?
16:38 April 19, 2012 by libertarianism
Re 16, If ethnic Swede can't be defined, then neither should Afro-Swede.
16:44 April 19, 2012 by Rishonim
Spuds,

I find 100% Swedish women to be gorgeous until 28... After that point they brittle into something incredible ugly.... Nothing racist with that...
19:33 April 19, 2012 by Svensksmith

Everyone in Stockholm seems to have had something done, just look at the "weekends finest" and you'll see at least "the fish lips effect".

I´m quite sure, that if a mustache on female face was ever deemed sexy bt the MTV, they would get implants. The young having a tough time with money, they´d search for road kill ferrets and glue them on their face.
